   lol nice. Technically however it is not oil, but diluted bitumen, which theoretically means Exxon doesn't have to pay into the cleanup fund.

Solyndra and Beacon Power are much better companies because they don't make any mess and wont ever leave a carbon footprint....

I worked for ExxonMobil for awhile. I know what their management is like.

They'll pay for most of the cleanup, pay off the people that make most of the noise and then build a community center or dump a bunch of money into the local United Way and then talk about how much good they are doing for communities. And get a bunch of free positive publicity that way.

The amount of money this company spends in order to get "positive publicity" is obscene.

Type-rated...you left out pay 10 cents on the dollar for compensation after fighting Alaskan fisherman in court for twenty years hoping as many plaintiffs die off as possible. After dong a half-ass-ed cleanup job in Prince William Sound, where you still hit crude oil at about three feet if you dig.

Yeah, I'm from Alaska, I know what Exxon is about.
OBAMA-WORST PRESIDENT EVER....Even SKOORB would be better.

Now the former Mobil people were a nice lot. Quite a number of them chose to not continue with Exxon and found other options.
One guy who quit Exxon to go to work for Mobil and later was about to be merged in with Exxon again said "Nope, did it once, not going to do THAT again!".

That really sucks but so do the companies I listed above. I know this thread was another 'beat up on the oil companies' thread.

If my information correct is, pre-merger Mobil had domestic partner benefits for gay employees. Exxon did not offer that, which is one thing. They did not, alas, adopt Mobil's benefits plan enterprise-wide after the merger. OK, that's one thing.

The other thing is, they actually did away with the existing benefits that legacy Mobil employees had enjoyed. No one was grandfathered in, they just up and did away with it.

If you ask me that's kind of vicious.

When I buy gasoline here in the Twin Cities, my first choice is Sinclair, followed by Marathon, then BP (née Amoco), then Mobil / Exxon. (I hate Exxon but ya know what they're still more moral than Shell (not that that is saying anything at all).)

Actually from what I heard the former Mobil employees got to keep the domestic partners benefits while after the merger these benefits were not extended to the former Exxon employees. But the last I heard of that was in 2004 or so. Mobil always seemed to value it's employees, Exxon always looked at their employees as just a number.

Every year at the annual stockholder's meeting the subject of same sex benefits comes up. Each year it is voted down but the gap is closing with every passing year. Maybe one year.... But nothing is going to change until EM finally rids itself of the "good ole' boy" management.

See.... I find that rather strange that EM would pay for a party. After the Valdez disaster Exxon deleted alcohol from all company function. Retirement parties, years of service luncheons cannot have any alcohol involved in these functions at all.

Makes perfect sense considering America is falling behind in those areas in academia. Do we really need more Art History and Bitter Women's Studies graduates?

Yeah I don't know much about SA, but as I understand it when you buy gasoline from one of those non-oil-company gas stations (SA, Holiday, Kwik Trip, Freedom, Mills Gas Mart....) there's a good chance that the product actually came from Shell.

I do whatever the heck I can to prevent any pennies of mine going to Shell.

Bank of America and Citi FOundations both give more than Exxon. Bank of America gives almost 3x more than Exxon. I dont know where Apple and Starbucks fall on the list but neither of their bankrolls are as high as the other 3 anyway.

In Houston it's an annual contest between Shell and Exxon who is going to give the most to the "United Way". One years I was told back in the 80's Exxon's slogan for their campaign was "Give Until It Hurts". The suggested "donation" was between 8-10%
of your annual income. Exxon normally contributed between $4-5 million each year.

The second year I was at Exxon I was appointed the United Way Drive chairman for our group. This was right after the head of the Girl Scouts in Houston was caught using United Way funding to pay for her penthouse condo and chauffeur driven Rolls Royce. Nobody wanted to contribute after that. I was told to hammer the people until they give and to tell them that management will be getting a list of people's names who didn't contribute. I was told, "just think, you may be saving your own job by doing this".

Wow. If you can be more specific, I'd like to know what that entails, the hammering & all. Sounds like a legal grey area to say the least, but I guess companies can get away with that more back then perhaps...

Based on everything I've read, pretty sure I wouldn't volunteer to work for E/M there in any case.

I used to be an employee of a company for which my principal job was maintaining and servicing technical (computer-related) equipment at the Exxon building in downtown Houston. Folks seemed pretty happy with their jobs, and I know they were paid well with good benefits.

The United Way thing, though, was pretty foul - the degree of pressure put on employees was pretty bad; I was hammered-on by a guy who did not realize that I was not an employee (badge was a permanent one, did not differentiate) when I said I was not pledged-in - he never gave me a chance to finish my sentence by saying, "...because I am not an employee!" Guess I should have said, "Sure, dude, sign me up for 50%."

Later employer (TRW, after an acquisition) tried to persuade me into the United Way campaign - I simply stated, "I do my charitable giving through other means, and I am not interested in participating. Thank you." Graciously accepted.

Usually the hammering was all about helping people in need, no matter what your own personal situation was. There were people there who just could not afford it. But the company only wanted the publicity for being the largest contributor. Sure the United Way is a pretty good charity and does do good for people but I don't like being threatened by the managers. It was also rumored that if you didn't give, this was a subject that would come up at performance review time.

I worked in the division that was located across the street from Memorial City mall. I heard things were much better at the Exxon building downtown, but it still was Exxon with it's military style hierarchy. After staying there a few years I had finally had it with them. The company seems to like to know everything about you, including your personal life. It creeps into your life. And I don't know how some of those managers could sleep at night considering how they treated people during the day.

The thing that made me quit was that our division manager wanted me to provide free flight instruction for the Exxon Club flying club. It was to be done every Saturday. I thought this would be fun, but for free? At an airport on the other side of town where I live? So I said no thanks, I value my weekends. Maybe monthly but not every week. The response was "You'll do it or I'll have your job!". I just said "Oh no you won't" and I quit. I turned in a two weeks notice but was told to just leave now.

Sinister company with sinister management. And remember, global warming is only something the media came up with.

I don't really like the idea of company enforced charities. They claim that you can "direct" your money to any of the United Way charities under the United Way member charities. I did this one year and soon received a letter stating that my $800.00 was too small to be "directed" and they'll figure out where it will go.

And the United Way claimed that only .07 of every dollar donated goes to the fund for management. Yeah, right when you have the head of the Houston United Way office living in a penthouse condo and being driven around town in a Rolls with a Chauffeur paid for with United Way funds. BTW, that woman was forced out of the United Way Houston because of the scandal and a year later she was hired as the director of the New York City United Way.

Of course that was not Exxon's problem but what Exxon wanted was the publicity for being a "good Houston Corporate Citizen.
They figure it's good publicity that you can' buy.
