Should I Change My Old XP Into Something Else?

Tue Apr 09, 2013 5:31 pm

Well, XP will no longer be it, in a few months, according to this report http://www.pcworld.com/article/20336...he-end-is-near-for-windows-xp.html .

Now the question is : should I reformat my old notebook with a newer OS version? Is it worth the change?

Cheers.

Personally, I wouldn't bother upgrading your system. Afterall a copy of Windows 7 or 8 will run you $150+.

If you've had your system for a while, perhaps you should just think of buying a new one? Putting in the $150, helps part of the cost and you'll still have a year to save up for it!

got it. Alreadty have 3. 1 XP, 1 Vista (upgraded to W7) and a W7. Plus an Ipad. I thought I'd upgrade the XP, since it will no longer get updates and such, next year.
Cheers

If the XP computer is working well for you then I see no reasons to change. It's the old phrase "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

Just keep good back ups of your data, pics, docs, etc.

I have an old G5 iMac that is still working well. It's time to upgrade, however, as the G5 is having trouble with the larger sized of .jpeg files from the newer cameras. I don't believe in putting more money into it so the new iMac is on the "Buy List", probably next month.

XP was the best Windows ever, and still is. I wish I could get my hands on a new dualcore netbook with 2gb RAM, running XP. It would be pretty much all I need. Of course such things exist, but only extremely used ones.

The XP code is pretty mature; the updates decrease in importance the later in the life cycle of an OS they are. I'd just leave it as it is (providing you take the same precautions as usual- FW/AV etc).

Unless you need a specific functionality of W7, I don't see why you would need to upgrade.

Depending on the specs of your notebook, that upgrade might not even be an upgrade at all. W7 is a lot heavier on RAM and cpu resources.

I'm perfectly happy with XP on my older machines and plan on keep using it for as many years as possible.

Where are you getting Windows 7?

Problem being that OEM licenses are only valid when bought in conjunction with a new PC (or enough pieces of hardware)

B&H is selling Win7 Home Premium upgrades for $90:

Before upgrading the XP box, I'd run Microsoft's upgrade advisor to make sure the rest of your system is good enough to run Win7. I have an old XP box that will need a new video card to run Win7 acceptably.

In Canada.. Future Shop (Best Buy) has it for $129 plus tax which works out to $149.50.

But I will echo statements here that XP is the best.. At work we changed over from XP to some new Windows 8 machines.. Dear Lord.. what fun that was.

No, it just means that you won't be able to carry the license over to another computer. Here they are selling 8 for 30€ to try and get people on board. As a computer tech I see that 8 is causing a lot of backlash, especially in a corporate environment, too gimmicky and impractical.

7 is fine however, I don't know if it's possible to buy 8 and install 7 instead, it was possible previously, notably with the dreaded Vista. I'm getting my licenses for free at the moment.

I still have a few computers running XP, but only the ones I can't upgrade memory wise, the others have at least 12GB of RAM and for that XP isn't suitable.

Sorry to disagree, but OEM licences are meant to be sold only together with a computer (and yes, they are not transferrable from the original computer they were bought alongside with). Technically they should not be even available through retail, but ... (we all know that they are ... but from a legalistic standpoint they are essentially invalid).

I've tried the 8 Beta and the final product and I do not plan to use it in the near future. For bonus stupidity MS has forced the same UI onto 2012 Server ... Not too fond of that either. ^^
