Nikon D3200 Or Canon EOS 650D?

Sat May 18, 2013 11:51 am

I'm looking at buying a consumer DSLR and these currently are my 2 choices. I've read loads of different reviews and the recommendations seem to be around 50/50.

I will be using it when I travel to New York next month and at home taking photos while outside. I may make use of the video function but not very often. I'm not worried about all the 'cool' features e.g. pivoting display, touch screen, wifi etc.

I prefer the price of the D3200 but if the 650D is a lot better I am happy to pay the extra. I want clear shots that me be used up to poster size.

I'm currently leaning towards the D3200 but would like some advice. I will be using the standard lens to start off with on either.

Many thanks,

I bought a D3200 last year and was very happy with it, though I upgraded to a Nikor 18-105mm lens recently for sharper pics. If you do go for the D3200 I would suggest buying the body, then going for a better lens. There's nothing wrong with the lens that comes with the camera, but if you want better quality pics you'll need to get a better lens.

I shoot with Canon gear (currently a 5D Mark III and also have recently owned a 7D and XSi/450D).

I'm not loyal to any particular brand and would buy the D3200 without question given the above choices.

I'm a Canon user (I have a 7D), but both Canon and Nikon manufacture great cameras. The choice of the body is less important than the lens you will attach to it. I'll give you the same suggestion as Braybuddy: invest more for a very good lens than a good body.

I've ordered the Nikon D3200 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses.

Will this fit both?

They will fit the basic 18-55mm lens, but probably not the larger one.

I forgot to say, if you want to compare the 18-55mm and the 18-105 lens check out my pics on the current Non-Av Pic Q2 Part 2 thread and the recently archived Part 1. All my pics on the Part 1 thread, apart from the last set, were taken with the 18-55 lens and all the pics in Part 2 were taken with the 18-105 lens. You can see that pics are sharper with the latter lens:

Thank you very much for your help. Yes, I can see the photos with the newer lens are sharper than the standard one.

Mine comes with the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm lenses. I'm not going to pretend I know loads about lenses because I don't, but what kind of results should I expect from the 55-200mm lens?

Picking it up on Tuesday, very excited

Thanks again!

I am really pleased with my D3200, but I agree I'd go for a lens upgrade, depending on what you wanna take photo wise.
