Do You Use Your Cute Accent To...?

Thu Mar 28, 2013 6:44 am

Hello there!

I was in a restaurant eaves-dropping on a conversation I had heard between a staff member and three tourists (the conversation took place near my table) :

Tourist: "Can you suggest a great bar to go to tonight?"
Employee: "Yes! I recommend... ."
Tourist: "Are there lots of hot girls, there?"
Employee: "Many!"
Tourist: "When women hear our cute French Accents, they do anything we want (not exactly those words, but you get the idea)."
Employee: Smiles and agrees.

So, are you aware of how cute your accent is to us US(Americans) and if you do know it is, do you use it to charm your way into getting whatever you want? This is not an attack by any means, but I have thought about this from time-to-time.

Cheers!

I have to admit to once hamming up my foreignness in the United States in an attempt to score myself relations with a fine local male specimen.

All I can say is... it worked.

I have really play up my southern accent when I travel in Quebec. The first time I was in Montreal, back in 1998, I was talking to a bar tender and saying how friendly people in town were and how I was led to believe that the people were rude to Americans there. He said that they didn't like New Yorkers and that I obviously wasn't from NYC. I guess the big belt buckle and cowboy boots gave it away. Ever since I have really hill billied it up in Quebec and everyone has been friendly and I always have a great time.

I have played up up "good ole boy" thing a lot when I have traveled in Germany and it always gets results there too. When I travel in the UK I don't need to act like a "good ole boy" because I visit the rural areas and go to tractor and engine shows, so I fit right in.

Man, if it was true I'd know it. I lived 7 years in Ireland, but never could get rid of my French accent (though it's not as extreme as some French people who are completely not comprehensible). So I don't have the choice to speak with a French accent. But I've never used with an idea in mind. I'm just trying to talk!

Spanish, Greek, Turkish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Scottish accents do it for me if spoken by females (though somehow I tend to end up with East Asian women).
Maybe it is subconcious for a guy that he casts his net wide to enhance the gene pool and is more attracted by potential partners from far away, who´se genetic structure will be more likely different from his own.

I was in a bar with a group of friends and about 7 shots later, we were introduced to a few Australian Tourists visiting Los Angeles. After a few exchanges of the "how's your trip, when did you arrive, what do you think of LA so far," etc... I finally said, "I know what you're trying to do. You're using your cute Aussie accent to have your way with me! I caught you!" (all laughing and drinking while saying this) And he says, "so what are you doing later?" I reply, "You." lol!!!!!!!!!

So you see, it works for those of you that take advantage! Have fun!!! Woof!

I don't, but the affect was really noticeable when I was in the US earlier this month. I've never had some many girls flirting with me in such a short period of time - the British accent rocks!

I'm had a lot of positive comments on my Home Counties (S.E.England) accent over the years. Lots of non-native English speakers thank me for having such a clear accent   When I speak loud enough, I get some attention, especially in the States!

Well in my case, German accents are the ones that win me over. My hubby still had his German accent when I met him and it hooked me...7 years later he still got me! Other northern European accents do it for me as well (Danish, Dutch, Swedish) as well as some from South America (specifically Argentina and Chile).

Still, nice to go somewhere where you just have to talk and you're halfway in bed with them.

I do not look like the typical idea other people (not only Americans) think Mexicans look like (for some reason I do not understand, I usually get : Are you from Brazil?) So, more then attracting people, they are more curious about where I´m from when I speak English. Does it work to get me some? I´m not sure, but at least it gets conversations started.

Sort of the same thing happens when I speak French. But the French do love my accent.

When I speak Portuguese it definitely is not that interesting to native speakers

It´s when I speak Italian that more specimens get interested, and once or twice I´ve gotten drinks from people wanting me to "speak to them"

Sadly, my accent (in English, anyway) is generic American. It doesn't even have a regional twist to it, for the most part. That said, I am from the Midwest, so I can turn on my Michigan accent when I want it, but it sounds more provincial and hickish than alluring. It's good for getting laughs, but not good for getting play.

Never found that my accent in English helped me get any. I don't have a strong New Zealand accent. TBH I have had more luck trying the local language even if I don't know how to. The attempted language contact requires interaction and then I am able to start a conversation. Learning a language is easier when sex is the final goal...:-P

Regularly, but more in business than in bars as I am a good married boy - though the waitresses love me too... I have several middle aged cougar / milf customers and I just need to call them up and the business keeps on coming in! I have a fairly rough London accent (think Del Boy) but I can speak perfect James Bond-ese and it works without fail.

This too with dark hair, I like it in women (I loved Yasmine Bleath in Baywatch way more than Pammie...) so I guess it works both ways!

Mind you, it works both ways too - I dont like the harsh and loud western or southern accents, but a soft Canadian accent from a Vancouver girl or the French Montreal girl is just - wow...

Having been born and raised in Alabama and having traveled a bit around the rest of the US, I can say with some certainty that my accent isn't considered "cute" at all. That being said, speaking with a thick Southern accent does have it's perks: I'm almost never asked to take part in boring political discussions, and on the occasions that I do make an intelligent comment the looks of shock and amazement on the faces of the people to whom I spoke are quite humorous to see.

I don't think so. Nothing wrong with a Kiwi accent to my ears.

Here's a quick & easy test for which accents are attractive and which ones aren't: Just imagine the person with the accent saying "Oh yeah, baby" in a very sexy way- If that thought makes you chuckle, smirk, or wince in the least, then you might as well give it up.

Kiwi accents isnt very strong in my opinion. Not like Aussie accents. More generic English. The typical stereotyped maori accent is more noticeable but still not one that makes me take much note.

Although it doesn't come on naturally, I can turn on a pretty good French accent and it has gotten me out of trouble more than once and a few free drinks on occasion, but that's about it. If I let it go beyond that, I would have to answer to the better half!

I have a co-worker who speaks with a British accent. Just about every time I go into the kitchen for something, she and another co-worker are having a whole conversation speaking with that accent. I think they just do it for fun tho. Sometimes I'll chime right in and say something with an accent.

And no, no way in hell am I trying to pick anyone up. These girls are a good 8 years or so younger than I am, and more importantly I'm already married. My wife is 100% Russian and sometimes slips into speaking Yiddish.

absolutely.

when going out in New York City I've hammed it up often with a nice southern U.S. drawl. it works quite well at scoring drinks and sometimes....people.

then during Fleet Week I dress up in a Canadian Coast Guard uniform and do a great northern Minnesota/southwest Ontario mix and tell everyone I'm from Thunder Bay. let's face it - in the gay bars the attention span is null and void ... they hear the accent and they see a guy in uniform and that's all they need. they don't concern themselves with truth or geography. i usually drink for free for about 5-6 days during this time.

Yep, Southern English is almost it's own language, in idiom if not in vocabulary. Add in the distinctive accent and when we Southerners venture into other parts of the country we get a lot of blank stares followed by numerous questions about where exactly we're from, what brings us to ____ city, etc. which is great for starting conversations but is more than a little inconvenient when all one wants is directions to the nearest restroom.

Okay, I've got to ask this: Has no-one ever found it incongruous that someone with handsome but strongly Midwestern features would speak with a Southern accent? Or is that something only a Southerner would find remarkable?
