Why (And How) Mark Sandford Won Election

Sun May 19, 2013 7:36 pm

I suppose many are still complaining about "why" and "how" Mark Sandford won the recent election to the House of Representatives; it took a lot of reading and research, but I now have it all "boiled down" so anyone who is able to read English should have no trouble understanding.

The last I noticed, almost everyone on A.net was bemoaning that ....."Sandford is a schmuck", "Sandford did this", "Sandford did that"........but I also noticed a total lack of any mention of Mr. Sanford's opponent, one Elizabeth Colbert Busch. So.....I started looking "into" Mrs. Busch; apparently, I'm not the only one who has "looked into" Mrs. Busch; the I.W.V. ( "Independent Women's Voice" ) also "looked into" Mrs. Busch, rather throughly; and apparently what they found left them VERY "unimpressed" by Mrs. Busch. The I.W.V. spent 250 K on political adds, which focused mainly on Mrs. Busch's stance on several issues, including her refusal to sign a pledge to repeal Obamacare; Imagine that ! Seems like there are some SMART Ladies down in South Carolina ! ( Way to go, Ladies ! ) She had an unfavorable rating of just 33 percent before the IWV ads began running, but that jumped to 41 percent among late-deciding voters while the ads were running in the last week of the campaign.

Research conducted by IWV two weeks before the election showed Mrs. Busch's position on major issues — Obamacare, unions, raising the debt ceiling — were well outside the mainstream of the district's electorate, observed RCP, ( Real Clear Politics ), which called Obamacare the "silver bullet" that persuaded undecideds to vote for Sanford.

It seems that female voters were more likely than men to cite Obamacare as the main reason for voting for Sanford, RCP writer Bill Pascoe pointed out. ( Thank you Bill ! ) ( Bill also made a VERY important point, which I completely agree with, but because it explains in detail why the ladies of I.W.V. "strategy" was so effective, I'm NOT going to share THAT with you ). ( They may need to use it again, don't you see ?)

Let's face it; before this race for the House seat, I didn't even know that the idiot Steven Colbert had a sister; but when I found out that he not only had one, but that said sister was running against former Governor Mark Sandford for a seat in the House of Representatives; Obviously, anyone who is Steven Colbert's sister is from the same "gene pool"........which fact alone would be sufficient to make most normal, responsible people quite dubious, and apparently the good ladies of the I.W.V. were "dubious" enough to raise 250 K, mount a huge campaign, and send Mrs. Busch back home, kicking and screaming !
'
So now you know "why" (and "how") Mark Sandford got elected.

Wow! A right-wing organisation was unimpressed by a Democratic candidate! Say it isn't so!  Wow!

So basically to win she should have supported republican ideals ? Well, what's the point then ?

Doesn't the GOP have better propositions than repelling obamacare ? Wasn't that law voted on years ago ?

Well I started looking "into" the IWV. They're a conservative organization and they aren't shy about it. What is so surprising that they would go against a Democrat? Imagine that!

Topics? How about putting a rather weak candidate in a solidly red district?

That's like putting a Republican to run in DC. Odds are that no matter how well that Republican campaigns and is connected with the people, if he ain't a Democrat, he won't go.

That argument you bring up might resound more in a toss-up district. I was just hoping that the people would cast their votes on something other than party affiliation. No wonder people end up so uninterested in politics: candidate X has all the ideals I believe in but doesn't belong to party A, so I won't vote for him.

I still don't see the point of the thread. I mean I can understand someone begrudgingly voting for who they see as a hypocrite (preaching family values, cheats on his wife while vanishing without anyone knowing) when they are closer aligned politically than the opponent, but you seem to be going out of your way to celebrate the fact he got elected despite his cheating and saying it's the "smart choice."

Honestly, I could care less what a guy/girl does as long as they can be effective in office, but it is shady when you belong to a party that preaches family values then you go and do that. And vanishing from office is not very good, I don't care what your personal beliefs are.

What is the point of this thread? Are you happy that he cheated? Will you be ok if he supports "family values" after this? Your glee seems strange, I'm sure republican voters in SC aren't exactly thrilled with Sanford and saw him as a necessary evil rather than vote in a Democrat

*facepalm*

The same people who are fine with a governor abandoning his state and then electing him to a different position are the same people who want a one party nation. The ones who say "if you are against us, you hate America!" Funny how "freedom of speech" means "whatever I believe is the only thing you need to support."

That's another thing: When the right runs attack ads ad nauseum, they say "Well, we are just telling the truth!" or "But no one will be interested if we run boring ads." But, when a Democrat does the exact same thing, it is blasphemy. How dare she run attack ads!

Independent Women's Voice

I Googled them and the first listing included:

Quote:

A voice for the mainstream. IWV is dedicated to promoting limited government, free markets, and personal responsibility.

Google Independent Women's Voice and you'll find they are not "independent"

and in a Political story:

Quote:

Independent Women’s Voice is another group that is suddenly flexing its muscles. IWV has invested more than a half-million dollars in key 2010 races — not enough to leave a big footprint in races but a significant amount for an organization that had never previously spent money on elections.

Already, IWV’s presence has been felt: In May, the group was the only outside organization on the airwaves in Hawaii’s House special election, spending about $250,000.

Heather Higgins, the organization’s president and chief executive officer and a longtime conservative activist, says the group is planning an independent expenditure campaign in the fall.

So the IWV spent a lot of money throwing mud on a woman candidate while supporting a slag of a man who was shacking up with some bimbo while he was still married. Only conservative women's groups would support a guy who treated his wife that way. The guy is a mental midget as shown by his treatment with his wife, his trespassing after the divorce, etc. Should make a find GOP Representative as he will simply do what he is told to do. Well, yes. Because, the fact is Sanford deserted the people of South Carolina. Sanford is part of a political sect who believes in marriage between one man and one woman is sacred. He lied to his wife to be with his mistress and he lied to the people of South Carolina.

Apparently, people in that district of South Carolina can forgive liars and cheats. Only if they put an (R) behind their name. Otherwise, if any other letter is behind their name, that person MUST be held to impossibly high standards.

Look at Anthony Wiener. He simply texted pictures of himself to a woman and he was forced from office. His party does not tow the same "biblical" standard. He was removed from office over a private matter. He did not abandon the people of his district.

It's called a double standard. Anyone from Outer Mongolia would see that and see what a shame it is for the people of South Carolina to elect a fraud and liar again and that so many people still support him even with lesser issues from opposing candidates.

As a native South Carolinian, I have no problem with Sanford. He was a great Governor for the state despite his shortcomings. He reformed not only our public schools to get us from dead last in the nation in terms of education, spear headed reform to our public university systems, and greatly reduced the state debt. He vetoed pork budgets and cut state spending. He was great at pro growth tax reforms for the state and limiting state spending. He helped mentor our current Gov. Nikki Haley who has very similar views and has done a great job as well for the state. Yes, I am a Republican and he shares most of my ideals and values as well as the ideas of the majority of South Carolinians. Everyone makes mistakes but he paid the price and has went through a very public fallout. As far as I'm concerned he's shown me and the state how humble and sorry he is/was to his shortcomings. While running for Congress, Sanford started off every campaign speech with an apology and what has changed in his life and what he has learned for the events of his affair. I'm more sympathetic towards him than President Clinton and John Edwards due to the steps and remorse Governor Sanford has shown. Not sure why the left has such a problem with Gov. Sanford when they seem to want to wash Pres. Clinton's shortcomings under the rug. Im proud of the entire SC politicians that are representing this state in D.C., I know I'm biased but we have one of the best congressional teams of any state who are championing smaller government, pro business growth, and standing up for the people who sent them there. Its great to see people like Sen. Graham, Sen. Scott, and Rep. Gowdy just to name a few who are demanding answers from a lot of these scandals the White House is embroiled in.

As far as I'm concerned he's shown me and the state how humble and sorry he is/was to his shortcomings.

The problem I have is this:

If the left is involved in a scandal like this, they'd never hear the end of it. The person will be dead and still 100 years after, the right will still be taking about it. Now, when it's a person from the right, then we MUST understand that people make mistakes, and by saying sorry once or twice, everything's fine and dandy. Notice how Clinton has been an ex-president for 12 years and still the Lewinsky scandal comes up. However, the Sanford conduct must be forgiven/forgotten.

It's the "Well if Clinton was involved in something like this and was unaffected, then Sanford also deserves a chance". mentality that I dislike in a way. It was much more than this. It's about a person that is married, that belongs to a party that puts traditional values and marriage at the top of their priority list and that doesn't think twice before "investigating and prosecuting" any misuse of public funds and inappropriate conduct in an elected office, going against all that.

Now I'm not from South Carolina (much less from the District he's representing) so I can't post an opinion of him, but I can tell you that even if a person of my party was involved in a scandal like this I would not hesitate to call him/her out and vote against him (in primary or a general election).

The only similarity is: both men were cheating on their wives. Clinton did not lie to his staffers and the country about what country he was in. What makes things even worse for Sanford, in the eyes of the left, his own party keeps beating the drum of "family values" every election cycle. The left knows people are human. The left understands that people cheat and make mistakes. The left knows it is wrong but willing to forgive. That is why the left does not make "family values" a voting issue. The left has a huge problem of "do what I say, not what I do" and that is what the left has a problem with where Sanford is concerned. He is spouting a huge and loud "do what I say, not what I do."

Stafford wasn't President, and the person he was cheating with wasn't a powerless star struck intern. What Clinton did demonstrated and absolute abuse of power, How the feminist left let him walk on it while whining incessantly about Sanford only demonstrates the absurd double standards of the left.

Sanford won because the left couldn't field a viable candidate to beat him. That says less about Sanford and more about his opponent..

Sanford won because it's South Carolina and a strongly conservative district. Mitt Romney won that district by 18 points last year, so it's no shock that Sanford won.

No. Actually, no one wanted Clinton to walk. Everyone agrees that Clinton cheating was a bad thing. However, as I pointed out before, the really absurd and bizarre thing is the right screaming about "family values" and how this "Christian" nation needs to vote for "family values" like one man/one woman but they do not hold those within their own party to those lofty standards.

Like Newt Gingrich. Most of his policies were opposed by Democrats, but he was seen as more moderate. But, the thing most on the left found really absurd and a huge double standard is he was on his third wife. Who had been his third (that we know of) mistress. Democrats had to hold him up to his own party's standards.

I think a majority of people in that district just could not bring themselves to vote Democrat because of what they had been told about Democrats. How ALL Democrats are socialist and how ALL Democrats are evil and how All Democrats...

Plus, the mud slinging only works on the right because they have the media on their side. It does not matter how great your plans are. If the media is against you, you have lost.
