"Heavens to Betsy..."

Excerpt:

Jonathan Winters, the cherub-faced comedian whose breakneck improvisations and misfit characters inspired the likes of Robin Williams and Jim Carrey, has died. He was 87.

One of Winters' memorable scenes from the 1963 movie, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. The gas station fight scene w/Phil Silvers, Arnold Stang & Marvin Kaplan:

I've always enjoyed his work.

The old Tonight Shows were worth staying up late to watch when he was on.

The world just became a little less funny. Thanks for the laughs, Jonathan.

He was mainly a comedy star from the early 1960's to the early 1980's, but continued doing character voices for animated film until very recently and advertising for decades. An original, he could improvise comedy from any suggestion or a prop, for tv and movies suggestive but not dirty, could come up with memorable characters, yet had to deal with psychological illness including hospitalization 2 times, issues with alcohol, and made it to old age with a still good mind. He inspired many comics including Robin Williams and Jim Carey. Fortuntally, his humor lives on in records and YouTube. He sure made me and many others laugh.

He was always my grandmother's favorite. She made my brother and I watch "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" several times when we came to her house, but by the 2nd viewing it was no longer a suggestion.

One of my favorite scenes:

I went over to my brothers house and watched, "The Russians are comming! The Russians are comming!" with her.

It was a pretty good night even though I didn't get home until midnight.
