Opinions On A New Cell Phone

Tue Jan 02, 2018 4:20 pm

I'm looking at getting a new phone, and am considering some devices and wondering about some thoughts on what I'm considering, or any other suggestions really. Looking at Android only.

I'm considering the following phones:

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+
Samsung Galaxy Note 8
Google Pixel 2XL
Essential Phone

My own personal experience with the S8 has been a complete, total disaster since the day it was released.

Well... what are you looking for out of it? What features matter to you?

I left Galaxy to go LG. Have the G6 and love it.

I use social media a lot and talk a bit/text often. Decent camera is a must as well as I like photography without wanting to invest in a stand alone camera.

Care to elaborate a bit on that? Genuinely curious..

I would love to take a leap of faith and leave the iPhone but I feel like I’m too tied up to their ecosystem at this stage. A lot of money invested in iOS apps and my photos library and digital pilot logbook are all on iOS. But I feel like there is better hardware at far less $$$ in the android world.

I'm all-in with Google basically, and I enjoy the experience. Hence why i'd like to stay.

Have had an S8 for the past few weeks, no problems so far. This is the 4th Galaxy I've had, though my last phone was a Sony Xperia, they're a nice phone as well, with a great camera.

Interestingly my experience with the S8 has been the opposite of yours. What made it such a total disaster for you?

Between the S8 & the Note 8, I suggest the Note 8 - better features & gorgeous camera (not that the S8's camera isn't gorgeous, but the Note 8 is even more gorgeous.)

I got the Google Pixel 4 months ago. Used to have Samsung Galaxy S6. I don't notice any meaningful differences, except the power cord isn't compatible with any other Android devices, the screen cracked after 3 months (I've never had a problem with screen cracking in the past), and this phone seems to have more difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi.

Overall, I do not recommend the Google Pixel 2

I have the S8 as well, and the phone has been performing beyond my expectations. And I say this as having come off the S6 Active with a gigantic battery. The only thing I'd improve is the camera - that's where the Note 8 comes in. But that's not to say the S8 can't shoot well - see my twitter account in the signature. Each picture I posted (of planes at LAX) is shot using my S8.

Hear hear! I recommend the Note 8 as well. The dual camera really helps. I'd buy one but on a student budget, it's hard to justify replacing my S8 which I only got 6 months ago.

Also, accuse me of being a Samsung fanboy but I'd recommend the Samsung options over the others because:
- Samsung Pay is awesome and really convenient. I use it wherever I can, and it saves you the trouble of pulling out your wallet. Also, it just works, anywhere that could take a credit/debit card.
- I really like having both the USB-C port and the headphone jack. No explanation needed.
- The Edge screen provides a really great shortcut for favorite contacts, apps, and screenshot/ screenwrite tools. Convenient!
- A lot of reviewers have issues with the placement of the fingerprint sensor, but I think you get used to it, especially with the case (a thin, transparent one) I have on. The case has a cutout for where the camera, fingerprint sensor, heart-rate sensor/flash are, and the cutout just automatically "guides" my finger to the fingerprint sensor without worrying about touching the camera. So, I'm not sure why all the reviewers complain about its placement. It's also muscle memory in a sense. You get used to the position quickly, I've never had an issue with accidentally touching the camera after 2 days of use.
- Samsung phones have amazing low-light photography. Think twilight, evenings, indoors etc.
- Goes without saying, but Fast Charging is FAST ... 40% to 100% charge in an hour. (I usually plug my phone in when at 40%.)
- You really see how big the screen is when watching full-screen videos. It's awesome! It's largely replaced my tablet for before bedtime Netflixing/ AmazonPriming.
Hope this helps and let us know what you end up getting! You could also wait till the end of the month when the S9 gets released, to get the newest and the best, or to get the S8 at lower prices because of the new release.

I see that a new Nokia 9 flagship is coming out in a few months.. may be worth waiting for. Anyway I’m already bored with my iPhone X which I got just a few weeks ago. Should have just bought the S8+ or Note 8 instead.

Camera eliminates the Essential Phone... though it does have some cool optional camera attachments if you are into that.

The differences you have with the other 3 boil down to pure Android vs Samsung Android and basic hardware.

Google has had a lot of issues with the Pixel 2... far more than it should of. It has fixed 95% of them with updates but just be aware.

I'd go with the Note from what you've said in other posts (though personally I went dark side... OnePlus 5 8/128)

I went with a ZTE Blade Z Max Z982 with 16MP + 2MP rear cameras with autofocus and LED flash, and an 8MP front-facing camera.

It runs on the Android Nougat 7.1.1 and has 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM, with up to 128GB of expandable memory on a microSD card.

It was $99 at Metro PCS last October.

I chose the $30/month plan.

I ended up going with the S8. I was considering getting the Note 8 but I found it too big for my liking physically, and didn't want to spend $300 to get it, where the S8 was nothing up front. Literally just got home and will play around with it a bit to get used to it. The differences I got for the $300 weren't really worth it for me, imo.

I'm a bit that way with my iPhone. My last purchase was the 7S after loosing my 6S. The 6S turned up a year later and was in original nick so out went to my grandson. I'm not looking at another iPhone for some years and, at 73, the 7S might be my last. We also drive our cars 15 or more years and the savings went to our kids educations.

With the money I save I take my better half on trips. Enough Avios on BA for a couple trips for us to Europe and the cash to enjoy them.

Basically I like the rule "if it ain't broke don't replace it".

I bought a Moto X4 Android One (check of a name huh), love the phone, wife has a Pixel2 XL, she loves it, I went a Note 4, she went from an IPhone 6s.

I will say this, we switched to project fi and got our phones through them, now the service so far has been great, the savings over Verizon has been huge, but more importantly to this thread, having the clean version of Android is such an improvement over Android with Samsung and Verizon crap loaded on it. If you can get any phone with a clean version of Android you will love it.
