2020 Olympics Host City to be Tokyo

Sat Sep 07, 2013 6:11 am

Today the IOC will announce which of Tokyo, Istanbul or Madrid will host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Any last minute guesses?

I'm thinking Tokyo myself.
Istanbul would have been a good choice but the IOC might have been hesitant a bit due to the constant possibility of regional turmoils.
Then again, Madrid did make a solid case, and while Tokyo was rumored to be favorite, could the latest news about the uncontrolled radiation leaks around Fukushima have triggered a last minute swing?

Here's an interesting BBC article:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/23973059

Announcement today @ 20:00 UTC.

My guess is Tokyo. Madrid is not in the right economical situation, and Istanbul also wants to host the final games of the European Football Championship, together with the Olympics that may be a bit much.

So a tie between Madrid and Istanbul at the first time of asking. Nothing certain yet of course, but it smells like a Tokyo win.

Edit: Oooh, Madrid eliminated, so it's between Instanbul and Tokyo now.

The safe bid it is then. A shame for Istanbul, but I'm sure Tokyo will stage some splendid games.

60 votes for Tokyo.
36 votes for Istanbul.

So a fair and clear result.

Madrid and Istanbul would have been great host cities as well, but with Tokyo, you've just got the extra security that everything will work out well.

WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! TOKYO!!!!!!!

As my long term plans keep me in Tokyo for a long time, I can't be any happier right now. This will be HUGE for Japan.

Japan is a country of transformation, and the last 20 years were devoid of any transformation. Hopefully the Olympics, coupled with Abenomics, transforms Japan into a world leader into the future.

In my opinion, people overlook Japan and count it out far too quickly.

Japan may have a "stagnant economy" and "aging population," but if there is any country that could innovate its way out of such problems, it's Japan. This is a country that went from feudal lords to industrial giant on a global scale virtually overnight, and then rebuilt itself literally from the rubble of war to become the world's second largest economy - again in essentially one generation.

Sure, Japan may be aging (along with virtually every developed and developing country), but it has wealth on a scale only a handful of other countries on earth can possibly match. It's technological capability is the envy of the world - still a global leader - and will be the key to finding ways to substitute robotics and mechanization for human capital. Japan is already moving in that direction, and will likely then be able to sell or export that technology at a profit.

What an impressive place.

I think Tokyo is a bit of an unfair choice, seeing as how the 2018 Winter Games will be in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Shouldn't the Olympic games be held in a different part of the world each games?

I've never been to Tokyo, but I've heard horror stories of how congested the infrastructure is, and I am forced to wonder if that was really a good option. Honestly, I'd like to see a place like South Africa put in a bid for a games. I don't know what the infrastructure is like there, but according to what I'm reading on Wikipedia, there's never been an Olympic games of any type on that continent.

I know that Philadelphia is considering putting in a bid for the 2022/2024 games, and even though it's my hometown, I can tell you that we don't have the infrastructure!

That's my argument for Japan. When I look at Japan, I see it as a country of transformation and adaptation. Japan adapted everything they now have and made it "Japanese." And it worked until someone somewhere during the bubble economy decided "ok, everything's fine. No more change. We're the best, no need for outsiders anymore." The economy burst, no one did anything and the dark ages of Japan followed....

Japan needs to let more immigrants in, improve the lives of women and the current young generations so they're encouraged to have kids, and in my opinion, that will help bring Japan's population and workforce back.

I'd like to see it too. Certainly we have ample facilities (Lincoln Financial Field, Citizens Bank Park, Wells Fargo Center, etc.), but I don't think there are enough hotels in the area to handle the influx of visitors. If the Philadelphia government can get its act together and boost our mass transit system, and find hotel rooms among other essentials, we would be a great city because we could host summer, or winter games (think Pocono Mountains). The only thing would be working with the professional/college teams in the area to schedule them for 2 and a half weeks on the road.

Shame. This would be Japan's 4th Olympics, and just on the back of Far-East also hosting the Winter games in 2018.

To me it would have been nice to see Turkey - a true cultural bridge between East and West as the host.
I also believe it would have sent a nice message of inclusion to the broader Near East region.

While I also personally love Madrid, in fairness, Spain has also had the opportunity to host before which as with Japan should have made Istanbul a better choice.

I would have liked to see Istanbul, but only due to the east/west thing. Plus Turkish history is fascinating and it's quite the emerging country. But Tokyo is fine, I do like their logo the best out of those. Madrid would have reminded me too much of Barcelona games. The Madrid one reminds me too much of the late 1960s NBC Peacock logo ("In Color")

Its good that Tokyo is hosting the Olympics, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. Any boost to the economy will only be temporary- the Olympics alone is not enough to revitalized an economy, and if improperly managed can make things worse.

There's the Olympic Stadium smack dab in the center of Tokyo. It'll have to be upgraded over the coming years, but it's more or less guaranteed to finished well ahead of 2020, as it'll host games when Japan is hosting the 2019 Rugby World Cup!

And IIRC all but 3 of the proposed venues are within 8 km of the Olympic Village (which I assume is centered on the Olympic Stadium).

There's a few. The Budokan will most certainly be used again.
Yoyogi National Gymnasium will also be used.
Meiji Jingu Stadium and Tokyo Dome are also guaranteed to be used as well.

Tama region will be used for cycling

This'll be really interesting in another way. Japan is in a LOT better shape than Brazil. I have a bad feeling about the Rio games in terms of crime and stuff like that. Lots of pressure may be on Japan if Brazil can't get their act together.

Well I personally think this is the perfect opportunity to completely 100% bring Japanese transportation technology and other technologies to the forefront.

Some Ideas that Tokyo needs to do before 2020:

1) 24 hr trains and subways (to be tested later this year on one line)

2) Better taxi service (lower fares, longer distances, better cars

3) Improve NRT to be able to handle more airplanes (one more runway, improved taxiways, remodel T1)

4) Improve the connections between HND and the mainland (no more late night int'l flights, faster and more modern Monorail cars, maybe extend the line northwards a bit)

5) improved safety at stations: wider platforms, platform screen/edge doors, efforts to prevent suicides, more station amenities (they already kick ass, i'm saying kick MORE ass)

6) That Hokuriku Shinkansen should be completed by 2017; maybe follow up with the proposed idea of sending the line from Omiya to Shinjuku (Underground)

7) even faster Tokaido shinkansen (use the E6 technology on Nozomi services, 300km/h, try to get to Osaka in 2 hours instead of 2.5 hours

8) revamp the freeways. If possible, make them a bit wider, and more accessible to tourists who will drive.

9) revitalize Shinjuku. More hotels, do away with the seedy bars, and open up some really good restaurants.

10) create a 'new urban development' this could be the Olympic village: Hi-rises, huge train station, observation tower, landmark, plaza, restaurants, shops, something attractive

2019 Rugby World Cup!

IMHO, that was much more significant news. I was ECSTATIC when Japan won the RWC host bid. It will be great for the game of Union. It will spread awareness of the game into new markets, which will in turn hopefully encourage a more competitive landscape other than the old 10 (6 Nations + TriNations + Argentina). Hopefully it will also substantially increase playing and spectating rates outside of those 10 markets.

Olympics though? I'm nowhere near as happy, it should have gone to Istanbul.

As much rhetoric as there was about the taxpayers funding the Arizona Diamondbacks stadium I wouldn't expect it either. However that was 15 years ago and look how many stadiums have built around Phoenix since, including for the Coyotes and Cardinals. Yes the summer heat is a killer but I'd have thought that about Atlanta too. I believe Seoul had their summer games in October. That could work in Phoenix but it would seem unlikely to fit with American culture.
Still I'm not holding my breath and would be tremendously surprised if anyone ever puts together a serious bid for Phoenix.

RE: 2020 Olympics Host City To Be Tokyo

Congrats to Tokyo... it was a no brainer, really.

Well I personally think this is the perfect opportunity to completely 100% bring Japanese transportation technology and other technologies to the forefront.

I don't think the Japanese need to convince anyone about the superiority of their transportation infrastructure or build some sort of single-purpose Potemkin Village the way Russians do in Sochi for which there will be no real use in post-olympic games days. Any investments should be made with regard to usability and usefulness in everyday use, not because of warholian 15 minutes of dubious fame during the Games... E.g. does NRT really need a new runway taking into account projected growth in the next decade or so? If not, it's not necessary... funnel people through HND and/or KIX. Most people will travel around on JR Passes anyway, I assume.
The whole concept of modern Olympics in terms of infrastructure demands by the corrupt clowns at the IOC is becoming insane.

As my long term plans keep me in Tokyo for a long time, I can't be any happier right now. This will be HUGE for Japan.

And if you are smart you will want to escape to the mountains in the summer of 2020. You think Tokyo is crazy now... just wait.

Hahaha you know what? A short 70 minute train ride on a Saturday Morning Holiday Rapid Okutama train takes me right to the very end of the Chuo-Ome line, and Okutama is one of the most beautiful areas in Japan....and it's still in Tokyo, too!

I could see that as an option, actually.

A friend who works at JR East said they've already proposed a special "olympic package" for JR East. Unlimited rides on the Greater Tokyo network and on the Shinkansen (except for the Nozomi) for a special price.

Seems like a reasonable idea. That will allow hotels in cities in a reasonable travel distance (1-2 hours) from Tokyo (Yokohama, Nagoya, perhaps even Kyoto?, Osaka?) to get their share of visitors without the need to build too much of additional hotel capacity for which there will be no demand afterwards.
I travel quite frequently to Wroclaw which is a typical example of where insanity called spending just for the World Cup, Euro (football) or Olympics leads to. They built a whole number of new, global chain hotels just for the Euro 2012 and there is simply no market for such capacity on a normal business day. From a consumer perspective it's great that one can enjoy a 5* hotel for 50 EUR even on a weekday, but how economically viable that is in mid- and long-term I am not really sure.

No matter what city won the Olympic bid, the coverage of the Olympics by NBC will suck. NBC stands for Nothing But Commercials, and in between those commercials will be NBC's self promotions for their upcoming season of lousy programming. All this will be interrupted by two minutes per hour of actual sports competition.

I always said it was "Nothing But Crap" due to their leftist leaning

But in all realities, yeah it will suck. It's just a big money grab for them.

Japan had excellent coverage last year.

Amen...I can't stand the constant flood of "touching human interest story" vignettes and showing mainly the US athletes. If the point of the Olympic games is to bring the world together NBC doesn't do a very good job of supporting that.

Good for Tokyo, should be interesting.

At the same time, it's an American channel...

Have you watched much coverage from other countries' channels?
