What Has Happened To A.net?

Mon Oct 07, 2013 10:21 am

No longer do I see innuendo threads, threads about OYRJA and his love of clogs, if the UK wants the Euro?

What the hell has happened?

And who are the forum mods nowadays? I demand you to identify yourselves...

And are there any other a.net originals left other than myself?

And where the hell is Matt D?????!!!!???

Bring back some fun to the forums...

Seems we don't get as much latitude as we once did.

I posted a thread last week about a Popular Science article about the female orgasm and after a while it got deleted. I'm sure it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I thought most of the people were keeping it on the scientific / innuendo side of the line. I felt the individual offensive posts should have been deleted instead of the entire thread.

The fun has all been sucked out of this place. Non-av is a semi-ghost town with nothing but the same 10 people or so arguing the same political topics. I miss, sorta, the old days. I mostly lurk when I have nothing better to do these days.

But on the upside civ-av seems to be in really good shape these days.

Yeah seriously, the perennial topics of Civ-av has been put to rest. Even people bitching about narrowbodies on TATL flights has gone down drastically in recent memory. Though we still have cheerleaders for their local airports complaining about their cities lack of service.

I feel the same. When I came to the forums about 10 years ago, it was all a bit wilder and less serious. The internet was still younger, A.net was running on the server in Johan's basement (or was it college dorm?) and we all had a hell of a lot of fun. Today, as I understand, a large company owns the site (but kind of abandoned it) and it's not the same as in the old days.

Quoting desertjets (Reply 20):

But on the upside civ-av seems to be in really good shape these days.

I agree. CivAv is full of experts (back in the day we were mostly wannabe experts and armchair CEOs), today when something happens in aviation, it's in the forum within minutes, with knowledgeable people debating about it. I'm pretty impressed by CivAv every now and then.

But hey, the good old days... Pep, The Kaz, BaylorAirBear, and of course the legendary Sean Mendis himself, those were the days.

Fly2HMO got perma-banned I think. That one poster alone added a lot of ridiculous pictures and kept the meme threads going. Miss him, too bad he didn't go out with a bang like he said he was gonna do lol. Hope he still lurks and reads this...

I think the mods have gotten better but every once and a while a good veteran poster will have a fall out or get banned. It's too bad, we lost a lot of good posters.

Quoting desertjets (Reply 20):

lol, yup

I think more interesting times breed more interesting topics which generates traffic and more posts... kinda feeds itself. Though, I thought the government shutdown would generate more discussion.

It doesn't help when somebody posts about something and the first reply is either "I think you'll find that was discussed to death in this thread in 1998....." or even worse hilarity such as this.

This is what people were discussing ten years ago. Lots of topics but many of them only had single digit replies. There are fewer topics today but more replies:

The Great Purge of '07 took all the fun away and replaced it with plenty of downtime, plenty more ads and boring forums.

I finally caved in and paid for my premium membership not long before that happened (though I seem to recall people were still getting nostalgic about the Good Old Days even before then). There were quite a few people who added value to the forum who disappeared - even if I didn't agree with them. Non-aviation might have been more argumentative, but it was certainly more lively with it. It's interesting now to see names from when I lurked this site appearing out of the woodwork...

Some things never change...

and then came Facebook.

I suppose this is a big part of it. Shame, though.

Then again, a community is what you make of it...
Have you ever felt like you could float into the sky / like the laws of physics simply don't apply?

Northwest's DC-9s are being retired... we've run out of beat-a-dead-horse subjects to fill space with.

That and I think it was officially decided that Airbus is better than Boeing.
