KTVU: Your #1 News Leader For Asiana 214 Coverage!

Fri Jul 12, 2013 10:11 pm

This will be sure to be making the rounds ... KTVU pranked and running with it ... royally messing up the "names" for the pilots of Asiana 214.

Enjoy.

It absolutely makes no sense to me.
I worked in local news production for several years (now I help run a network) ... and it's the same in every news room ... the number of people this made it past is insane.

It probably came in through the station's assignment desk ... so there's one person, then you have a show writer (2), then the show's producer (3) ... then the graphics person who typed in the names and made the graphic .. (4) .. the show's director usually checks all graphics and scripts to coordinate them before hitting air (5) ... then we can probably throw in the show's technical director who previewed the graphic before putting it up on the air and could have called a last second kill ..(6) ... the show's anchor for proof reading the script before going on air (7)...

Something like this *breaking news* *we have it first* is typically always big ... so you'll also have the executive producer of the show chime in ... that's (8).

This made it by at least 8 people .... holy crap.

This saddens me actually, because when I lived in the Bay Area I felt the Channel 2 news was a cut above the others in terms of quality - and diversity. Channel 2 is based in Oakland, while the other major network affiliates (and smaller stations too) are out of San Fran; so the Ten O'Clock News would often feature stories of more diverse ethnic & socioeconomic interest than the other stations' half-hour yuppiegrams.

That something of this magnitude of ethnic insensitivity happened at Channel 2 is even worse than if it had happened at the other stations.

(And if it had happened at Channel 7, I wouldn't have been surprised at all. That news staff & station management couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat.)

That's funny. When this started popping up in newsfeeds, a lot of people were commenting ... "you sure this didnt happen at KGO..."

That's sad to hear. I grew up watching Van Amburg, Jerry Jensen, Pete Giddings (weather) and John O'Reilly (sports) on KGO 7. That whole team was one of the highest rated in the nation from the late 60s to the mid-80s.

I also grew up in SF and watched Channel 7 news in the evenings and KTVU Channel 2 news at 10 with Dennis Richmond. It's too bad that the news departments at these stations have gone downhill.

SOME college-age intern didn't pick up on this?

This is basic juvenile humor. Calling it "sophomoric" as one poster did above is a bit charitable. This is more "middleschoolic." I'm shocked (not exaggerating) that nobody along the editorial chain caught this. I'm not suggesting it was intentional; this is the sort of event for which only the most stunning incompetence can be blamed.

So Asians do find it grossly offensive for those calling on others to lighten up.

In a way possibly - maybe. Anymore the prompter is updated right from the news writing system at the desk of the producers/anchors/reporters/writers etc etc. The prompter person really doesnt get a preview and just scrolls as the anchor is reading.

Really bad idea. What will come out in the suit will be questioning what hurts Asiana's reputation the most. An inappropriate parody for which an apology was quickly given, or reports of less than stellar piloting and CRM procedures which have come to light. The latter will be heavily publicized and scrutinized through both the discovery phase and trial, if it gets that far.

Asiana is better off accepting the apology and moving on with their greater responsibilities.

When did suing became bad idea for any reason in this country. When A.Net published an op-ed about Korean Culture by an anonymous writer in the spirit of free journalism and open discussion, but named few American corporations along with Asiana, probably A.Net got cease and desist notice from one of the American corporations. They promptly removed the op-ed quoting a vague reason.

Asiana is not going win anything, at least they stopped from every outlet having a field day, in the process throw in NTSB to keep their press conferences in check.

When the outcome is surely going to make you look worse, when you're suing over an image problem. I thought I was rather clear on that.

What I believe will happen is that long before this even reaches discovery, other Asian airlines will take Asiana aside and have a word with them regarding how the revelations and public discussion will paint them all with the same bad brush.

Stop every outlet from having a field day? A little late for that. The names people will forever remember about the crash will be Captain Sum Ting Wong and his crew ... and that would still be the case even if the entire plane had wiped out.

Not really, they may be even happier that Asiana is doing this, last year there was a "10 worst airlines" report published by Business Insider using JACDEC data. There were so many inconsistencies in that data and report. That report was skewed to look certain airlines look bad. Most of the Airlines on that list should have sued both. BTW one of the founders of BI is banned by SEC from trading.

For a moment put aside the cultural issues with Korean flight crew aside and look at the accident data, Asiana can be portrayed as a safe airline. Last accident with lot of fatalities is in 1993. 66 fatalities twenty years back. It is all in how you present the data.

I'm not talking about cultural issues, I'm merely looking at how (it appears) they managed to crash a perfectly good airplane in ideal weather conditions.

I, too, myself thought it was a joke and went to their facebook page and saw it blowing up with comments and thought to myself ... "well, even people take The Onion seriously sometimes and this is just a casualty." In knowing the process and how many people it would take to get through it really took me 2-3 hours to finally be like "wow, this actually happened."

The lawsuit is a bad idea, but not because of their chances of winning. They actually have a very good chance of winning a lawsuit against the station given the low burden of proof afforded in civil court in the US. Really, all Asiana has to do is convince the judge that the station's misinformation damaged Asiana's reputation even a little bit.

If you recall your aviation accident history, there have been issues in the past with Korean culture (where you must always respect and avoid offending your seniors) and crashing perfectly good planes. Most notably Korean Air flights 801 and 8509.

I know it's fun to jump on the anti-Fox bandwagon (and god knows, I *relish* doing it), but you'd be hard-pressed to discern that this is a Fox-affiliate by their advertising alone. I'm pretty sure that crap wouldn't go down in the Bay Area, if they advertised themselves like other cities do.

Actually, after snooping a bit, it looks like this station is owned by Cox Enterprises and not by Fox itself.

Nope, that announcement only said they've "decided" to sue to the TV station. They will only be suing when papers are filed, and I doubt that will ever happen, because it'd be bloody stupid for them to make an issue out of this in the courts.

Quoting AeroWesty (Reply 24):
What will come out in the suit will be questioning what hurts Asiana's reputation the most.

Given the trial is anywhere in the Bay Area, the jury will know the context of the trial, which is that the actual Asiana pilots, Lee Kang-kook and Lee Jung-min flew a perfectly good aircraft onto the seawall at the end of the runway, whilst paying precious little attention to the airspeed indicators and many other visual queues on a CAVOK day.

Quoting DTW2HYD (Reply 25):

IMHO Asiana has stopped nothing. NTSB has not misspoke at any of their press conferences. The NTSB intern is sacked. The US Gov't side will close ranks. Asiana faces the huge risk that making a huge deal out of the pilot name issue will only keep the issues of the real pilots in the limelight. The spam will really hit the fan if the NTSB report hits shortly before any potential KTVU lawsuit hits the courtroom.

They had a 747400 F crash as well, which was likely caused by a Li Ion battery incended cargo fire. An airline is responsible to check the freight that is loaded on their aircraft and DGR has to be treated properly. They were just "lucky" that the shipment went on a freighter and not on a pax aircraft with 300 + passengers.

Finally, we are making fun of this aölthough three people perished. However, it could have been 300++ and it is in the human nature to act this way when a bad thing turned out lucky at least for the majority of people involved.

Asiana should think twice about suing the TV station, they should put their efforts to improvong cockpit resource management. It was quite a shock to realize that they have not learned from the mistakes their rival KE made in the 90s .
