2026 World Cup Host Selection

Tue Jun 12, 2018 5:10 pm

The tournament in Russia is about to begin, and we're also less than 24 hours away from finding out who will host the 2026 edition - Morocco (their 5th time bidding) or Canada, Mexico, and the United States. For a while it seemed like the combined North American bid was a lock to win it, but in recent months its become more of a toss-up, apparently somewhat due to Trump's rhetoric and anti-American sentiments. After the whole fiasco that happened 8 years ago when Russia and Qatar were awarded the 2018 and 2022 tournaments, the selection process is now different. Previously, the bids were voted on by the 24-man executive committee, but now every FIFA member nation will get a vote. Yeah, I might be a little biased, but for me the North American bid is the clear choice. The 1994 World Cup still holds the attendance record and all of the infrastructure is already in place. I do find it a little sad that Chicago and Vancouver wouldn't host any matches if the North American bid is successful.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Whoever will pay the most. With Russia and especially Qatar choosen, the FIFA was doing the corruption game in plain site. Sadly FIFA is killing football, no matter how the voting system is, that's why Sepp Blatter was re-elected by this system.

As for 2026, I am actually hoping for Marrocco.
Many happy landings, greetings from The Netherlands!

While the US/Mexico/Canada is the obvious choice, the wonderful world of politics could well come into force in which case I wouldn't be surprised if Morocco is given it.

I do have to wonder what it would take for the UK to get to host again ?

Let's be real. It's going to be North America. So many licensing agreements.

Apparently President Trump is supporting the bid. Of course he would, he would fit right in with the criminals who run FIFA, expecting some 'tribute' maybe some selectors staying at his hotels in the USA or 'campaign contributions' from corporate sponsors.

I'll always love USA 94.

Some many great games and goals.

Hagi, stoichkov, Batistuta, Romario

Don't know if it was the weather, but it just had a great feel

First big major bit of drama even before the whole thing starts.

Spain sacks the head coach after announcing he was leaving to coach Real Madrid after the WC (note that he had just signed a contract extension a couple weeks ago).

Im excited! Houston AND Denver (home town and current place of living) are both venue candidates!

And as far as the this years Cup goes, Russia (even though P-Money bought it) still makes for a better host than Qatar: more than one major city for venues for starters.

In the end, the vote wasn't even that close - 134 to 66. I fear that the expansion to 48 teams could water down the competition and I don't like the idea of 3 team groups, but it's exciting nonetheless. As of now, it's still undecided whether or not the 3 host countries will qualify automatically. It will be much easier to qualify under the expanded format, but it still probably wouldn't be a guarantee for Canada.

This is the anti-Qatar World Cup.

Sure, many are quick to boast North America may not need to invest anything in Stadia, but what about transportation? Airports in the region are dated, overcapacity, and behind those in Europe and certainly Asia. Forget inter-city fast rail infrastructure, it does not exist so everyone is forced into the airports. And then many of the cities themselves have little to no mass transit.

Even with such deficiencies they want to play games in Edmonton and Mexico City, Seattle and Miami. That makes Russia look like Belgium. The proposed distances are ridiculous.

And then that small border problem. US-Mexico border? Really? Huge problem right there. Unless it will be a personalized format where teams stay in one city.

2030 will be the 100th anniversary of the 1st World Cup in Uruguay, and since they're bidding you'd have to think they'll be favorites. Maybe England can do a combined bid with Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and maybe even Ireland?

It could be Scotland most solid chance to qualify for a WC, that's for sure.

I think I can speak for my country when, upon learning that we are to cohost the World Cup, I say,

"...cup of what?"

:duck:

One thing I could see in this United 2026 is the need for further integration between the countries due to the game, such as a tri-national visa waiver (combined ESTA, eTA and FMME) or those the aviation industry some kind of tri-national agreements.

Watch this space!

Russia has enacted a special visitor visa for WC attendees together with FIFA called Fan ID.

So something to the same effect.

Good news for the Netherlands and Italy!

Sorry, I could not resist...

Back to the topic: as much as I would have liked to see Morocco as a host, a World Cup of that scale is way too much for them - even for more developed football nations this is getting out of hand. Combined hosting will be the norm and the only way to deal with 48 teams and their fans.

Good point. Arent China, Korea, and Japan planning a joint bid for 2030?
