SXM Accommodation

Sat Mar 16, 2013 1:22 am

Hi guys, I am planning my trip to SXM for Aug to celebrate my 30th and tick off something on my bucket list and I am after peoples opinions on the accommodation around SXM, how close it is to the airport and all that sort of stuff an areosexual like myself would consider.

For those wondering my routing for the flight I am doing
BNE-LAX-DFW-MIA-SXM-MIA-DFW-BNE flying OneWorld airlines.

Looks like I will get my first flight on a 747 and 757.

Cheers for your help guys!

Hello Zkokq, I'd love to do the itinerary you are doing! In Philipsburg you should stay at Hotel Beach Plaza, it's located 6KM from the city but it's amazing!

Hi Joacocifuentes,

cheers for the recommendation.

Anyone have an opinion of Sonesta Maho Beach?

I stayed in a two-bedroom suite with full kitchen at the Port de Plaisance, across the lagoon from the airport. It's a timeshare which also rents out rooms and suites like a hotel, and it was very nice. A lot of the planes take off right over the hotel, and you can sit by the pool nearest the gym with a drink while they take off overhead (you can see the runway across the lagoon from the hotel).

Sonesta Maho Beach

I've only ever popped by the Sonesta to pick up a friend but the place seems nice. If the main thrust of your trip is SXM itself you can't really beat it for a view of the approach to SXM and for the very short walk that it is to Maho beach itself.

When you're in Saint Maarten make sure you drive around the island. Terre Basses is beautiful. Also you get some interesting takeoff views from the hill overlooking the Simpson bay side of SXM.

Enjoy!

Awesome. I will be shooting with Canon's 400L f/2.8 so that might be a great idea

Hi,

When I went, I stayed at a lovely string of small villas called "Beachside Villas". I'd recommend them if you're going with a group. They're not huge but they're very nice to stay and relax in, decently equipped. The owner is very helpful, and the location is good - right next to the runway, in Simpson Bay. (here's the location tagged with a pointer on google maps - http://goo.gl/maps/xvO4l) It's about a 5 minute walk or so to the beach. Plus, it's got a decent spotting location on site - there's a little raised platform that allowed you to shoot over the fence. I used this location in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_UKmA1nVXE - the one at 30 seconds as well as the taxi out and a few shots on the T/O roll.

It has space to park cars too, if you want to rent a car to drive around the island (which is certainly advised, the island is stunning). It's also right on the beach which is nice, and there's a good place to eat just a 5 minute walk down the beach.
