Cut Costs By Cutting Fat

Wed Oct 16, 2013 12:22 pm

I came across this information this morning after reading a study that demonstrates that Oreo cookies trigger the pleasure center of the brain more strongly than do drugs such as methamphetamine and coccaine. That can be found here: http://scienceblog.com/67281/study-f...s-addictive-as-drugs-in-lab-rats/. It got me thinking about the total costs of obesity vs. the "War on Drugs" which is a total sham. I came across this:

In this day and age where *certain* members of the government are banging their own drum about spending, why not cut the fat at home too...

This would require reciprocating the cost between junk food and organic, healthy based food. It really comes as a surprise to me when people wonder why Americans are so fat. Not only does our public transportation system suck, but cheeseburgers cost 99c and organic fruit and veggie plate costs $6.99.

Change those two around, require decent, reliable public transportation to most cities, and reciprocate that cost so cheeseburgers cost $6.99 and organic fruit and veggie place costs 99c and watch how quickly people lose weight.

Except nowadays kids stay home, play on their computer/video game system and never get outside. When I was a kid, dinner time meant the sun going down and my mom calling my name. But I was always outside, so much so that my dad had to come pick me up sometimes because it was too dark to walk home as a kid.

Interesting correlation you conjured up between oreos and obesity.

In my experience this used to be true but isn't anymore. At least the kids I spend time with rarely stay home and play computer/video games. They play in the car and at other times when they would not be out but give them a chance to go out and the game is put away.

It does seem kids are getting more exercise. Not a lot of porkers running around my kids school, but there were a couple of years ago in the upper grades.

You probably don't even have to do the transit. Just swap the affordability of the healthy vs. junk food and watch the pounds come off.

Here since the crisis (need for money since we can't print it) sin taxes creation is on overdrive, so much so that now they want to tax things containing aspartame instead of sugar ! There is also the nutella tax being discussed as we speak (a tax on palm oil). On the other hand people like organic food so supermarket are now making no brand organic products and offer fruit and vegetables at reasonable prices. The EU is also subsidizing organic production.

As for Oreo cookies, they launched here not too long ago, or at least you can find them when before I only got to taste them abroad, but they're not well known, I wouldn't be surprised if they were banned after this study !

Just like there are talks to ban Red Bull again (it was banned until 2008, and since authorized has met controversy with some deaths).

Well it wasn't a direct correlation. It went something like, "wow, interesting bit of information about oreos. I know I like them. And there's more stuff in there about junk food, which some kids eat way too much of and poor eating habits can cause obesity. Gee wow I see a lot of obesity every day in the hospital including a lot of kids, but adults too. Hmmm, there's an interesting row about the costs of healthcare right now. I wonder how much obesity costs us?"
