Stephen Hawking has died - 76 yrs old

Wed Mar 14, 2018 3:59 am

Very sad news. An incredible mind, incredible insights, incredible science.

https://www.theguardian.com/science/201 ... es-aged-76

I like this quote from him:

"It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love."

R.I.P Mr. Hawking.

Thank you for helping guide us on this wondrous adventure.

great quote indeed.

i like this one.

“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.”

and of course

“All the evidence seems to indicate, that the universe has not existed forever, but that it had a beginning, about 15 billion years ago. This is probably the most remarkable discovery of modern cosmology. Yet it is now taken for granted. We are not yet certain whether the universe will have an end. When I gave a lecture in Japan, I was asked not to mention the possible re-collapse of the universe, because it might affect the stock market. However, I can re-assure anyone who is nervous about their investments that it is a bit early to sell: even if the universe does come to an end, it won’t be for at least twenty billion years.”

Very saddened to see this news today.

A great man with one of the greatest minds mankind has ever produced. An amazing story of how to overcome adversity.

He was also a man with a sense of humour as witnessed by his cameo appearances in multiple episodes of Big Bang Theory.

I sure would have loved to attend one of his lectures. No mind like Hawking's these days. To defy the odds and live as long as he did...that is a miracle.

May he rest in peace.

Very clever man, and proof that you can still succeed in life, no matter the adversity.

A colleague of mine suffered the same disease and also passed away after a long battle. He also achieved great things.

RIP.

Here is what leaves me floored about the man.

He didn't consider it suffering. Stephen Hawking considered his condition to be almost a blessing as it made him turn instead to the open vistas of thought. Much of his later theoretical work was as a direct result of the mental discipline and mathematical ability he worked on relentlessly. All in his mind; not even a notepad and pencil at times.

And of course he was passionate about healthcare and the NHS.

A brilliant mind for sure. The most amazing and inspiring thing about him was that he persevered and accomplished so much while dealing with a debilitating disease. That was truly superhuman. Seems fitting that he passed away on Pi day.

Is there a good probability his ashes will be launched into orbit?

Not sure about that one as he cared a great deal about our environment and Earth's future as well. He may have preferred a terrestrial burial.

I remember him being the person I researched for a middle school project many years ago. Very fascinating to learn about how he overcame one of the worst medical ailments that has existed only to become one of the greatest minds we have ever seen on Earth and opening the door on theories regarding the universe.

RIP.

Truly phenomenal. But we can always see him...in 2009:

““I’m hoping copies of [the invitation], in one form or another, will survive for many thousands of years,” Hawking said. In which case, the party is on June 28, 2009, and the coordinates are 52° 12’ 21” N, 0° 7’ 4.7” E. If you’re a time traveler and reading this, please don’t keep Mr. Hawking waiting.”

A great loss for mankind.

A brilliant mind who fought adversity his entire adult life but never let it prevent it from achieving all he could achieve.
A great humanist, he took the time to take his gaze away from the indecipherable workings of the Universe to reach down to the rest of us to try as best as he could to share the wonders he explored with his mind.

He also had a great sense of humour, excelled in self-deprecation and remained truly humble and reserved despite his de facto stardom.

There were and are many great minds in the fields of science who are working, often selflessly, towards a better mankind through enlightenment. Hawking was one of those who forever will remind us of these mostly unsung heroes of society.

Rest in peace.

Nope, I rather look at it this way: that we were blessed with his earthly existence for 76 years was a great gain for mankind.
