They Broke Into My House And They Hurt My Mother

Wed Jul 03, 2013 1:51 am

Last night I was out with my lawyer. My brother was working in his two nightclubs. At midnight I got a call from the police telling me to get home ASAP.

A couple of people broke into the house THROUGH MY ROOM, and one went to my mother´s room, tied her up and beat her. Lightly. But she´s a 71 year old lady, half blind. Why did they do that?

Now she´s ok, she refused to go to the hospital, but she´s scared and nervous and hurt.

I feel so bad and guilty. I was not going out Saturday night. I should have stayed in. It was a last minute decision. This wouldn´t have happened if I had stayed in.

I haven´t slept for 48 hours.

Anything similar out there? How did you cope? I keep thinking they will come back in through my room with me sleeping. We are hiring armed guards tomorrow 24/7

But I can´t shake off this guilt. I should have been here. My mother would not have been hurt and traumatized like she is now.

NO! The sh1theads that did this are responsible for this, NOT YOU! I am very sorry to hear of this, but glad she is not badly hurt. I hope they catch these turds.

I know it's hard not to think "what if", but this was a very unpredictable, rare occurrence. If we all spent our time preparing for such events we'd never live at all, and I'm sure your mother wouldn't want that for you.

That is pretty terrible. Insecurity is a serious issue these days. Hope your mom gets better physically and emotionally. Are you here in Mexico?

Yes, in Monterrey, in San Pedro specifically.

AR385, I am so sorry to hear about this. What zckls04 said is spot-on: It's not right to live 100% of the time preparing for/expecting horrible things to happen. Only the thugs bear any responsibility for what happened.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing by hiring armed guards - stay in contact with the police (I'm assuming the police where you live are not like the ones I've read about in guidebooks about Mexico City) until they nab those thugs.

Thanks for the advice. But you are right. The police in these parts are a different sort. You can actually trust them.

I know, and thanks for pointing that out. The feeling is just there though, but it is fading.

Not really sure why my post got culled, but I'd like to reiterate my sympathies and best wishes. I for one worry a lot about this sort of thing happening to my nearest and dearest, and I'm glad that at least your mum wasn't seriously hurt. It will take some getting over of course, but perhaps at least the guards you're planning will bring some peace of mind. As others have pointed out, this is definitely NOT your fault - not even 0.000001% of it. Nada.

I hope she's feeling better already - and you too.

Today they caught the bastards. They were doing the same in a house literally two blocks from here. That house, however, had a silent alarm system and were caught red handed. They are three, and only their mother would give two cents for them.

Since we had a police claim the police called us to see if my mother would be willing to try an ID and she surprised me, fankly, by saying yes and could we please hurry.

With my mother´s ID and the fact they had petty weapons with them at the time of their arrest, this not being their first house robbery, plus the assault against my mother they committed here, they are going away for a looooooooong time. And Mexican prisons are not Motel 8s

I can´t help but feel some sort of warmth inside. Maybe it´s wrong but I don´t care. It definitely helped with the feelings of guilt and impotency I had been having.

Thanks everyone who gave me a lot of support in this thread and in their PMs.

That's truly excellent news. I have to admit that I never expected to hear this, and it makes for a refreshing beacon of positivity in this otherwise dreadful situation. Not a moment for popping champagne corks, but hopefully it will at least help you all to move on from this. Very well done to your mother too - it takes a lot of guts to face the scum that harmed her.

Not "dig a hole in the cemetery large enough for you and then stand again the cemetery wall to face the firing squad" anymore as described in Traven´s Treasure of the Sierra Madre"?
Joke aside, I´m glad that they got the barstewards. Besides that Mexican prisons have a pretty nasty reputation, I´m sure the police wouldn´t treat them with kid gloves as well. I´l bet they were "resisting arrest" and habe some bruises to prove it.

In reality, if they're the type of nasty cowards to beat up an old lady, I'd like to think that they were dragged in crying like babies.

Man, sorry to hear this. It's infuriating to read of such cowardice. And I can understand how traumatizing it would be for an older female as well. Hope she is OK!

Firearms. Might not be an option for your mother given your description, but I've got plenty of deterrence to any would-be burglar.

GOOD! Hope they string them up by their testicles.

I meant it in the sense of "they resisted and accidentally fell down the stairs while being handcuffed" or "They struggled and banged into the doorway edge".
A former fiend, who used to be in the British Army back in the 1980s told me that soldiers, who got caught stealing from their comrades regularly got their fingers broken by inserting the hand into a door hinge and then closing the door. The Militaray Police would write into their report that the prisoner refused to enter the prison cell and that unfortunately the door slammed on his fingers.

It's ok Jan, I did pick up on your meaning.    Similarly, they could trip down the stairs while being led out. Doesn't really happen so much in the UK these days I think though.
