What Is Going On In The UK Today?

Fri May 24, 2013 5:51 pm

Ok so we all know of the tragic events in London earlier this week, resulting in the beheading of a Soldier, by so-called extremists. This has its own thread of course, but to summarise its caused a national outrage (quite rightly) and the EDL is in full propaganda mode (from 15,000 to 110,000 likes in less that 24 hrs on Facebook).

But today, so far, has either been a very bizarre set of coincidences or is there something else at work? First the BA incident at LHR - which I fully believe was just something that happened, kudos to the entire BA crew by the way.

Following this alarming but non-event, a PIA jet is diverted after two pax try to storm the cockpit and they divert to STN which is used for terrorist related diversions as/when necessary.

Later this afternoon, the M6 motorway, one of the arteries of the UK, is closed in both directions due to a suspicious vehicle at a service station (still awaiting more details on that) followed by the news just now that London Bridge train station in central London is closed, after a man was seen running around with an axe!

Th alarming thing is, it's only 6pm! What next!? Is this l just random coincidence or could this be something else? Many are saying it could be 'diversions' for something to follow, assuming this means a terror
attack. Worrying times.

Thoughts?

I find your comments in strange contrast to the ones in the Boston marathon bombing threads where some seemed to be saying that in the UK such things are normal and us wussie Yanks need to keep a stiff upper lip, buck up, and get on with things. Personally I'm glad to see us nip such things in the bud when possible, and deal with the offenders harshly when they are caught. I'm not glad the degree to which we've all given up a lot of privacy for a lot of this stuff to be effective, but not at all in opposition to the idea of locking down trains and streets for a period of time so that law enforcement can do their job with the minimum of hindrances.

I can see your points, although I struggle to comprehend why anyone on this site would
really dismiss what happened in Boston. That's awful.

I think the problem in then UK is we are afraid to over penalise or take swift action, for fear of losing friends (ie the EU) and also because we have lost a sense of pride as a nation. Not because of immigration or terrorism really, just in general.

I worry the Muslims will become targets in the UK, of hate crimes carried out by the English Defence League and BNP etc etc. Then there would be war. I hope it doesn't happen, but it's been predicted for generations. I hope the nation sees sense and don't disrespect the many peaceful
Muslims in the UK.

It's just one of those days.

A few unrelated events making the news in what was a tough week for the country after what happened in Woolwich. The incident at London Bridge was resolved very quickly, turned out to be a hoax/false alarm and the PIA incident is something we've seen before and I'm sure we'll see again in the future but just like today it will be dealt with accordingly with no big fuss. Any news on the M6 disruption, didn't see it in the news.

The BNP and EDL extremists are far easier to catch, they are open groups who are not believed to be part of ongoing plots or forming terror cells. Any disorder by these people is usually dealt with quickly with the main perpetrators arrested and charged by regular police forces. The immediate aftermath will see protests and so called revenge attacks but they'll fade away as the days go on but the security forces will continue to monitor them.

I think the security scares are related, everybody is on the edge and more likely to see potential terrorism in whatever may be happening.

I mean, even the actual event, if there was just the killing, and the perps had ran away instead of blabbering about Islam, it wouldn't be clear that it was a terror act.

Yes I agree I do think there's a link.

There is a second EDL March planned for Monday and as its a bank holiday here in the UK, they are expecting quite a turnout. They had one today in Newcastle with around 7,000 people which quite surprised me.

More reports of attacks now taking place on Muslims as revenge, but thankfully no widespread violence or angst as yet. That said, after Monday, that may all change.

As for what else is going on in the UK, this article caught my eye:

The Economist: Sex doesn’t sell: An old industry is in deep recession

Seems all is not going well for those who make their money lying down:

Quote:

“It’s stupidly competitive right now,” she laments. More people are entering prostitution, agrees Cari Mitchell of the English Collective of Prostitutes. Some working women in Westminster say they have halved their prices because the market has become so saturated. In London, and increasingly elsewhere, immigrants provide strong competition. But Sophie, an expensive escort in Edinburgh, says she is seeing an influx of newbies including students and the recently laid-off, many of them offering more for less.

I suppose things are really really bad when the world's oldest profession is struggling.

It's a relatively small island, with a long history, quite diverse (not so much in terms of ethnicity but in other aspects too), very outward looking to the world, with 62 million people living on it. A lot of stuff happens, sometimes in the space of a short time.

Well, there you have it. Another act of terrorism to add to the list.

The media reaction in the UK is interesting, the BBC does seem to be almost ignoring various incidents that's have happened. Whilst SKY news is, typically, sensationalising.

Another march planned by the English Defence League tomorrow apparently, this time in London at Downing Street - did no one tell them David Cameron is on holiday in Ibiza, idiots.

Hoping it all calms down a bit once the Bank Holiday is over, and people see sense

Breaking news just now that someone has been stabbed in Woolwich, very close to the site of the murder of a soldier earlier this week. No more details yet. It's also thought members of EDL were chanting at the site of the murderded earlier this afternoon, which may be linked.

Oh dear.

Looks like that was just the beginning apparently. Hopefully authorities get a grip on everything going on over there soon.

Actually, those posts WERE real at one point. Visit their pages and you will see them talking about it and how people reported it forcing them to get deleted. I'm just curious though, anyone in the area know if the old Muslim man who was brutally stabbed to death out of 'revenge' made any headlines? Or was that kind of brushed to the side.

Just heard that 3 more Muslim boys were stabbed and 3 female Muslims were harassed and stripped of their cloths in Central London. Those might be fake too because I heard it on the internet so...

Out of revenge was meant for the second half of my post where the 6 Muslims were attacked. The old man stabbing was in reference to FCAFLYBOY's post about how he fears hate crimes will evolve from the recent events going on there. I was just pointing out that they've been happening. My words got mixed up out of haste

Those twitter posts, the senders correlate in gender and roughly age with the arrests reported.

Incitement to commit violence is an offence and has been for a very long time, before the Internet was even thought of.
Though in the past it was usually aimed at deterring trouble in public order situations, or against the sorts of people we now call 'stalkers' to give two examples.

Those postings are pretty explicit and pretty stupid to say the least. The senders were clearly ignorant, not to mention the perfect trail you leave, even posting a pic of yourself!

It they had any of their wits about them they'd maybe understand that they are sounding little different to the people that incite Islamist based violence.
Enough of them have been arrested for this, though that creep that ran Islam4UK (before it was banned), takes care to not be so direct, he skirts around the law.

Looks like the reports of "a wave of attacks against Muslims" after the London incident was a fabrication by Muslim groups, including a government-funded group which is now losing its funding due to their lies.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/journalis...-hate-monitor-to-lose-backing.html

Quote:
The project, called Tell Mama, claimed that there had been a “sustained wave of attacks and intimidation” against British Muslims after the killing of Drummer Lee Rigby, with 193 “Islamophobic incidents” reported to it, rising to 212 by last weekend.

...

Contrary to the group’s claim of a “cycle of violence” and a “sustained wave of attacks”, only 17 of the 212 incidents, 8 per cent, involved the physical targeting of people and there were no attacks on anyone serious enough to require medical treatment.

The rest were online insults, internet rumors, etc.

Ingenious really, when you think about it. Islamophobia as a government-supported "industry", as it was described in the Guardian's earlier article on this. I wonder how widespread these kinds of agencies are on all sorts of topics, and how much they're absorbing out of gov't budgets around the world.
