France Enacts Law Allowing Gay Marriage & Adoption

Sat May 18, 2013 3:04 pm

This law, passed in April, has now been ratified and enacted. It has been a surprisingly polarizing debate due to the very different framing of the two sides of the argument: the conservatives arguing from a Christian notion of marriage and the secularists arguing from a purely affective choice definition of marriage. As the starting points are different, so too the conclusions. The stakes are raised as marriage and adoption are part of the one law.

That's indeed great, however that 'dear'   M. Copé almost immediately announced that once his party will back at the helm, they will have to completely rewrite the law. Are they really that blind ?

No they're not that blind, they're just playing the opposition game. In this case though it will really be hard to justify in a couple of years. In the case of Copé he was for the law some years ago, like many in his party, including his boss at the time president Sarkozy.

Excellent news for France! Now the "Manif' pour tous" are definitively defeated! There were protests too when the PACS (civil partnership legislation) was introduced several years ago, but that was quickly overcome and this was, rightly, seen as a point of pride for France. In a few years (even months) we will be wondering what all the protests were about over the marriage for all law.

This is true - the UMP have to sort out their own camp before attacking the opposition. Although I'm no Hollande fan, the right is a joke just now and has to respond to this sensibly if they have any chance of reelection in France.

Really ? I didn't knew that.

Hopefully.

Indeed, that's the least the can do, especially with their change of stance on the matter.

Oh yes, I remember that lousy comedy they produced for the UMP leadership.
