Budapest withdraws from hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics

Thu Feb 23, 2017 10:28 pm

The Hungarian capital Budapest has withdrawn it's bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics,
leaving only Los Angeles, and Paris as the 2 contenders. Previous cities to withdraw were:

Boston
Hamburg
Rome

The cost to host the Olympics has been a major concerns over the billions of dollars it will take to host the games.

In the running to host the 2022 Winter Olympics are Beijing, and Almaty.

I do not blame them, the costs are now astronomical for the games these days.. A money loser to me. I was glad when Boston pulled out. Not worth the disruption before and during the games.

When you see how the Brazilians have treated the venues so soon after the games you have to wonder if it worth it.

LA will win it as they should. They're the only city that truly has the infrastructure and capability to host it.

Pretty much all the venues already exist and the few they do have to build are all able to be reutilized afterwards. It's a slam dunk.

And Paris doesn't?

Americans aye Graham?

As far as I can see Paris isn't lacking for facilities and has one massive advantage over LA, public transport is light years better.

I can't say I blame Budapest either.

Not only are the costs of hosting the games astronomical, but I don't think anybody has ever made a good case for positive beneficial returns from it for the city or its inhabitants. Most of the infrastructure just remains unused or is destroyed afterwards, the windfall never seems to cover the massive investments, it brings no durable improvement to the local social fabric.

On the other hand, it is a nightmare for the local population as they have to essentially live inside a giant construction site for 4 years or so.

The cherry on the turdcake, of course, is how the IOC members basically milk their influence for all it's worth, by asking the competing cities to treat them like spoiled rock stars on their numerous visits, imposing ridiculous and expensive demands for the games that fewer and fewer cities can afford and - allegedly but without the shadow of a doubt for me - collecting massive amounts of bribes.

The IOC is about as respectable and trustworthy as FIFA... They're only in it to profit.

Although in London the infrastructure has been reused, the same in Sydney, I think the only facility which was demoed is the baseball diamond, its just not something Australians use.

Los Angeles has hosted before, and has found ways of making their current infrastructure work for the Olympians

LA is said to have made a profit, after Mitt Romney came in and saved them.

I don't know the LA bid so won't comment but Paris has been bidding for almost two decades and everything is pretty much built, the only thing that would be new would be the olympic village and Paris can never have too many apartments so no worries there.

It is widely believed in France that London 2012 won thanks to bribes so who knows how it will go this time.

Paris has a second huge advantage over LA - it has no possibility of Trump being in power in France.

As was I. And I hope LA does the same.

LA does have the infrastructure (though it's certainly not the only city that does). But nevertheless, I think there are better things to spend money on. Like improving some of that infrastructure. Or a million other things.

I think you're right. Another 'profitable' Olympics was Salt Lake City.
