I reckon Denmark will walk it. Ireland will do well for a change, and could even be a winner if Denmark don't make it. We're certainly going for the gay vote this year with the half-naked drummers in leather trousers. Norway will do well to, and is also a possible winner.

Personally I don't understand why Denmark is so populare ... Sorry to my Danish friends ... But I don't see anything special about it. It's too regulare. We've heard and seen it all before ... On the other hand, Norway's song might just be too unusual piece for the contest. Not really alot of tradition of electronica Music in that competition ...

It's just a very strong song. It's formula to a point. An awful lot of Eurovision is rubbish, but this has an extra zing to it. Drums seem to be the big thing this year!

I learned watching euronews the other day that half the entrants have Swedish songwriters or producers behind them, so I'm really wondering what is the point of it all ?

That was fun. Most of the others were crappy but not even funny. The Greeks were fun too. The French entry was not really eurovision material (but at least it was truly French).

+1 When I heard it during the week I was thinking OMG what have they done but actually live it was good. Seems to be getting decent feedback also . I loved Cyprus though shame it didnt get through.

Ireland is one of the best ones for a while. If I had to pick one it would be Belgium.

I also like Malta / Ukraine / Russia / UK .

For sure. One of the strongest entries we've had for a while IMHO. Maybe Europe hasn't forgiven us for Dustin . . . or Jedward.

You really never know what way the voting will go. I wouldn't have rated Ukraine, but then I only heard it a couple of times. Some nice talent in the show for once: the Azeri lead singer, the bearded guitarist from Armenia, and there were a couple of handsome bearded guys in the Greek entry, but then you don't have to throw a stone far to hit a bit of talent in Greece!

Petra was superb! Loved her humour, and she carried the whole show off with fantastic confidence and professionalism. Loved the interval act where she sang the song sending-up Sweden. The Swedes add that nice zany touch, and don't take the contest too seriously. Surprising, really, considering that they practically own the contest at this stage.

La Suede et Petra douze points!

Really? I was positive that it would make it to top 3. Ukraine has showed a high level for the last two years. Gaitana last year was also pretty good.

Carrément! I thought that Petra was amazing. It was so refreshing to see just one presenter instead of the usual awkward duo, plus her "half-time" routine was brilliant. I can't say I was overly impressed with any of the music (but that's Eurovision for you!) It was also kind of refreshing to see a lack of political voting this year.

I secretly hope, though, that the UK has the balls to withdraw next year - I know that the big 5: UK, France, Germany; Spain, and Italy contribute the most money and are automatically qualified. I just don't see the point of spending BBC licence payers' money to help stage something we have no hope of winning.

In any case, my "Eurovision" favourite is My Lovely Horse from Father Ted  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzYzVMcgWhg

I've been up since 3:00 am as I was watching the Contest, and it was well worth it to stay up for the semi-finals and the finals! Though I rooted for Ireland (and I am devastated that it came in last), I wish Denmark all the best in hosting next year.

Quoting mdavies06 (Reply 25):

I found it all right, actually.

I was talking to a friend of mine who's a big Eurovision fan, and he notes that the voting pattern seems to be more random this year, with the UK getting votes from places where it normally does not get votes (e.g. Romania). The elimination of the ex-Yugoslav voting bloc seems to have worked in favor of the ex-USSR and Scandinavian blocs, particularly the latter as all five Scandinavian countries (six if I include Estonia) made it to the final.

However, there were still clear evidences of bloc voting, but with smaller blocs: Georgia gave its 10 and 12 points to Armenia and Azerbaijan, respectively, for one. Cyprus still gave its 12 points to Greece. But I did not expect the ex-Yugoslav states to largely go for Azerbaijan, or for the UK to only give one point to Ireland.

I thought this year was rather lame. Denmark won deservedly but it was essentially the same act as last year´s. Azebaijan was pretty original and inventive. Greece was also great. I thought Georgia had a beautiful song, I´m surprised they didn´t get far. Ukraine also was a good one. Italy´s song was great and the singer was fantastic. I just don´t think either were Eurovision material. Spain was just sad. I could not understand the words at the beginning.

All in all a mediocre year. Petra was excellent though.

I don't get that. I would have thought that an electronica song would have had a good chance With the British, Irish and French Public. Atleast the younger generations. ...

Yet it's also slightly reassuring. Year after year the UK give high votes to Ireland. This is no doubt down to the fact that there's a large Irish immigrant population in the UK, and, of course, as you say, the Nationalist vote in Northern Ireland. The low vote we got this year from the UK is even more surprising given that Ryan Dolan is actually from Northern Ireland. Could this be proof that the 50/50 split between televoting national juries is -- shock, horror -- actually WORKING? I'm just surprised that Ryan didn't cream the gay vote with his two hot drummers:

She certainly knew her audience: her remark that they "hadn't found the right woman yet" was priceless. As was her line in the interval song about Sweden, along the lines of "meatballs seasoned with horsemeat".

As for the actual voting, the jury representatives should be told they have 30 seconds to deliver their results or they'll be cut off. The grandstanding by these complete non-entities delighted with their two minutes of fame is as boring as it is predictable.

This show has it's ups and downs, ... I'm sorry to say, but the Swedish hosts botched this broadcast in some ways - but made some really nice and refreshing things on the other hand, just were not enough.

The butterfly was a great idea for Sweden 2013, and it was a good move to have an identifying theme in this competition but it was not enough... ever since the Turkish disaster of 2004 (when the uninspired and terrible "heartflag" logo was used for the first time, and alas continues to be used) good taste everywhere has suffered.

Each year a design that represented the country and the time had been used. The heartflag must die.

Anyway, the hostess was really bad - she looked like a swedish middle-school teacher - and the way she ended the competition before 5 countries had yet to give their votes just because at that time it was evident that Denmark had won.. that was incredibly stupid.

Then then the competition would have ended after only *half* the countries had delivered their points when Rybak won!

Have the Swedish never heard of a victory lap? To see those 12 points roll in after you *know* you've won but before some middle aged over made up hag declares it?

It's a show. Sweden managed to make it bland.

Congratulations Denmark and by all that's good and holy, please ditch the heartflag and best of luck to you to make this a great show next year!!
Tonight we fly

Although as I said the song itself warranted more votes for sure.

Again, I have to disagree, it's my favourite Eurovision Song Contest in years!

I'm sad for Norway, because I really really like the song. We even gave them two votes from our household, but the UK gave them nothing! Clearly not everyone liked it... But Denmark's entry was pretty good too. Congratulations to them.

I must say this year songs were more rather boring and nothing surprising. The big favorite (Denmark) was one of the few good songs besides Italy, San Marino (Which I still don't understand how they did not qualify), Azerbaijan, Germany, Malta and Ireland that were good.

Italy and Germany deserved a better position in the final, I do not think that the Greeks with their alcohol its free were better than them, tho their performance and song was entertaining.

Azerbaijan was a surprise as they made a *bah* song a good one with their on stage choreography.

Hope that Copenhagen 2014 comes up with a whole bunch of surprises. Congratulations Denmark!!

I don't know about other countries, but here the ESC/MGP still resonates fairly well with the younger audience. At least when I was in my teens and twenties, it was a good excuse to have a party, celebrate the summer, and listen to some music of highly variable quality!

Of course, it helps that a lot of the songs Denmark sent to the ESC back in the 80's and early 90's have become pop classics, so they were pretty much omnipresent when I was growing up.

Oh dear . . . But the Eurovision wouldn't be the Eurovision without some argument over voting or plagiarism. Most of the songs sound as though you've heard them all before though . . ..

I thought Sweden was the safe bet to win, that was a quality song! Denmark was boring I thought.

I live in Spain & everybody is saying they thought the Irish song was good & they can't believe how bad it did! I knew we weren't going to win this year but LAST???.....I liked the song & thought it was good.

I'm Spanish too and I must admit that I didn't have high expectations on ESDM, but after seeing the performance last night specially on the last chorus I thought we deserved to be in the top 15. Being after the Finish wedding weird and awful song made me sick.

It seems like an issue is now causing troubles for Azerbaijan.

It does seem rather unthinkable that 0 points for Russia is possible from this country. Given the standard of Russia's performance and cultural links.

Hopefully its only a storm in a teacup?

And another incident :

RTE objected to controversial Linda Martin Eurovision joke

LAST night's Eurovison final in Malmo didn't see Ireland add to its record number of victories. But one of Ireland's previous seven winners was the target of a jibe by presenter Petra Mede.
During the segment, Petra explained Johnny Logan had won the Eurovision three times.

Footage was then shown of Linda Martin's winning song 'Why Me', which was written by Logan. Host Petra then suggested it was Johnny Logan in drag.

The comment sparked a huge response on twitter, with many finding it funny, but others leaping to Martin's defence.

Linda Martin is completely over-reacting: it was a throwaway remark which wasn't aimed personally at Martin, IMHO. Petra Mede was doing a send-up of the Eurovision and it was an obvious comment to make. Martin is making the classic mistake of making an issue of something which would have been completely forgotten by now had she kept her mouth shut, or, even better, laughed at it.
