The 2013 NHL Playoffs!

Thu May 02, 2013 1:47 am

Well, they've been underway now since yesterday. Since nobody else posted about it yet, I guess I'll get this ball rolling.

With the start of the playoffs yesterday, we have the Blackhawks, Ducks, and Blues all picking up wins to lead the series. One thing that I find interesting is that the Blackhawks had to go to overtime to pick up their hard-fought 2-1 victory. Game two in this series should be interesting. St. Louis also picked up a 2-1 victory over the Kings, and Anaheim had the largest margin of victory on opening day with a 3-1 decision over Detroit.

Tonight, well it's very obvious how much Sid Crosby is missed in Pittsburgh. If that's not bad enough, Orpik also was a scratch. Boy, do I feel for those sorry-looking Penguins.

Yeahhh... no Sid, no problem.

That was their approach while Sid rested and recovered (which he's continuing) from that slap-shot injury at the end of March, and it very much still is. After two periods they're up 5-0. Will the fighting Isles find some life and get into this series?

Meanwhile, Boston is about to post a 4-1 decision in their favor over the Leafs. Later tonight, we have San Jose hosting Vancouver...

Ok... thoughts...

Judging by tonight's performance, the Islanders are for sure going to win the cup   . Kidding of course. I think this is going to be a pretty interesting playoff run for all the teams. I have Chicago and the Canadiens making the cup. I wish my Wild could get it done, but starting off playing the Blackhawks was a death sentence. Hopefully they will reorganize and come back strong next year.
This is how I have my bracket. Now I'm no expert so obviously chances are it is wrong. But fingers crossed!

No. They should thank their lucky stars that they were fortunate enough to squeak into the playoffs and earn a little extra revenue.

The only people surprised by that are Leafs fans. Honestly, I live in southern Ontario and the tweets and Facebook statuses have been beyond obnoxious. Literally dozens every day.

Anyway...Bruins in 5.

I'm one of the biggest Habs fans out there...but I'm skeptical to whether they can beat the Pens, especially if Crosby is back. Obviously I hope they do, but I won't get my hopes up too high (like all the Leafs fans).

It should be interesting for sure. My roommate is a huge Pens fan so a lot of it had to do with ticking him off. But I think they can do it. Won't be easy though.

Both of my roommates are from Ottawa, so this first round is going to be a really tense one in my apartment.

It's a possibility, but Price needs to get his head out of his ass. He's been slacking lately and making Budaj look really good.

Yeah... well they overcame a 2-goal deficit and then went ahead 4-3 in the 3rd to actually get a win. Kudos to them.

As for the Penguins, that CANNOT continue or they'll be eliminated very prematurely. They'll be even bigger laughing stocks than that fabled 1993 team. At least THAT team went to the 2nd round!

I will be at the Ol barn this afternoon for Game 3. Hoping the Isles continue to play the hard nose 60 minutes of Hockey that got them here. It is now a 5 game series with the Isles holding home ice advantage so lets see how Fleury responds today.

Should be fun to hear the place rocking again! And for those who dont remember how loud the Coliseum can get...this will help you remember.

I'm sure it has been something! Try not to fight! My roommate and I have been yelling at each other during the games and I'm not even an Islanders fan! Though I think the Penguins vs Flyers series last year was more exciting.

It amazes me that a team as good as they are have so much trouble in the playoffs. They should be up 3-0 right now.

It was a good game, too bad the islanders couldn't get it done. Looks like I may lose the bet with my roommate.

My Wild aren't playing too hot right now. Looks like they'll hit the golf course a little early this year. I was hoping this would be their year with the Parise and Sutter pick up, but the rest of the team needs to fall in line too. Maybe next year!

With Price in the goals, you can be sure that the Habs won't pass even the first round. Another shameful performance from him tonight vs the Sens. I'm not a Price hater, but he's been AWFUL in his last games. Tonight, goal #2 and #3 should have been stopped. You cannot afford to make those kind of mistakes in the playoffs.

Ottawa is leading the series because they have a goaltender. Period.

No I agree with that. However, the local press out of the Burgh is saying that the Islanders are packing a bit of a punch. At the same time, though, the Pens need to learn to not give up a lead regardless of which period they lead after. They blew the lead in the 2nd period of game 2 which resulted in a loss. They had a solid lead yesterday, but blew it in the 3rd period allowing the game to go to overtime. Luckily the power play came through as Dupuis made sure to end the game with the Pens on top...

I will give them this tho, they're not the same God-awful unit that embarrassed the hell out of their fans last year! I was happy to see Philly advance (fellow Pens fans, I root for anything PA, ok? If Philly advances and we don't, I'll still root for them. However, I still root for Pittsburgh when they go face to face.), but the Pens play was just sickening. Philly showed up to play hockey. I don't know what the hell the Penguins were doing other than mistaking the playoffs for the ice-capades or Disney on Ice or something...

WTF Habs, seriously, do you know you're in the playoffs? Do you know that from now on it's do or die? What happened that you completely stopped playing in the third period tonight?! Are you tired? With a 48-game season, I hope not!

I cannot believe that lack of intensity and energy in the third, just shooting the puck as far as possible and provoking icings every 5 seconds. Damn, you looked like 80-year old men on skates. What a sad display. I'm lost for words...

Compared to the actual 80-year old men up in the booth who don't know that kicking the puck into the net is against the rules.

I'm distraught right now. Words cannot describe how rattled I am at how lazy Montreal's defense was in those last two minutes.

That too, but I don't take this as an excuse. Some calls were bad tonight, but it does not explain why they lost. They were outshot 14 to 4 in the third period. They were barely skating to protect the puck in their own zone. They started to play with more conviction after the first Sens goal, but moments after they were back in their laziness. I don't understand this. They had a great opportunity to even the series and instead of that they just offered at 3-1 lead to the Sens, who were not even good tonight.

Now they have to win the next 3, which is going to be pretty much impossible.

I seriously do not want the Pens to lose anymore to the Islanders. If they do, they'll be the biggest laughing stock in the entire history of the league! I am not kidding about that!

Still tho, how did the Habs finish, weren't they the number 2 seed? What is it with the top two seeds struggling? LA (I don't remember how they finished) already beat the Canucks, eliminating them, and the Blackhawks are on the verge of eliminating the Wild...

Ottawa is also bigger up front. That counts. Habs are a small speedy team, and you can get away with that during the season. Playoffs are different.

Price has been spotty, didn't get much help on the tying goal, then bummed his knee out. Felt sorry for Budaj as he had no chance to warm up and the shot was deflected in any event.

But the Habs are pretty much done. Might win Game 5 but that's it I think.

Vancouver, how embarrassing again. Now have lost 10 of their last 11 playoff games, only scored I think 17 goals. Vigneault is a dead man.

Yes, but since they clinched their playoffs berth and lost Emelin (who seems to be a way bigger loss than I thought!), this team is different than the one I knew this season.

Markov, who had a great season start, can barely put one skate in front of the other. He's so slow I'd be faster walking on the ice.

Yesterday, I still don't know why Therrien held Galchenyuk to 1:35 of play in the last period.

And sorry, but Price should be more solid than that. Yesterday was fine, but he's not been at his best lately.

Anyway, I should not complain too much. They went from 28th in the league to 4th in just 48 games. The reconstruction process is only beginning.

Yes I know. But I'm sure if they could use their speed it would be ok. Problem is that they haven't used it since quite a few games. And last night's 3rd period was just pathetic. Yesterday, it's the Habs who lost the game, not the Sens who won it.

The Penguins-Islanders series has brought some joy into my heart. I was sitting in my room last night studying for finals and I heard several F bombs in a short period of time. When I remembered the game was on I checked the score. Lets just say my Pens fan roommate has been pretty angry. Hope all of you Canucks fans are okay today. I have to imagine it isn't too pleasant in Vancouver. I hope Montreal can do something! I never root for them, but I don't want to lose the bracket challenge to my roommate!

But they're not using their speed because they're getting smacked around. Personally, I thought the hit on Ellers was OK. Tough, but OK: open ice, no direct head shot. But it sent a big message to the Habs: we can hurt you big time.

Habs SHOULD have won Game 4, played well for around 45-46 minutes, then just stopped playing in the 2nd half of the 3rd period, and absolutely panicked at the end. Sad to see it.

Agree about Markov, started the season really well, made a huge difference on the PP. But now, it's painful.

Regarding Vancouver, the media are clamoring for Vigneault's head, but the real problem is the GM, Mike Gillis. He's the one who signed Luongo to a too-rich and far too long contract, then signed Schnides to a 4 (?) year deal at $4M per. That's $12M for their goalies and the salary cap is coming down next year. He could have resolved this problem last summer, could have resolved it at the short training camp, could have resolved it just before the trade deadline. But no. Kesler was pressured into returning before he was ready, and he is just not the same player that he usd to be. The twins are 32 now, and RFAs summer 2014. This team is getting old -- together -- and I remember how long it too the Green Riders in the CFL to rebuild after they all basically retired within about 3 years of each other. It took a generation. And where are their draft picks ?

You guys are waaaaaaaaaay to quick to bury the Isles here. Yes it would be an upset if the Pens go down but this is not the same Islander team of say the last 20 years!. The league should have been paying attention to them this season but of course they didn't so what seems like a team that has no business being in the playoffs could not be farther from the truth.

My ears are still recovering from the last 2 games at the Ol barn.

Well, at least it's done. No more suffering in these playoffs. I am not going to comment on the match, because it is clear that they were playing without their heart since game #3. Today, the Sens just finished off a wounded animal.

Horrible thing is, I have never seen so many actions during this series that were translating in "it's your fate to lose this series, it's your fate to lose this series, it's your fate to lose this series...". Absolutely nothing went on our side. Just nothing. No lucky rebound, no lucky puck, no luck shot, no downtime from Anderson, goal post here and crossbar there, missed open net opportunities, strange calls from the refs against us and almost none against them (yes, I hate criticizing the refs, but let's be honest, they were one-sided in this series). You can be the most talented player or team in the world, if luck is against you, you're screwed.

Of course, I have to congratulate the Sens because they did a good job. But since I am a bad loser, that's all I'm going to say.

Anyway, I have mixed feelings about the seaon. At the beginning I thought we would not qualify for the playoffs. After the first game of the season vs the Leafs, I said "ok, nothing's changed since last year". But then they started to play really good (because, yes, they were playing really good!) and my fear of not making the playoffs changed slowly over the course of the season to the excitment of being a possibility, then a reality. Once we secured the playoffs berth, I had good hopes for the series and my good hopes have been washed away in 5 games by a solid Anderson team of Ottawa.

So, I don't know if I should be happy for a season that was not meant to be so good, or if I should be sad because they were not able to keep the momentum until the end. Very strange feeling.

Now I really don't care who wins the Cup, as long as it's not the Bruins.

Telling comment about the Habs season from (I believe) Garry Galley of the HNIC broadcast crew. They had an excellent season and overachieved for the first 35-36 games, then everything started to slide - goaltending and team defense, scoring, the lost. So instead of a 2 vs 7 seed series, it was likely more 4 vs 5.

I live in Halifax, NS and except for a few Habs fans most of city is die-hard Boston Bruins.

Maybe because Boston is closest to us?

Odds are slim on this but Ottawa - Anaheim final keeps popping into mind. Repeat final of 2007 but with Ottawa winning cup this time?

Likely because of the long-standing links between NS & NE. At one time it was thought that NS would join the USA rather than be a founding Canadian province. Likely more Patriot fans than CFL, too. Which to me makes it more likely than not that Halifax will ever get the 10th CFL franchise. I think Quebec City wins this race, assuming Mr Wettenhall can be brought round.

Odds are slim on this but Ottawa - Anaheim final keeps popping into mind. Repeat final of 2007 but with Ottawa winning cup this time?

Very slim for Ottawa, less so for Anaheim, Ottawa likely to face Pitt next round, probably will not advance.

Also Bruins winger Brad Marchand is from Halifax, well Hammonds Plains, still part of HRM...

Haven't seen any comments on gthe Leafs epic collapse against the Bruins. Are all A.netters part of Leafs Nation ?

I actually could not believe what I was seeing at the time. Although the Bruins were storming the gates, even with 3 minutes or so to go I thought the Leafs would hang on. But no. One of the things I did pick up on during the game was that Reimer was not handling rebounds particularly well, and this is exactly what did them in on the winning goal.

Despite the collapse, lots of good signs for the Leafs going forward, Reimer being one. Jake Gardner emerging as likely a top four defenseman, Franson too if he can stop passing through the slot. Nazem Kadri is still a work in progress. Kessel and Lupul of course bring a lot to the table, and van Riemsdyk I believe is a hugely underrated player who can give you a lot of good minutes every game.

I'm still a Jet fan (whole team is a work in progress there) but I have to say the Leafs near term future is, actually I think, looking better than the Habs.

LA off to a "quick" start in round 2, they seem to be getting revved up, Pitt over Ottawa, no surprise. I believe NY-Boston and Detroit-Chicago will both be very physical.

Oh my God, no. Sorry, I'm a Habs fan. I did not see the series at all, but I read about the "collapse" in the finale game. A real shame for Toronto, but they can use this for next year. Experience builds up on a succession of failures!

Shhh! I'm still savouring the moment

Immediately after the Bruins scored in OT to take the series, I posted this picture to my Facebook wall with the line "To all my Leaf fan friends who obnoxiously chirped me when the Habs lost, I hope you're hungry..."

It was interesting that all those people that annoyingly chirped me for days and boasted about their team's superiority on Facebook and Twitter had nothing to say to me at that point. The silence was more delicious than the pie.

Mmmmm... Humble pie with a side of karma. Good stuff!

I liked last night's game. I just hope Pittsburgh keeps playing like that. I'm reading the facebook discussions on the Pittsburgh-Post-Gazette website and some folks on there seem to think Fleury might not be playing with a clear head; his wife gave birth to their first child recently, and I guess it's occupying whatever free time he has left -- which is understandable. Vokoun is a hell of a goalie, and if we need him, he's there. Not to rule out Fleury tho, he's still a hell of a guy.

With that said, yes; PIttsburgh got a hell of a win yesterday, but Ottawa is still a dangerous team. The Islanders were a dangerous team, and they very well could have made it a long, potentially fruitless series.

Nope, it's because I haven't showed up here until now!

Bruins nearly fell apart, but THE COMEBACK was amazing, and now we lead the Rangers 2-0, I like our chances.

Anyone else think a Ducks/Chicago Western Conf. game would be epic?

Doesn't look like that is going to happen. I didn't think Detroit was getting out of first round but I am glad, and now tie with Chicago 1-1 in series

One thing that was cool was all 6 original 6 teams made the playoffs this year, 4 are left and 2 will move on to the third round, unfortunately the 4 couldn't all be in separate games so that there could be a chance of all 4 winning and playing in the conference finals.

I think I heard the last time all 6 original 6 teams made the playoffs was 1993. The last Original 6 Stanley Cup Finals was New York vs. Montreal in 1979. You would probably have to go back to just 6 teams when 4 played in the Conference Finals (which at that time was the first round and they weren't conferences.)

I really do not want to see another Pens complete collapse like we saw last night! I know I can't really speak for the Sens (kudos for sticking it to a team that must have thought it was time for the ice-capades), but what unfolded in the last 90 seconds of the game should NOT have! You're up 1-zip and on a power-play! Seal the kill! Instead, they went into prevent mode; played to not lose. Guess what... THEY LOST!!! I seriously hope Bylsma and crew learned something from last night. Otherwise, they might as well be calling the golf course for their premature tee times now!!!

All the way, the team thats knocks out the Canucks always wins the cup...

As an aside Alain Vigneault fired by the Canucks today for two years of dismal playoff performances.

Pens smashed the Sens today too...

Good show by the Pens. Iggy and Neal really came alive in that game, scoring 2 goals each.

What I found really surprising is that Detroit now leads the series... and they play again at Joe Louis Arena. Should be interesting!!!

Also, Madison Square Garden will either rock tonight or be the quietest place in the States. Boston has the Rangers on the brink of elimination.

It rocked, as Rangers managed to win Game 4 in overtime, but my Bruins came back for the win at home for Game 5. On to Pittsburgh...

The LA vs. San Jose and Detroit vs. Chicago matchups are both 3-2 after five games, so it will be interesting to see who goes to the conference finals.

I will be honest. I am a bit concerned about Pittsburgh's prolific offense and their ability to beat Boston's defense. I'm thinking this could be a low-scoring drawn out series.

Ottawa shocked a lot of folks when they beat the Canadians, although that team seemed to be on a bit of a decline leading in to the playoffs. They came to Pittsburgh, and the Pens actually stumbled in one of the games when they should have taken advantage of the opportunity to secure the win. Ottawa took advantage, and ultimately won the game. Pittsburgh did learn a lesson from that, and executed it quite well to win the next to games in convincing fashion to end the series.

Now, they play a Boston team that is performing at a high level, especially on defense and in goal. Crosby, Malkin, and crew are very fast, but do they have what it takes to beat the bruins' D as well as Rask? Boston might plan to have their offense crash the net, getting many shots off for a chance at a rebound (which I think is a weakness for Vokoun). Can Pittsburgh's defense pick it up to help Vokoun? And can Vokoun continue to prove he's a human wall in front of the net?

I'm thinking (and hoping) Pittsburgh does just enough to advance in 6 or 7.

Oh, BTW, kudos BOS for advancing! May the better team advance!

I think this is a good point but actually I would be more concerned about this with Fleury in net than Vokoun, Im a Fleury fan but have always felt that he generates too many rebounds. Fleury IMHO tends to deflect a high percentage of his saves where Vokoun again IMHO controls the puck a little better in front of the net.

Agreed. Pittsburgh in no less than 6 and more likely 7. Im not sure which team will benefit/suffer more from the long lay off between series.

Hmm, that is a valid point as well. Come to think of it, I didn't notice Vokoun generating too much in the way of rebounds. Fleury, on the other hand, well he did let quite a few easy saves get past him, and they proved costly...

Bruins take Game 1, 3-0. But there's always the possibility that this is just a fluke and we have a long way to go. I like our start, now we have to finish!

I hope it was a fluke. Many fellow Pens fans seem to think it was. If that seriously was the best the Pens could do, then they don't belong there...

For the game, no fluke. The Bruins were inside the Pens heads pretty much all night. But can Boston play that way the whole series ? That's the question.
