Breaking News: QE2 Renamed NEWLiFE By Owners

Sat Jun 29, 2013 12:57 pm

The iconic former Cunard ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2 is renamed NEW LIFE by their new owners "Oceanic Group" a dual Singapore/HongKong maritime company.

This is the latest update in full from Louis de Souza. Louis, who worked on board QE2 for several years, has contacts with crew members on the ship at Dubai Dry Docks.

Quote:

QE2 Status as of 29th June 2013

*Power onboard still coming from shoreside but limited so is her AC
*Captain and Crew from Ukraine still onboard
*Only maintance work is carried out by this crew
*Ship is now called NEWLIFE still waiting for more info on this.
*Word is the Chinese have backed off on taking her to China due to damage on engines and tank plates.
*Paint on the ship's exterior is faded her teak is in miserable conditions
*Inside nothing has been changed or demolished but all starting to get in bad conditions

They had renamed France/Norway the Blue Lady and we all know how that ended... a beach in Alang... this time it ay very well be a scrap yard in China with the former QE2 being sold for metal cost.

It's all been Dubai-ous since she arrived at Port Rashid

Time to say goodbye?

Is the lower-case "i" in the thread title intentional? Did they actually do that in the ship's name? Or was that a typo?

(Not being snarky, just curious).

I loved those pictures of the QE2 in that article. She is a real stunner.

The MENA countries have no culture of maintenance, things just fall apart from neglect. I suspect this is what will happen to the QE2. One day that company will turn around and say she is beyond repair and by the sounds of it that day is not too far off.

I have no real issues with her neglect in Dubai, as this is only to be expected, but I'm more outraged (for want of a better word) that the UK did not really attempt to save this iconic piece of British design from the scrapheap.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

While this might be big news for some people, I think the label "Breaking News" is hardly appropriate. Now if the ship sinks then it might be "breaking news", but here we're talking about some derelict cruise ship that had its name changed. Here's more breaking news: This happens every day!

With the sun right in my face while typing on the A.net forums dark background even with proof reading I must have missed out on this detail in the title.

Should read NEWLIFE or NEW LIFE whichever way the owners will decide to have it.

She surely is, she's a gonner like I always said she would be, the ship is a huge sinkhole for money, it's just not worth the cost to convert to a floating hotel nor will anyone really be able to afford to keep her in tiptop condition as a museum ship.

Latest update from Louis de Sousa via his contacts on the Ship:

The name of Captain at present is LOGYNOV GRYGORIY

Why they have hired a Ukrainian crew is anyone's guess.

Is it a matter of cost?

The Chinese owners "Oceanic Group" could have hired a Chinese crew. This is rather strange.

Quoting na (Reply 4):
This is not "some derelict cruise ship", its the icon among the older cruise ships.

She is not a CRUISE SHIP! She is an OCEAN LINER. There is a difference. Until 2008 with the launch of Queen Mary 2 she was the only remaining ocean liner in the world. Now QM2 is.

An ocean liner has a stronger structure, more powerful engines, and higher freeboard than a cruise ship. While a cruise ship will certainly survive a big storm, an ocean liner is meant to proceed through that storm at speed. A cruise ship is built to withstand heavy seas, while an ocean liner is built to operate normally in heavy seas. Another way of thinking is that a cruise ship is a hull built around a resort hotel, while an ocean liner is a hotel built into a hull.

I am not knocking cruise ships. Cruise ships are fantastic machines designed to perform a mission, but that mission generally involves calm, warm water (Caribbean, Hawaii, etc.), and nobody aboard is in any hurry to get anywhere. On a liner, the setting is the North Atlantic and the goal is to get from New York to Southampton as quickly as possible. Because liners are stronger and more powerful, they also cost about 1.5-2x as much per ton to build as a cruise ship.

The liners were the only way of getting across the ocean for a long time (it was wooden sailing ships before liners) and only vanished from service after the advent of the 707. Within five years of the 707's roll-out, more than 95% of transoceanic travel switched to jet aircraft.

Sorry. I should have specified "great liners." The exact definition is subjective, but neither of these count among the great liners.

And neither of them is doing liner duty today.

I thought seamen traditionally considered it 'bad luck' to rename a vessel.

I guess this isn't protocol anymore? Or, are many vessels renamed after original christening? Just curious...jack

I have just logged to the forums to post on this.

Received from friend Louis de Sousa

QE2 updates as of 7th July 2013 ( from Dubai World)

*QE2s new owenrship is called QE2 Shipping LLC, based out of & owned by Dubai

*On the Technical side, teams from Drydocks World, who were charged with bringing the vessel back into class to enable her sail on her own steam to the Far East and Oceanic Group, who have provided an on board crew of 32, have worked on the first two phases of the project beginning with an overall check and work scope identification which was essential for the vessel after a long lay by. Following this a number of activities were undertaken on the vessel including hull & structural checks, steel repairs & renewals, ballast tank, air conditioning, sea suction & cooling system inspections, pumping out, cleaning and steel renewal in deep tanks, overhauling of stabilizers and bow thrusters, cleaning of diesel oil tanks, sewage tanks and other tanks & safety checks, repairs and upgrades. The aspect of overhauling her engines had commenced & was currently well underway

*Based on the new timeline for completion of the technical aspects in Dubai HE confirmed that a tentative date had been set for a gala sail off party in Dubai to bid farewell to the QE2 on October 18. She is then expected to reach Singapore on Nov 1 where she will stay for 3 days before proceeding to Hong Kong for another 3 days and thereafter leave for the selected="true" shipyard in China to complete her transformation.

*Project New Life-the transformation of an iconic liner the QE2 to a luxurious all suite hotel with a permanent place in Maritime history is being handled with good care by Drydocks World in partnership with Oceanic Group International Limited.

Several news releases came out today. Note how they all came out on the same day.
Dubai made so many official annouoncements since the Ship ended up at Port Rashid as the last stop of her final voyage.

Remember the Palm Jumeirah project??

It could very well be the same here with the Grand Lady of the Seas being sent to a Chinese breaker's yard after she gets to Hong Kong.

Articles published today. Thank you Louis de Sousa for passing on the information today.

Dubai will never sell QE2; liner to be all-suite luxury hotel by 2014

The last of the great luxury liners, the Queen Elizabeth 2, now moored in Dubai, will set sail again for her transformation into her final avatar – as an all-suite luxury hotel.
Once done the luxury liner will be moored in the Far East – the destination still kept as a closely guarded secret.

Dh330 million plans for QE2 renovation revealed by Dubai company

DUBAI // The QE2 is to leave Dubai on October 18 and will sail under her own steam to China, where she will be converted into a luxury floating hotel.
The retired liner has been docked in Dubai since 2008 when a division of Dubai World bought her from the Cunard line. Plans to use her as a luxury hotel docked at the Palm Jumeirah fell to the wayside after the economic crash.

Storied QE2 liner set to depart Dubai in October

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An official involved in the transformation of the storied passenger liner Queen Elizabeth 2 into a floating hotel says the ship will set sail in October for Asia to begin the $90 million overhaul.
But full details remain under wraps. The Singapore-based group leading the project says only the QE2 will be refitted in a Chinese shipyard before being moored in an undisclosed Asian port as a 400-room hotel.

the $90 million overhaul

This figure concerns me, just does not seem enough for this kind of project.

The cynic in me leans towards the Dubai people being willing to spend big bucks to get their white elephant(their concept, not the wonderful ship they have left languishing for too long) to some place in Asia where it will sit for a while with the engines being kept operable... then some situation, economic, accident etc will lead them to decide the project is no longer viable ... and with her last breath of steam the QE2 will drive herself up on to the mud flats of Alang or some similar hell hole.
Thus saving face by not having the grand old lady rust into the mud at a Dubai wharf.

Latest information on QE2 "NEW LIFE" just received from Louis de Sousa

Hear hear everybody... This is the Chairman's speech (Chairman Mao Dubai style)

The QE2-"New Life" - Shaping the Future

Good morning and thank you all for attending this important announcement regarding the iconic liner QE2.

Let me start by thanking our teams and the consortium for their hard work and diligence in everything that has been done so far.

I would also like to thank Oceanic Group and other stakeholders who made this possible.

This is without doubt one of the most challenging and bold projects we have undertaken, once again embodying that the "Dubai vision to the future never sleeps". It is bold because a great piece of maritime history will once again be able to actually steam out and become an iconic global ambassador for the UAE.

read more here - this is where all the new project details are provided

http://qe2hotels.com/new/www/html1/a...mis_Juma_Buamim_speech_English.pdf

25 November 2008 - QE2 arrives in Dubai
18 October 2013 - QE2 will leave Dubai for China under a new name.

Nothing has happened in between.

Time to book a plane ticket to Dubai and be there on said date... It will be the last chance see this glorious vessel in her present form.

me thinks you are very close to the truth. She will hit a sand bank somewhere and the whole project will go to the races. There is the possibility that the Ship won't even make it to Singapore or wherever.

They will pick some undisclosed shipyard in China and have her towed and then she will be ripped apart... and then... The End.

QE2 latest write-up

Thanks to Louis de Sousa for providing the link.

QE2- STORMY WEATHER AHEAD?

These are uncertain days for QE2. Storm clouds hang over the hallowed ocean liner once again as she gradually prepares for an October 18th departure to some as yet undisclosed Chinese shipyard, allegedly for ‘conversion’ into a three hundred suite luxury hotel.

The voyage will apparently take her via Singapore and Hong Kong. Seven of her nine diesels are now said to be in working order, and she will indeed make the voyage under her own power.

Of course, the great unknown is: what actually happens when she gets there, as opposed to the very terse amount of information actually being eked out by the owners.

I just took 45min to read most of this and the only thing I could wonder is why we don't show as much compassion towards people as some seem to show towards a hunk of steel...breaking news, sad faces, anyone would think the world has come to an end or someone died.
