Just Leased A 2014 Mercedes Benz C250

Wed Sep 11, 2013 10:09 pm

I'm excited so I thought I would post.

Last night the lady and I Leased a 4 Door 2014 Mercedes C250. The black color looks pretty damn good. While it may not be the absolute best car out there, it's a great little vehicle for a secondary "beater" car that we will use to go to the gym, airport, store, etc.

Just expressing my delight for a new car. It's hard to beat the new car smell, other than maybe a new plane smell

Anyway, if anyone has any questions, please let me know. I think I'm going to the gym now just so I can take it for a little spin

Cheers,

The C250 starts at $37,000. If that's your "beater" car, WTF is your normal car?!?!??!

That's what I thought.
Anyway I enjoy Mercedes Benz a lot. My family has always had a Mercedes as one of the family cars. I even currently drive a G500. Its a one owner car (my family) and has over 126,000 miles on it. It runs great and has had very few problems and so far zero problems with the engine or transmission (knock on wood) The 5.0 liter engine on the G500 is a classic Benz engine and IMO will likely run for a few hundred thousand more miles if taken care of well.

I have driven the C250 as a loaner before. Fun little car to drive. Handles well, good acceleration too. I will say for that price range there are other cars I would put first. To get more value for the money. I feel like a loaded Passat is better than a base C-Class but you can almost never go wrong with a Benz.

Let us know how you like it.

Considering the current lease special is $4k down and $349/mo for 27 months, I'd say it makes a pretty easy beater as it's unlikely he will end up spending more than $13k during the lease.

This is precisely why I love leasing. I know they're terrible investments, however I simply view the monthly car payments as a necessary expense to have whatever "flavor of the month" it is that I want.

Congrats on the new ride! I am starting to get the bug. My lease on my 2011 Acura TL ends next year (I hate this car with a passion). Not sure what I will get but both BMW and Mercedes are contenders.

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy it.

I took my car in for service today and got a (not new, of course) C250 loaner. It's a fun little scooter.

Always a good choice. MB is second favorite car brand.

I ended up buying a Cadillac ATS 3.6L after comparing it to the 335i, S4, and C350. All were excellent cars, but the ATS IMHO drives better than all of them.

Of course, mine is being bought back by GM because of all the problems its had, but still...

Love it how you guys refer to a C class or 3 series as 'little'. Gives a wonderful perspective, as this side of the pond (and most other places) they would never be referred to in the same way. A 'little' car is something like a Polo or a Yaris, bet some of you would die if we showed you a 'mini' car like a Up! or a C1.

Mom's got a 5-door Polo. All the car you could ever ask if you have but yourself +1 to haul around. She could have bought a C class or 3 series if she wanted, but don't see the need for what she calls a large car. And there's that perspective thing again.

PS
Congrats on the car, but since it's not an AMG you just grew 20 years older

To me C-class is tiny! But my daily driver is a GMC Yukon Denali....huge. Almost 6000 pounds empty weight, 525 hp and 550 lb-ft torque with my add-on supercharger. :P

I want to look at the new CLA250, it looks really hot. If i actually get one I will wait for 4MATIC though.

Pellegrine,

I believe the only way to get 4WD in a CLA (which is based on the B-class, not the C-class so FWD) is if you get yourself into the AMG45 version.

As for your daily drive .... horses for courses is about the most positive thing I have to say

Most definitely. I think they are midsize cars and already too big for some occasions. My neighbors got a 3-series BMW the other day and asked me to trade our underground parking spaces because they have difficulties getting that thing around the corner. Some winding roads here basically call for a smaller car as well. I'd guess a modern C-class or 3-series is about as long as an S-class Mercedes was in the 70s.

And more if you are not at home next to the factory. Strange math if true that a Merc salesman better explains to me.

Which brings up the question, are our parking spaces too small, or our cars too big?   My sister drives a Mini Cooper, which is not much of a car really, and it hardly fits in her underground parking garage. Take any bigger vehicle and you would be doing precision work. The only reasonably-sized parking spots I have come across are in garages of IKEA. Perhaps they could squeeze in some more, but I guess they know their customers value the loading space, so it may be an economic decision after all.

Business as usual. Germans have always been willing to pay more for their Golden Calfes than other nations, hence automakers charge more from us.

C250 starts at around $35,000 I believe. I think they are starting to build them in Alabama as well next to the ML line.

actually the majority of US market C classes are built in East London, South Africa. I should know, my dad has a 2013 C250  .

It starts at about 36k or so. The next C class, from the 2015 model year, will be built in Alabama.

Oh yea, $35-$37k is the normal starting price for a C class type car. The prices of cars in Europe are insane if you ask me. The price you guys pay for a C Class built in your country we can get an E-Class imported. 3 series, A4, C-Class are typical level cars for the middle class, young professionals and the typical car for upper class teenagers.

I'm always shocked at the prices of cars in many countries, I guess it has something to do with taxes too.

Now thats a HUGE mistake. The Mercedes SUVs that are built in AL are very much of inferior quality to the German counterparts. Americans build the worst cars on the road, so we dont need them messing up more cars.

If the VIN starts with the letter W its built in Germany (a few exceptions). But chances are its built there.

On a separate note, the next generation VW Golf/GTI will only be built in Mexico. Again a bad choice, you can tell the quality difference between the German built VWs and the Mexican ones.

Guess I will be sticking with a BMW 3 series when the lease is up on my Acura (a car I hate with a passion)

yeah the VIN will tell you where the car is built. As far as i know, the majority of C classes are built in South Africa and shipped over here. I havent driven a Mercedes SUV, but our C class is just fine, even being built in South Africa. I dont think the US plants are of any lower standard.

If I go with a Benz or BMW I will likely do the European delivery program.. Save 7%.. If I do it will be a German built!

How you managed to get the words inexpensive and Audi S4 in the same sentence is somewhat perplexing. But I will say just one word: Golf. All the car you could ever ask for, and if you get a GTI then you have one the finest pocket rockets as well. But go for a 1.4 Bluemotion if it's just for getting groceries in.

Do leases still have mileage caps?
Leasing is an easier way to get in a new car but if it's used as a daily driver, aren't their harsh penalties if the lessor goes over a certain number of miles at the end of the lease?

Indeed there are, but some manufacturers like BMW let one buy milage. If you pre-buy, it is much cheaper than buying during one's lease.

However, if one drives a decent amount of miles a year (15K+) then it likely doesn't make sense, unless you're willing to pay up on the miles and let the manufacturer take the price hit.

Yes most leases run 10,000-15,000 a year. If you really drive more than 15k a year as stated by Braniff..then dont lease.
However, if you are over within reason (say 1000-2500 over) and you re lease a new car (same make) they will likely forgive the overage.

Leases make sense with cars with high resale value. As the primary cost in a lease is the depreciation.

Some states really penalize lessee with high property taxes (TX). Texas also charges sales tax on the full price up front. California charges sales tax monthly on the payment.

high property taxes (TX)

That has not been the case here in years. There is no tax other than annual registration fees, payable to the county, just as one pays on any vehicle. The state does charge 6.25% sales tax up front, as you mention. However, you do get the trade-in offset when you trade the vehicle in, regardless of whether the replacement is purchased or leased. I have leased my last 4 BMWs, and have never done a lease return (although that process is easy should one choose to do it). Rather, I usually trade them in. BMW Financial Services allows the dealer to purchase the car at a much lower price than the residual value on the lease, as an incentive to let the dealer "help" get you out of that car and into another BMW. They also allow you to trade them in several months prior to the lease-end date without penalty.

If I go with a Benz or BMW I will likely do the European delivery program.. Save 7%.. If I do it will be a German built!

Not sure what the Benz European delivery cost is, but the BMW Munich pickup price is about $3k less than the US price on all 3 series BMWs. I priced out a trip to get a 328D and couldn't get the travel cost to make sense.

It would be a neat experience though!

If you import it, do you order it with US specs ?

So you sell it for less than it is worth ?

As the Lessee, you don't own it, really, BMW Financial Services does. Also, the residual stated in the lease is always quite a bit more "optimistic" than reality once the 3 years of the lease has passed. BMW Financial Services will require you to pay the residual if you want the car at the lease end. What they do, is allow you to effectively "buy" for less than its stated worth (i.e., the contractual residual value) so long as you are trading it in on a new BMW as part of the same transaction. So, what ends up being the case is that you would have to pay more than the car is worth if you want to keep it, but you can "buy" it for a discount and trade it for a new car. The result is often that you have a little "equity" in the trade. Usually, this process ends up with a couple of thousand dollars benefit towards the new car, as well as the savings on the sales tax. This is all particular to BMW Financial Services leases, and may not be true of other lease financier's plans. I once leased a 2004 Range Rover though USBank (at the time, Land Rover did not have any in-house lease financing). When that lease was nearing the end, it was right as gas prices were shooting up, the GFC was looming, and large SUV's were becoming Albatrosses in the used car market (late 2007ish), the bank contacted me and offered to sell it to me for just over half of the contract residual amount (they also offered to finance that purchase for nearly no interest, which is rare for used car loans). They clearly did not want to have to deal with liquidating it themselves. I jumped on that offer and we got another 2 years of use out of it and sold it on for a little more than I paid them for it.

Well when you fly for free! Its worth it! My issue is timing the whole thing, which may be more of a challenge. I also noticed that for the most part hey wont negotiate on the EU delivery. Its pretty much the price is the price.

Last night the lady and I Leased a 4 Door 2014 Mercedes C250. The black color looks pretty damn good. While it may not be the absolute best car out there, it's a great little vehicle for a secondary "beater" car that we will use to go to the gym, airport, store, etc.

Isn't this something people normally post on Facebook to their friends?

Aren't you the one that started the thread about taking a loan from your 401k to pay off $5K of credit card debt? Maybe you need to get your priorities in order?

I saw a good quote a few months ago on a forgotten website--

Oh yea, $35-$37k is the normal starting price for a C class type car. The prices of cars in Europe are insane if you ask me

This is one of the things I dislike about living in Australia the most: the entry level price for a C200 here is about $65k.

I know, and totally appreciate, why the cost of living here is so high, but when I see figures like this it does make me really want to move abroad

Pellegrine,

I believe the only way to get 4WD in a CLA (which is based on the B-class, not the C-class so FWD) is if you get yourself into the AMG45 version.

The CLA250 4MATIC is due out in the winter of 2014. Shortly after the CLA45 AMG 4MATIC is released.

When you order a car via MB Euro Delivery you're actually purchasing the vehicle from MBUSA, and not directly from the franchised dealer. For most models you get the 7% discount but no incentive money being offered on current models. That can be a significant amount of money depending on the model.

Funny that you Americans get a discount for picking up the car in Germany; for us EU residents a factory pick-up actually costs money - to the tune of around 1000 EUR. Unless you pick-up the new Porsche 918, in which case the charge is 6,500 EUR.
