Costa Concordia: Trial Date Set For Captain

A judge in Italy has ordered the trial of the captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which ran aground in Tuscany last year, killing 32 people.

Francesco Schettino, 52, will be the only defendant in the trial, which will begin on July 9 in the Tuscan town of Grosseto.

Schettino had unsuccessfully attempted to plea bargain with the court earlier this month, when he had requested a sentence of three years and four months.

Italian prosecutors rejected his request.

Five other potential defendants successfully sought plea bargains in their cases, which are now being handled separately, court officials said.

Schettino is charged with manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning the ship while many of the 4,200 passengers and crew were still aboard.

I hope he gets what he deserves and it reflects the loss of life that he was a part of if not solely responsible for.

Is his sentencing date the day after?
This fool should rot in jail for his lack of respect for Physics, the unpredictable, and the risk tolerated by paying passengers:

Can't wait for this to be heard in court.

"Honest, the reef isn't marked on any charts"
"I heroically steered the ship towards Giglio harbour, saving countless lives"
"I was the last one to leave the ship"

You just couldn't make this stuff up.

I just presume he'll get off on some convenient technicality.

The story has fallen from the news in the last 6 months. I expect since no one is asking questions that it will just disappear off the media radar.

He deserves to be punished as an example to other childish captains. This being Italy Im sure he won't be.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Oh, I think people still remember. Personally I think they'll throw the book at him. I don't know how I feel about him "getting what he deserves" - obviously a foolish, arrogant idiot but with no history of being a sailor, who the hell put him in this position in the first place? Italy is a seafaring nation, there must be loads of career seamen they could choose from. But instead they picked a company stooge. I bet some people who knew this guy probably said, "Schettino!" as soon as they heard of a shipwreck.

(A buddy of mine was an FO at BMI Regional about ten years ago, he said half their CAA-reported infractions were the work of one captain. Know what I mean?)
