What Are Some Good TV Shows To Watch?

Tue Mar 19, 2013 10:24 am

What are some good TV shows?

I am running out of good episodes of TV to watch and I just haven't discovered any good shows. I generally prefer American TV.

What are some of your favorites?

All of the following are fantastic:
Breaking Bad, Burn Notice (possibly the deepest, best executed tv series ever), Castle (watched a few episodes of that this evening), Justified, Leverage, The Good Wife, Warehouse 13, White Collar.

Less so (but still worth mentioning) are Community and Covert Affairs.

That's a stretch.

I've tried it. Really, I have. Forced myself to watch the first 6 episodes, and then asked other people what their favorite episode is. I just can't do it. The humor is crass and childish, the animation is annoying at best, and there's just nothing intelligent about it. I love offensive humor (see: Family Guy) but something about Archer I just find ridiculous and stupid.

CBS is irking me in how they've replaced it with a show called "Golden Boy" that was supposed to air on Fridays. New episodes start airing again on April 5 and they cut the season to 21 episodes instead of the 22 episode order that CBS did after it did well early on. It's a good show and there's a lot of interesting stuff in Ralph Lamb's life that they could mine for many seasons, but I'm beginning to think that it may not get renewed for a second season by CBS (I think the show if not picked up CBS could potentially be picked up by a network like TNT , USA or even FX.).

It's one of the funniest, smartest comedies on TV right now.

This season has had some of the best moments, especially Pam and Cheryl (Krieger has had some odd ones as well.). The two-part season finale this season has the potential to be epic since the episode will be a crossover of sorts with Sealab 2021 (One of the first series that Archer creator Adam Reed created back when he was involved with Adult Swim.) with Captain Murphy being voiced by Jon Hamm. It's also time for a Babou spotting as he's yet to turn up this season.......

I finally got around to starting to watch it prior to Season 2 as they were running Season 1 one weekend but lost interest after the fifth episode. I think I was more interested in spotting all of the locations since the show is filmed in and around the Atlanta area.

Looking at everyone's suggestions, no love for Sons Of Anarchy? I've been hooked since the very first episode and it's one of the best series on TV in my opinion. It doesn't get much love from the Emmys or Golden Globes, but so what.....

I've got all five seasons on Blu-Ray, so the waiting hasn't been too hard there.

I've rarely watched it when it aired, as for most of the season it was coming on at the same time as Sons Of Anarchy and I would watch it the next day or so on demand. I've kept doing it even after SOA was done for the season, as I just got into the habit catching it the next days or so on demand.

The ratings have dropped for the show, which is why they're moving the show to Friday nights (which is almost a death sentence) and cut back the number of episodes. The problem with the major networks like CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox is that they expect hits and really don't want to take the time for a show to get traction. Cable networks like TNT, USA, FX, AMC, etc. have a bit more patience and allow most shows a chance to develop (Although they do cancel series after a single season if the ratings were never too good.). NBC back in 2009 canceled Southland about two weeks prior to the premiere of Season 2 (which they had initially delayed a month in order to "better promote it") and TNT picked the series up and is now in its' fifth season. If CBS were to cancel Vegas, TNT might be a perfect fit for them and not just because TNT airs the old NBC series "Las Vegas" (After NBC canceled that show, I pretty much quit watching that network.).

Doesn't surprise me, the budget for that show is quite pricey. The basic networks aren't willing to go big on shows that can't make #1 on prime-time. Person of Interest will probably go the same way soon. I'm surprised it's made it this far already.

Yeah they're trying to control it too much. Which is a shame. You can tell the kids look like they aren't too sure what to say. I still think it's hilarious though. IRT has always seemed a little scripted to me. The only big reality show that doesn't seem too scripted anymore is Deadliest Catch.

ABC, NBC and now apparently CBS have not been successful trying to take a page from Mad Men and do a show set in the 1960s. The sort of ratings Mad Men gets on AMC are great ratings for them but awful ratings on the broadcast networks. The cable networks aren't as ratings driven as the broadcast networks, but shows like Mad Men, Walking Dead, Breaking Bad garner some decent ad money for cable. The ad money even becomes an issue in regards to keeping a show on that network, especially if the show is very popular. Season 5 of Mad Men was delayed partially because of AMC being locked in contract negotiations with Matt Weiner over money. AMC wanted to further cut cast members as well as cut 2-3 minutes from the show in order to air more commercials. They got the run time cut, but they didn't get everything they wanted.

Some of these networks will throw money away on pilots. NBC spent something like $13 million on the pilot episode of a Munsters reboot, Mockingbird Lane and was part of the reason why they didn't pick it up (That and it didn't get too good of ratings when they aired it as a special at Halloween.).

One of the reasons why NBC canceled Las Vegas several years back was due to how expensive the show was to make and they had already pared the cast down for what was the final season.

Things have changed in the last twenty years. Nothing on PBS to match these ground breaking shows:

The Sopranos
The Wire
Mad Men
Breaking Bad
Justified
Battlestar Galactica.
Lost
Louie
Deadwood

HBO started the TV revolution in the US with the Sopranos. The quality of writing on these shows breaks new ground and puts a lot of literature to shame.

For sheer enjoyment, I would also recommend:

The Killing (based on a Danish show).
The Walking Dead
The Americans
Rubicon (cancelled)
Homeland
Caprica (cancelled).

I do think there are great shows coming out of the UK and I love many of them. So give US TV a chance!

Also add:
Grey's Anatomy

and I'm pinning hopes on the brand new Bates Motel, but we will see on that one.

If it wasn't for the Sopranos, you likely wouldn't have Mad Men, as Matthew Weiner's spec script for Mad Men (written in 1999) is what got him hired as a writer on the Sopranos and later was a producer of the show.

FX was probably the non-premium cable channel to start the revolution. Shows like The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me are what led to series like Sons Of Anarchy, Justified, The Americans, etc. being picked up by the channel. FX used to be nothing but reruns of old Fox TV shows and that's far from the case now. Fox is likely to split FX this fall into two channels, with FX being their channel for dramas and FXX/FX2 being for comedies (Fox is turning Speed into Fox Sports 1 and Fox Soccer Channel is likely to be turned into a second FX channel.) similar to Time Warner's TNT and TBS channels.

You didn't start at the begining did you? You have to start BB at the 1st episode, you'll adjust your Hal into Walter very nicely. And for a laugh, there are lots of fan fic postings that BB is the prequel to Malcolm

Here are some current and past show reruns worth watching in no particular order:
  • Leave It To Beaver: The fantassy life 1950's style.
  • The Twilight Zone (original Rod Serling series)
  • Two Broke Girls (They're hot especially the leggy skinny blonde)
  • The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson
  • Excused (guilty pleasure)
  • Jerry Springer (family reunion time)
  • Perry Mason
  • Underdog
  • Batman (1960's kitsch over the top campiness)
  • Cold Case
  • CSI Miami
  • Criminal MInds (newer episodes with Joe Montagnia)
  • Route 66 (episodes with George Maharris)
  • I Love Lucy
  • Three Stooges (shorts from 1940's with Curly are the best, the ones with Shemp are second best)
  • Brady Bunch (guilty pleasure/later episodes, Marcia looks hot in those mini skirts and shows some trim)
  • Alfred Hitchcok Presents
  • The Amazing Race
  • Various HGTV shows
  • Lifetime premier movies that have plenty of hot women in some mode of crisis.

American Pickers is great.
Big rig bounty hunters
Undercover boss is good.
Hell's Kitchen
Master Chef

THE BEST SHOW IMO is "The Vikings" . Hands down! I would pick it over the walking dead any day.

I don't watch much TV these days, but these are the shows (in order of favourites) I watch online whenever there is a new episode:

Suits
Archer
Bar Rescue
Kitchen Nightmares
American Dad

...and I can't believe nobody has mentioned this one:

Mayday/Air Crash Investigation

Yes. You might not like the show for other reasons, but the fact is that there is a lot of subtle humour among the more brash stuff. There are a lot of references that the average person probably wouldn't get.

I find it similar to Family Guy (although I don't really find Family Guy that funny). There's a lot of crude, in-your-face humour, but they mix in some cultural references and jokes that goes over the head of many people. Seth McFarlane is actually a really smart guy.

...is one of the most offensive TV shows out there today, bar none. Maybe because the show hits close to home, but I don't really care for the fact that they predicate their "humour" on making fun of stereotypes. It's easy because "nerds"/smart people don't have anyone to stand up for them. Could you imagine if they made fun of black people? Or LGBT people? The outrage would be unprecedented.

Chuck Lorre is literally human trash. I can't stand any of that schlock he tries to pass for entertainment.

I'd say this season wasn't quite as good as the third season, but the "Live and Let Dine" episode this season, I would say, is pretty much the best episode of Archer yet. Anthony Bourdain was absolutely brilliant!

I'm looking forward to the season finale too...if it's as good as the Season 3 finale was, it should be brilliant. Who's willing to bet Ray gets paralyzed again?

Thank you! Sure, Archer's humour is really shallow on the surface, but if you can get the historical and pop culture references, you'd be surprised just how deep the jokes really are. Pretty much every joke and plotline in Archer during the last three seasons has made reference to something.

As for Family Guy, it used to be funny, but they're just recycling the same old gags over and over now. Non-sequitur is funny the first couple times, but after the fiftieth? not so much. Plus, while Archer puts the joke in front of you and expects you to figure it out yourself, Family Guy beats you over the head with it.
Time...to un-pimp...ze auto!

I recommend the Bible on History Channel. I know it sounds boring but I have heard very good reviews, even from atheist friends

I never could get into it, as I can't see Bryan Cranston as anything other than Hal on "Malcolm In The Middle".

You didn't start at the begining did you? You have to start BB at the 1st episode, you'll adjust your Hal into Walter very nicely.

Please listen to him, srbmod! Don't miss on eof TV's greatest shows!

FX was probably the non-premium cable channel to start the revolution. Shows like The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me are what led to series like Sons Of Anarchy, Justified, The Americans, etc. being picked up by the channel.

Yes, you're right, I didn't think of that. At the same time, kudos to AMC too for raising the bar.

Could you imagine if they made fun of black people? Or LGBT people? The outrage would be unprecedented.

I'm one of the nerdiest people you'll ever meet. I love the show. They make fun of promiscuous girls (Penny), people with social disorders (Sheldon/Amy), homosexuals (Raj's comments/mannerisms), Indian people (Raj), Jews (Howard), etc. Family Guy should also offend you. The Simpsons should also offend you. As for the LGBT community, what about Will & Grace? What about The New Normal? What about Modern Family? You may not like the humor, but I really don't think Big Bang Theory is any more or less offensive than other television. Just because the other shows don't make fun of Ners, you're offended by this one and not them? Be proud of who you are. A smart, motivated, hard-working dude who might know more than is good for him. I'm exactly that, and I carry it proudly.

...is one of the most offensive TV shows out there today, bar none.

Well if you think about it, Archer makes fun of nerds too (Cyril), as well as black people (Lana), LGBT (Ray), and even has references to Nazis (Krieger)...but nobody I've never heard any outrage from anyone.

I personally find The Big Bang Theory to be pretty hilarious. It has a lot of smart humour which I like. Jim Parsons is also one of my favourite characters on TV (apart from Donna of course   ).

Agreed. My favourite episode is "The Limited" from season 3. Especially the last scene where Archer is arguing with Babou in the back of the cop car...I think I laughed myself to tears!

The writers are pretty clever, as they will even reference shows that the actors have been on as well as some of the prior shows Adam Reed and Matt Thompson were involved with. In some ways, it's James Bond and Get Smart mixed with Arrested Development.

Babou rules and it's time for him to show up this season (Reggie the Lemur showed up earlier in the season.).
