Costa Concordia 5 Guilty Of Manslaughter Of 32

Sat Jul 20, 2013 10:10 am

Breaking news and a welcome ruling thus far .

Five employees of an Italian cruise company are found guilty of manslaughter after the deaths of 32 people on the Costa Concordia.

The court in Grosseto in Italy handed down the highest sentence to the crisis coordinator for the Italian cruise company Costa Cruises, Roberto Ferranini, who will serve two years and 10 months.

The ship's hotel director was sentenced to two years and six months while two bridge officers and a helmsman got sentences ranging from one year and eight months to one year and 11 months.

As the article notes, if the sentence is less than 2 years, they never see the inside of a jail. The captain could still face up to 20 years in jail but even if convicted, I doubt he will face only a few years in a jail. One has to wonder if he will consider a plea deal if that is available but with his outsized ego he probably wouldn't take it.

Apparently you can go to trial and still negotiate the sentence and that's his plan.

The French victims and their families are boycotting the trial as most of the accused won't be there because of the pleas.

Anyone know what Roberto Ferrarini and Manrico Giampedroni did/didn't do?
