Alternate History Aviation Theories

Wed Jan 31, 2018 6:42 pm

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but what do you think air service patterns would have looked like had, for example, the South won the Civil War, or England defeated America in the revolutionary war?
In the first scenario, assuming some remaining degree of tension between the North and the South, north-south air-links would be highly limited, DL would be an airline of the South, UA of the North, and CO the flag carrier of an independent TX, why not? G4 would only exist in the west, and WN would only be an intrastate airline.
If the US was still a part of England, I'd bet a hypothetical British Airways would have large operations at SAV, CHS, and BOS.

Another interesting thought experiment? What if aviation had begun in Roman times? A single Rome super-hub with "fly-by-night", "barbarian" operations on the fringe territories?

I know this may be a crazy topic idea, but I thought it would be an interesting question, assuming, however, that aviation still would take root in these alternate histories.

If the south would have won the Civil war they would have gone with the Nazis in the 1930s.

So factor that into your fantasy.

Not necessarily. Yeah, there was the whole “white race superiority” thing, but really, that’s where the similarity ends. The South (and North) would have had to get through WWI, also.

A question to ask is whether the Wright Brothers would have been the first if the United States had been fragmented. The Europeans, especially the French were close.

But really, these alternate theory exercises breakdown pretty quick. Never really a fan of them.

This is probably way of topic, belonging in Non-Aviation, but I definitely think there was philosophical similiarites between the pro slavery elemnts in America and the Nazis that came after.
Lufthansa (with a Nazi livery) would fly to Richmond from Berlin (assuming the South won the Civil War and the Nazis World War II. All assuming though, that the Wright Brothers would have still flew their plane. Individuals in true history would probably never exist in such an alternate world..

Of course, if the Civil War had been won by the South and there was never any reunification, Delta and Northwest would not have merged and DTW would be the global super-hub it was always meant to be.

Texas International would've been called Badass International because everyone knows that Texas is the most badass country in the world. ;)

Delta would be Grey Coat Air Lines if the Confederates won. AA would be Air Union. CO would be Half-Continental Airlines. PA would be Pan (North)American.

British Airways would be World Airways if their empire held. Qantas would be British Southern or British Pacific (those actually have a good ring).

AS would be Far East Transpacific Siberia Air had the US never bought Alaska. In the Soviet days it would be Alaskaflot.

If a.net had its say, Icelandair would be Fish Flight, the ME3 would be Subsidy Air, Luxury Airlines, and Grow So Quick We Eventually Collapse Under Our Own Weight Airways.

There is an alternate reality book where the South wins the Civil War and the North allies with Nazi Germany during WW2. It apparently states that the North installs a concentration camp in my hometown that is just outside of Houston (which is adjacent to IAH in real life).
You know all is right is the world when the only thing people worry about is if the president had sex with a pornstar.
