Silverdome implosion fail

Mon Dec 04, 2017 6:47 am

A part of my childhood died inside me on Sunday morning...from laughing hysterically at this.

Now, who said the Lions had a horrible defensive lineup? :spit: :duck:

It appears that some of the wires didn't get the message to go . Guess they will have to take some precautions and go check all the wiring to try again. Wonder if it will even be safe enough to set the charges again?

Pitty, seems like a nice stadium, not everything needs to be demolished and replaced with something shiny and new.

Was witness to a much for successful stadium demolition when the Kingdome is Seattle was taken down. Was still using a 35MM film camera back then, loaded up a 36 exposure roll and just held the shutter button down. It was an amazing experience and one I'll never forget.
Wondering what will happen there - thinking it can't be safe to go back in and set up new charges, the structure must be compromised. They may have to go the old fashioned route and manually tear it down

Well Ford Field is already up and in business, making a sorely needed contribution to the stubbornly beleaguered economy of downtown Detroit. And the Lions are having a pretty good season!!

Just had to look it up to confirm....Ford Field has been open since 2002 (15 years). Hard to believe it's been that long. Also hard to believe that it took as long as it did for the Silverdome to be demolished. I guess the city of Pontiac had grand illusions that people would trot out to the suburbs to watch an event in an old, dilapidated facility that doesn't have modern amenities.

Houston is having the same problem with what to do with the Astrodome (though the Astrodome doesn't have the same location disadvantage the Silverdome had). Hardest hurdle is that the Astrodome is registered as a historical building, making demolition politically challenging. It's currently unfit for public usage as the county stopped maintaining it a couple of years ago.

For a short while, the Silverdome held the World record for largest indoor crowd when it drew over 93,000 people for Wrestlemania III.

And this is a typical Lions season - some promise and hope, only to fade away towards irrelevance at the end of the season.

They sucessfuly blew it up yesterday. They only blew up the outer and upper ring (which was the original plan) the rest will come down the old fashioned way.

It was a nice stadium in its day, but times have changed in the Detroit area. All of our stadiums are back downtown, where the should be. The Silverdome was way out in Oakland county making it a long drive from the west and southern Detroit suburbs. The place was barely used since the Lions left in 2003. The city couldn't keep the place up. When the dome collapsed it was over. The city of Pontiac tried to sell the property and thought they would get millions for it; they got far less than one million. It was way too much venue for anything but NFL crowds.

Something Las Vegas and perhaps even Los Angeles seem to be doomed to be learning in the not too distant future.

In case anyone is wondering, they did finally succeed .

Having been there recently, I understand why it was not the optimal spot for a Detroit team. It was 35 miles out from it's core audience .

While I agree that having the Raiders here in Vegas hasn't had me doing cartwheels, the financial side isn't an issue, they were not stupid enough to try and get the locals to pay for it.

Strange to read that those in the Motor City are motor challenged.

Stadium for the Patriots is 30 miles from Boston, and has been sold out since 2001, despite the somewhat challenging location.

I guess it has something to do with winning five Super Bowls since 2001, versus no playoff wins since the 1992 season?

One good reason for this is that the Raiders owner is a relatively poor man by NFL ownership standards. He had no choice but find someone to build him a stadium. Even still he's got everything he owns tied up in it. If the Raiders fail in LV, he's done, and it's not a sure thing that it will succeed.

The Detroit city center might be quite the distance, but the Silverdome is very much in the middle of the "core audience" if you survey the home zip codes of the Lions' season ticket holders. It's the same reason why the Braves ditched their 20 year old downtown ballpark this year for a stadium in the northern suburbs - to be closer to where their season ticket holders are. Pistons also chased the heart of their season ticket base 25 years ago when they moved to the Palace of Auburn Hills.
