Ex-French Pres Sarkozy Charged With Abuse, Fraud

Fri Mar 22, 2013 2:58 pm

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has been charged with "abuse of someone in an impaired state" over richest woman's donations.

It's a complicated case that has been in the news for years and was at first "investigated" by a prosecutor, a man directly under Sarkozy's thumb and a friend of his to boot. Now the most obvious charge of illegal financing of a political party/campaign has reached the statute of limitations so only the most serious charge of taking advantage of an old and ill woman remains (I just heard there are two other charges, grave breech of trust and grave fraud).

This happens just as his UMP party is seeing lots of infighting over who will be candidate in the 2017 presidential elections, while many of his friends were calling for his return to take a revenge against president François Hollande in 2017.

His predecessor Chirac was charged and found guilty of embezzlement.... maybe it's a job requirement?

Yes Chirac had used all sorts of illegal money to campaign in 1995. Interestingly enough Sarkozy, at the time supporting another right-wing candidate who was poised to win, prime minister Edouard Balladur, is also a person of interest in the investigation into Balladur's campaign, involving similar dirty money, but from African leaders, and an arms deal with Pakistan. Chirac's victory meant that some people didn't get the under the table money they were supposed to get and led to a bombing that killed several French engineers in Karachi, it is alleged. There is also an investigation into polling contracts of the Elysée during Sarkozy's presidency, and a possible investigation into Libyan money being used in the 2007 campaign.

I was more interested in the investigation of Christine Lagarde, personally. For whatever reason I always quite liked her. I wonder if the outcome of any investigation will affect her job at the IMF.

I'd love to know more about this.
