Well, the old thread is archived - guess we've all taken a break!

Anyway, some recent shots from Big Bear, CA:

Some photos from a recent trip to America

The morning after arrival, up before sunrise so down to the beach to see dawn. My daughter admiring the view

I thought the way the waves reflected the sunlight was interesting

A view along the beachfront at Laurel beach with some of the birdlife

I recently got a Canon 8-15 so trying out the 8mm setting. 600D camera so you don't get the whole fisheye

A view with the lens at 10mm, moon in the sky just before dawn.

Oooo, how do you like it? I really want to get an ultra-wide-angle fisheye.

Certainly is.

Laurel Beach in CT. Just outside Milford, down the road from New Haven. My brother lives near there, but hasn't the room for 5 of us so we rented a house in Laurel Beach for the week.

Quoting vikkyvik (Reply 4):

It's a very nice lens but you do need to watch where you use it at the wider angles because some of the distortions of straight lines can be quite distracting. It can give some interesting views and effects with the right "lines", e.g. (not in the US)

And another "dawn" shot (at 11mm)

The usual complaint about it is the lens cap isn't very secure on it because it clips over the lens hood (due to the bulging front element) and falls off.

And another couple I forgot to add. Blonde squirrel!

Absolutely, as far as the men are concerned, but I'm not sure about women. You have to be careful where women are concerned in a Muslim country, though any Algerians we spoke to who had English were at pains to tell us they were "modern Muslims", and a lot of women wear western clothes. The tables are actually turned on the tourists there: their tourist industry has been shot the last twenty years, and not helped now by the terrorist attack on the gas plant last January, but the locals actually take pictures of you, which is a refreshing change.

It's funny thing about the poorer Arab countries: the people are the warmest, friendliest, most welcoming people you can meet, and you can walk the streets any hour of the day or night and you won't be mugged, robbed or pick-pocketed. In fact you'd be far more at risk in Barcelona, Madrid or Rome. Yet when changing money or buying something you really do have to check your change. I've been short changed in banks, historic sites, taxis etc, without them even batting an eyelid when challenged. Having said that, it wasn't really a problem in Algiers as it happened probably only twice, but then it is the most prosperous of the North African countries. You just have to have your wits about you and don't get annoyed if it happens. You just point out the "mistake" and take it light-heartedly. It seems to be part of their culture: we're rich to them and they assume we can afford it.

I was in South Africa for 10 days recently and I'll be sure to post some of the wildlife photos here (been to the Kruger Park etc.). First one I'd like to share is a bit of an experiment. We were at a bush camp in the park, almost no artificial light and the stars and Milky Way were beautiful. The result isn't 100% satisfactory since I came out blurry (and lost my balance during the exposure), but it was a good evening out nevertheless.

The light you see is from a spotlight they fixed at the waterhole next to the camp.

More of the fisheye and others from a trip to Norfolk last week

A boat for crabs, waiting between missions to the pots

Lying on the beach, a view at 300mm of a crabbing boat soon to depart

A fulmar. My admiration for bird photographers increased trying to get a photo of this bird or its friends as they flew along the cliff.

The striped cliffs at Hunstanton, through a fisheye. Being limestone, coastal erosion causes large blocks to fall off, some of them the size of a small car

The Cromer Lifeboat between rescue missions

Cromer pier in the mist. The lifeboat station is at the end of the pier.

View from on the big wheel at Skegness funfair, a magnet for kids of all ages.

The bridge over the Humber from underneath. Over 1400m span.

Nice pics everyone.

I stayed in Page Az, many years ago. I wish I'd known about those spectacular sandstone landscapes then.

Quoting Braybuddy (Reply 21):
Norfolk is one of the places on my 'to do' list.

It's nice for its flinty villages, wide beaches and open spaces, as well as being great for seafood.

Today I went to my local beach (Formby, 40 miles away) and inspired by the ability of the predominantly British sunny-day public to turn somewhere nice into a sh!thole... e.g.

some other objects left to their fate

Unfortunately this beach has no waste bins and there was litter everywhere, like a litter cloud had passed over; bottles of all sorts, disposable barbecues... and I had nothing to even make a start to try and tidy up other than putting it in one heap (and probably getting fined for it).

A weevil. If you've ever wondered about those little tracks in the sand....

This evening curiosity got the better of me and I went to see the thing that shines green at night on top of a hill near the M66 in Haslingden, north of Manchester. It's called the Halo, an art installation in a disused quarry.

And there are nice views over the surrounding hills and wind farms that have sprung up in the windy bits

Snagged this a few days ago as a large storm moved out of the area while the sun was going down. I fixed the contrast and cropped slightly and got this... Much better than I expected - especially for an iPhone.

I don't normally feel bad for killing moths, but this one made me sad. Saw him inside my apartment, right by my door. He was clearly injured, and only moved a few inches in the few minutes I was watching him. Had to put him out of his misery (after taking a few photos, of course):

How do I resize photos to make them fit on A.net? I have tried, but it won't work for some reason.

I went out to Dulles Intl last week in hopes of getting some departures pic, instead I got a rare treat. I was waiting for the heavies to depart when I looked up and saw what I thought was a hawk with a piece of cloth hanging from it's talons. As it got closer, I realized it was an osprey with a koi or someone's pet goldfish. Anyways, thought I would post my first non-av pic on A.Net.

Cheers,
Andrew

As usual since a few years now, I'm posting some 24 Hours of Le Mans pics. This is the free practice of Wednesday:

Some very smart shots there!

The "resize" function in Photoshop -- or any other editing program -- is handy, or you can shrink the pic in Windows Photo Viewer, then take a screenshot and crop it in any photo editing program.

Loving the photos, especially those of Algiers.

Thank you!

That is as purely aviation as it gets, actually...!

Actually cargo aviation, too, while we're at it!

Fantastic pictures.

I must say that every photo posted in this thread can be legitimately classified as award-winning photography. Thanks very kindly to all for sharing.

One of these days I'll try to figure out how to post photos but I'm entirely sure non would compare with the standards I've seen here. Thanks again. regards...jack

It's very simple! Open an account with one of the photo sharing websites such as Photobucket or Imgur (I use the latter as the resolution seems to be slightly better). Upload your pics to the site, and on Imgur, once they're up there, click on one. A new box will appear showing the pic and various codes:

http://i.imgur.com/xOOGNvG.jpg

Copy the code with [img] at each end and paste it in your post. It's as simple as that! The other sites use similar methods. And don't worry about comparing your pics with anyone else's: the thread is not a competition, and only a handful of posters seem to be professional photographers, so there's nothing to be intimidated about.

Happy posting! And I'll look forward to seeing your pics.

Monorail riding off into the sunset. Last day of operation is June 30.

Have 2 days off work later this week.. might go and do a couple of "laps" before they pull the thing down!!!

If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

Thanks again. regrads...jack

That is awesome - great catch!

Reminds me of the time I was at the Lemoore NAS Air Show in 2011, and right in the middle of the Blue Angels display, this guy flew right overhead:

Been a bit panorama-happy lately. Gorgeous sunset light over the port today:

Thought you'd gone and bought a fisheye for the first photo, but then saw the filename and realised it's a stitch. Can't see any joins.

If all else fails there are flowers..... some pics from last night with macro lens and recently repaired ring flash, just within the warranty period fortunately.
