Love It, Camaro Test Drive

Wed Apr 24, 2013 4:21 pm

This is so funny, the dealer must have crapped his pants. Almost makes me want to have a test drive of a Camaro.

It was staged, but still funny.

I wonder if Nascar and Formula 1 drivers actually do this just for the hell of it. I know I would.
So we beat on against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

kiwirob...thanks for linking the Jeff Gordon/Camaro bit. It's the first time I've seen the whole clip and it is a scream.

If I where a betting man, I'd wager the ad folks got the idea from the 1980 movie "Used Cars". IIRMC, the test drive ended when the driver rolled the 57 Chevy back into the dealer parking lot and the salesman (played by Jack Warden) died of a heart attack after the test driver said something to the effect that he didn't want to buy the car because it's all f*cked up. It is a great movie and this is a good ad for laughs. regards...jack

From the archives, one of our own made a salesman vomit while test-driving a Mustang GT circa 2007:

"TransEastern! You'll feel like you've never left the ground because we treat you like dirt!" SNL Parady ad circa 1981

PHLBOS: at least our 'Fly only made him puke. In the movie, the perps buried Jack Wardens body under the dealership parking lot at midnight in a 1958 Edsel.

Hey, 'Fly, if you are reading this, one of our respected designers of Edsel genre, Roy Brown, recently passed away a while back.

Back to topic...Kaphias (Rep 1); I'm not entirely sure that the spot was totally staged as you seem to suggest. Even though the whole clip did not make it to into the final ad piece, if the salesman were in on the plot I doubt if he would be using as many words that had to be bleeped out. Just my thoughts...jack

It was staged, Jeff Gordon himself said as much. He even didn't do any of the driving.

Kaphias (Rep 6) sez..."He (Jeff Gordon) didn't do any of the driving."

Interesting. Probably pops a bubble for a lot of Jeffie fans. Hell, I'm a Tony Stewart type guy anyway. Thanks...jack

Haha!
You remembered that! Hard to believe that was 6 years ago. I hope that guy is doing well now. Sadly that dealership closed it's doors a few years ago. It had been serving San Francisco since 1937 and is now an Enterprise rental car.

Sorry to hear about that. He has left his mark and designed one of the few cars I like from the 1950s.

kiwirob (Rep): Shoulda, coulda, woulda said Feb 24 at age 96, except I didn't have his obit on my desk when I was posting. But you're right..., "recently a while back" is bad grammer and doesn't make sense.

FYI, Roy was Edsel chief designer (they called us stylists back then) but after the E flop he went to the UK to head up the design of the best-selling Cortina for Ford of Britain. I worked for him on Torinos, T-Birds and such in Dearborn in late 1960's when he returned to the US. Helluva nice man. regards...jack
