How To Save Audio Cd On PC As Mp3?

Thu May 16, 2013 11:34 am

A long, long time ago, on a computer far, far away... I used to be able to pop an audio cd into the cd-rom of my computer, and have a version of musicmatch copy/convert the tracks, and save them as mp3 files on the PC.

Now I have a new computer, and the only version of musicmatch I could get my hands on does not appear to feature the option of copying the tracks, and saving them as mp3 on my harddrive.

So my question is, can anyone recommend a good (free) program which will do this job?

It's been awhile since I've done it myself but you could go to download.com or the like and search for a CD Ripper - lots to choose from - and look at their reviews/features to figure out which best suits your needs. I can't remember which one I used to use otherwise I'd gladly have recommended it!

You use an audio programme like Sony Sound Forge and copy the CD tracks to your computer as WAV flies. Then you click on each of these tracks and save them again as MP3 files. Job done.
I did the same with my CD collection and the LP collection left to me by my late father.

iTunes does this really rather well. You can configure it to "fully automatic", i.e. it will download data such as band names and album/song titles and add them to the files that it creates. There's even a setting that will automatically create files as soon as you insert a CD and then eject the thing when it's done.

You can just use Windows Media Player's rip feature. Note that the default ripping format of Windows Media Player is WMA, so if you want MP3 files you have to go to Tools->Options->Rip Music to change the file format.

Have you considered recording on to metal bias (type IV) cassette tape?
Use a good quality tape deck with dolby 'B' noise reduction and set the record levels properly.

Depending on your use I would suggest ditching MP3 and going for a more modern format, possibly lossless (my preference being FLAC).

What I do is find the song on YouTube, copy the URL and paste it into a program that rips the audio track from the YouTube video and converts it into an MP3. There's not a song that I want, that I don't have. I've dissected videos (using RealPlayer), posted the portion that I want (ending credits of a movie), uploaded it to YouTube, and then used this program. It works flawlessly.

Here's the program.....make sure to set it to 320 bitrate.

I use a site called Keepvid that allows you to download the video itself or as an mp3 file.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give a few of them a go until I find one that works for me.

I do that too, but with some CD's I have, the songs are not always to be found on youtube, and certainly not in high audio quality.
