Been to Berlin a zillion of times, mostly on transit to poland though, which always is something like central station -> s-bahn -> Quick check, TV-tower still there? good! -> hipster leave me alone, bloody moron -> Lichtenberg station -> Hell outta there! So that doesn't really count...

*Visited* Berlin maybe 3 1/2 times, and even though I like it as a city and I love the locals, it's just not my cup of tea.
Too loud, to wild, to hip for my taste and I'd consider myself everything but a boring person

Opposed to that I've been to

Copenhagen ~ 20 times
Warsaw ~ 15 times, but a bit like Berlin, mostly transit, but often with overnight stay. I still prefer Krakow and Gdansk over Wwa
Vienna ~ 15 times
London ~ 10 times

Additionally I've properly visited Oslo, Stockholm, Riga and Belgrade more often than Berlin, plus a dozen of visits to Barcelona and Zurich which, of course, aren't capitals so don't qualify

I'm pretty sure the only qualifying city for me is Bridgetown, and that's hardly fair ... you have to work to avoid Bridgetown if you visit Barbados, and DC is a speck on the US map by comparison.

I did a ton of work in Barbados in my consulting years, and I'm reasonably sure I went through Bridgetown at least once on every visit.

I've lived two years in my capital (and all my life in the suburbs) and worked one year commuting to it every day, so I'll have to go live in another capital to beat that !

No national capitals make that list, but for state capitals, I've lived in Wisconsin and Illinois. Never visited (traveled through a few times by train, but never stayed) Springfield. Rarely visited Madison. On the other hand, I've probably visited Sacramento, Denver, and maybe one or two other state capitals more times than the capitals of my home state.

That said, despite being in a number of state capitals, I've never been inside a state capitol.

Well, I have three citizenships, so I guess you could say that I have three capitals; however, I consider Washington, DC, my primary capital. I've visited once. On the other hand, I've visited Madrid 20+ times, along with other European capitals several times.

I've visited DC;
Mexico, DF
Papeete, French Polynesia
Quito, Ecuador
Panama City, Panama
Lima, Peru (though the legislature was chained shut at the time... very chilling to see!)
Paris, France

Me too, but the capitol of Belize is Belmopan (to which city I have never been, either...)

Well, my capital city is Wellington. Not including connections, I've only been there twice.

The only place that I can think of that beats that is Tokyo. I've been there about 5-6 times.

Not sure of number of visits, but I've spent way more time in Copenhagen, Dublin, Berlin, Paris and Rome than I've even spent in Stockholm.

my home state is Ohio; I've been to Columbus 4 times.

I've visited Indianapolis over 20 times,
I lived in Phoenix,
I've been to Tallahassee once,
Frankfurt once,
Madison once,
Oklahoma City once
Santa Fe once,
Springfield, MO once

Not the capital. Berne is the capital of Switzerland.

I live in the USA, so my capital is Washington, DC. I've been quite a few times, but it's beaten out by ATH by a long way. No other country has had my grace its capital with my presence more.

I live in NY and have never been to my state's capital. By that statement, I've visited several European capitals more than my own state's:
Berne, Switzerland (4x)
London, England (2x)
Paris, France (1x)
Warsaw, Poland (1x)
Vienna, Austria (1x)
Brussels, Belgium (1x)

Well i live in London so....

The capital city i've been to the most outside of that i guess would be Edinburgh (*50+), which isn't really a proper capital city.

So after that it would be Paris *2

After that (*1)

Brussels
Amsterdam
Rome
Vatican City
Washington DC
Kuala Lumpur
Oslo
Ljubljana
Madrid
Kiev
Tunis
Cairo
Nicosia

As for domestically, I've been to Sacramento far more times (lived there for 20 years) than Carson City (currently live in Reno).

If state capitals of the US count, may I then also include their counterparts from, say, Germany as well? Or shall we agree they don't count either?

Can't claim I visited capitals other than 'my own' more often, but having said that a quick back of the fag packet did reveal I've been to 40-some all in, and some of those more than 10 times. Few of them too many times to count.

National capitals? None. I can not count the number of times I have been to the state legislative building in Salem, Olympia, Salt Lake City, and Boise. I know I have been to the capital building in Sacramento at least 3 times just because. Carson City would be a tie with that. Because I was in Juneau for three months and walked by the capital building every day, would that count as multiple times? I say yes, but that is for the fans to decide.

you have to work to avoid Bridgetown if you visit Barbados

Well, BGI is in Christchurch not St Michael so is "relatively speaking" a little way from Bridgetown. If you are staying on the west coast in St James or St Peter and take the Ronald Mapp Hwy from the airport you can techincally avoid Bridgetown. But I get your point, if you want to do anything too much you will probably end up there at some point

I have never been to Ottawa but I was born, raised and worked in London for the first 23 years of my life.

Also been to Amsterdam, Paris twice, Tallinn, Valletta, Tokyo, Edinburgh, Budapest, Prague, Rabat, Nairobi and the aforementioned Bridgetown many times.

I have techinally also flown through Belfast, Lilongwe, St John's and Port Of Spain but not left the airports.

Blantyre and Dar Es Salaam are also the commerical capitals of their respective countries, but not where the seat of parliament is.

I live in Canberra, so this isn't a particularly fair test!

Other capitals that I have been to: London (goodness knows how many times), DC (2), Paris (2), Banjul (5), Rome (1), Dublin (1), Quito (1), Tokyo (1), St Helier (2)

As for US state capitals, I lived in NC but have never been to Raleigh (RDU notwithstanding). I have visited Richmond, VA, Boston, MA, and Nashville, TN.

For Australian states, I lived in Brisbane when I lived in Queensland so I wouldn't be able to override that unless I lived in a different capital (obviously ACT doesn't count)

Difficult for me to say, as I live in Manila (technically the metropolitan area, but for all intents and purposes the capital of the Philippines), but since I also hold U.S. citizenship, I can also say I've visited a number of capital cities more times than Washington, D.C., which I've seen once.

Of note:

Countless times: Manila, Warsaw
10+ times: Amsterdam, Tokyo [both mostly in transit]
5-9 times: Paris (5), Singapore (6)
3-4 times: Athens (3), Bangkok (3), Berlin (3), Bucharest (3), Taipei (4)
Twice: Kuala Lumpur, Lisbon, Madrid
Once: Beijing, Belgrade, Bratislava, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Helsinki, Jakarta, Jerusalem, London, Podgorica, Prague, Riga, Rome, Skopje, Sofia, Stockholm, Tallinn, Vienna, Vilnius, Washington D.C., Zagreb

Well, I'm an American who has only been to DC once (IAD many times), and works in central Tokyo. So, need to count up the years times 5 days a week - 20 paid leave days per year.

Other than that, here are the other capitals I been to most often -

Manila few dozen times - much of my mother's family is there
Paris a dozen or so times - love the city always do a side trip there when visiting relatives in Geneva
Rome half a dozen times - Taking mom to the Vatican
Singapore - dozens as a transit point

Other than that, there are about 40 other country capitals that I have visited 1 to 4 times.

I've been to London and Mexico City more times than Washington DC. Also I grew up in Missouri and lived there until I was 18. I'd been to many different state capitals in that time, more than I can count here, but didn't visit Jefferson City until I was 20. Does that count

Well, but Zurich isn't Switzerland's capital. And I can think of several much more beautiful places.

In 1848, the parliament decided Bern to be the "capital", as a pure compromise between the French- and German-speaking regions. Bern neither had important industries, neither was a political center, neither was a transportation hub. Today, Bern is also dwarfed by Zurich and Geneva.

I grew up in Massachusetts almost equidistant between Boston and Providence, so there may have been a point in my life where I had visited Providence more than Boston, but I think Boston has long since taken over (especially seeing as I went to school there).

I've only been to Washington, DC once. I have transited both IAD and CDG, but those aren't actually within city limits so I wouldn't count them. I have been to Rome once on my way back from Sicily, but if FCO had been within the city limits then I could technically say I've been there twice since I transited it en route to Sicily earlier.

I was wondering about that, too. A lot of dead cells in this old fart's head, so I had to look it up.

In the context the thread refers to (in U.S. terms, anyway), capital would be a city that serves as a center of government. Capitol has TWO very specific definitions: (1) a U.S. state legislature building, and (2) the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. State capitols are located in the capital cities of U.S. states, and the Capitol is located in the capital city of the U.S. If you are referring to the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. then Capitol would be spelled with a capital "C" but not a state capitol building which would be a lower case "c".

Got that? I'm not entirely sure I do either. No wonder our language is so frustrating to learn correctly. all best....jack
