The Masters Tournament 2013

Thu Apr 11, 2013 4:44 am

Well everyone my favorite weekend of the year is upon us. The Masters tournament at Augusta National. It's shaping up to be another great weekend of golf. Tiger is looking strong and may be a contender this year. Rory isn't looking too bad either. My personal pick to win is Graeme McDowell. I think he's finally got the knowledge built up required to play the course. Any other golf nuts on here? Who do you have to win it all?

I'm not pulling for any one individual in particular - just looking forward to the heavy-hitters play, as usual. Tiger, Phil, Rory (looking like he's on an upswing after last weekend's performance), Stricker (a more distant contender, but one of my favorites), Keegan, Bubba...this should be a good show.

In [somewhat unrelated] other news, I wonder if Bubba will show up in this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5u_2bGPdUY  Wink

I just want a good tournament. That being said, if I were in Vegas, I would stretch my odds and put $100 on the 40/1 Jason Dufner.

For you and me, a hobby. For Tiger, Rory, et al, both a sport and a business.

I'm kind of hoping for a Tiger - McIlroy playoff. Mano a mano, single combat.

So begins my favorite four days in professional sports.

I cannot wait to sit down and watch this year's contest.

I'm hoping and praying for a Tiger-Phil finish, complete with risky, jaw-dropping recovery shots from off the fairway.

Sadly, I didn't check the calendar when I scheduled my flight for 6:30pm on Sunday night. I'm going to regret that.

Judging by his play today you might end up "Dufnering". Though there is still a lot of golf to go!

The play has been pretty good today. I've been glued to the tv since it started. Let's hope for an exciting finish!

Sorry i don't have the link but SI has a great story on how Augusta has totally screwed up the pimento and cheese sandwiches that are consumed during the event. I spent six months of Ft. Gorden and never heard of them but apparently they a golfs equivalent to the strawberries and cream at Wimbledon.

After having watched the press conference with Fred Ridley, I believe the right call was made (even though some of the journalists there were shamelessly trying to bait him into saying otherwise). A DQ is only warranted if there is intent to subvert a rule, which the Competition Committee agreed wasn't the case here. I feel a two stroke penalty is fair given that it was a mistake that probably wouldn't have given him an advantage either way.

You walk and play 18 holes, and I promise you you will be tired and sore and looking forward to some rest. Sure, it's not soccer or tennis, but it's not darts either.

Now playing golf using a golf cart (which seems like a uniquely American way of playing) is perhaps more of an activity than a sport.

Seems like you could argue in favour of both, but in the end it looks like it won't have much of an effect anyway, given that he's been hovering around par for a good while now.

I think it was silly and a little excessive. I'm not on the rules committee so obviously this is only my opinion, but if he did something wrong it should have been called right away. Even the announcers didn't have a clue about the rules. Though I suppose one could argue Tiger should have called for a ruling.

Been a pretty good tournament so far if you ask me. Jason Day just took the sole lead. Tiger is playing alright but that rules violation put him behind the 8 ball. He's 5 back of the lead going onto the 18th. I certainly wouldn't put him out just yet, but the leaders are going to have to have a tough round tomorrow if Tiger has a shot. This has certainly been an eventful tournament. Still can't believe Dustin Johnson blew it again. I turned on the feed at 1 Central Yesterday, saw he was leading. Only to get back an hour later to see he was nowhere near the top.

It wasn't noticed right away. They only looked at it because a TV viewer who had the Competition Committees number called and informed them about it. They couldn't find any conclusive evidence before he finished his round, they only could prove later that night that he improperly dropped his ball.

This is why I feel the two stroke penalty is appropriate. He should have known the rule. But the reason he wasn't DQ'ed, according to Fred Ridley, is that Tiger sounded like he legitimately didn't know he was breaking Rule 26-1 at the time.

My money is on either the two players in the last group, Brandt Snedeker and Angel Cabrera, the two faster players on tour. Too bad they'll probably end up waiting on the tee box most of the day. My favorite is El Pato, he likes to show up in the Majors every now and then, winning the US Open (2007) and The Masters (2009). He is currently ranked over 200 in the world. Too bad he gave up smoking. It was fun watching him light up on the course at Oakmont.

Congratulations to 14-year old Tianlang Guan for being the low amateur. Will he beat Phil Mickelson tomorrow?

I went to the practice round on Tuesday. The TV does that place no justice...I was just in awe the whole time. The azaleas were just days from full bloom...weather was fantastic.

Love those pimento cheese sandwiches and the cheap beer!!!

To be fair, I was there with a bunch of Masters regulars and they suggested it so who was I to say no?

Ah, I was unaware of that. That's what I get for typing without knowing the full story.

Well Adam Scott got the green jacket! His putting was really spot on. I couldn't believe some of the ones he was able to pull off today. The playoff was a ton of fun to watch. Angel Cabrera is a class act in how he handled it at the end. Going right up to the guy for a hug. He has a green jacket yes, but I'm sure he wants another. Yet another fantastic Masters in the books. Can't wait for the US Open in June. Although in my opinion the Players Championship should be considered a major. But thats a topic for another thread.

Congratulations to Adam Scott for a great win with a birdie on the 11th hole during the playoff. Congratulations to Angel Cabrera for being a great competitor. It was an exciting sudden death playoff---no Len Mattiace on El Pato's part---almost birding the hole. In the end, it was Scott winning rather than Cabrera losing the playoff.

With Scott winning The Masters, the debate over anchoring the putter will certainly heat up. The last three of four Major winners anchor the putter.

If you've ever been into competitive golf, at the state or provincial level, what you feel at the end of the round is more mental fatigue than physical. And then of course, you replay the round in your head. What separates the superior golfers from the run of the mill, and what Tiger has for quite a while had in his back pocket, is total focus.

Congratulations to Adam Scott, a well deserved victory. Probably back in Oz surfing by now.

That's been my opinion as of late. I can't help but feel that allowing TV viewers to call in and report possible rules violations creates an unfair advantage for the players who don't have every shot televised. Players that are under the spotlight don't violate the rules more often, but they seem to be [ever so slightly] more frequently penalized when their mistakes show up in front of millions as opposed to just their playing partner, caddy and a few nearby fans.
