Holiday for Firefighters/Police Officers needed

Mon May 27, 2019 12:38 am

Right now it's Memorial Day here in the US, and it's mainly for military members who have fallen in the line of duty. As much as I respect and honor the military, I also feel that we should celebrate firefighters and police officers who serve others regularly by having a day dedicated to them. Whenever there's a disaster like 9/11 or a hurricane these first responders put so much on the line to save people.

This is the very least we can do to honor these people who serve the country at home with just as much bravery and passion as military members.

Completely agree - but it’s pretty sorry that it’s 2019 and none have been established at the federal level. We should also have holidays for inventors and researchers, as they changed the face and (literally) fabric of America. After living elsewhere abroad, there are too few public holidays in the US.

The modern way is to abolish as many public holidays as possible because they get in the way of productivity.

I actually like that idea a lot. Maybe we could lump all services together like President's Day. Or we could get rid of President's Day and do this instead. I'd be for that.

When the police actually live up to 'protect and serve' and start turning on their bad apples BIG time, I'd be all for it.

The only measure that will force that versus waiting for them to do so of their own volition - have ALL wrongful shootings judgements...payments come directly from Police Union funds - That will put a screeching halt to stupid shootings, tasering little kids, seniors and thuggery too many of them are immersed in.

Firfeighters - start that holiday yesterday.

I would add weekends, too. That way you get your slaves work 365 days a year...

Honestly, productivity mainly increases through work satisfaction. If you give people a good work environment (fair wages, fair working hours and respect for their work!) it pays off.

To the OP: What about nurses? They definitively deserve way more recognition.

However, fair working hours, etc, that could be construed as being left wing or even socialism. We cannot have that. And work on weekends should be without pay, and if the worker doesn’t agree, his/her job could be outsourced or done by foreign labour hired in at lower cost. That’s the modern world.

I broadly agree with you - satisfied workers do better. Just a shame we seem to have so many people these days for axing public holidays.

I would say nurses are the unsung heroes, there are some great ones out there.

In the UK it's got to the point where Public Holidays mean very little with most office workers and banks having a day off. For pretty much everyone else it's just another day at work (I guess a lot get some extra pay, but that's all).

Heck, I even had a hospital appointment on the last one. That would have never happened 20 years ago.

I guess neither of you have heard of National Police Week...

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Many police departments around the country hold memorial ceremonies during that week.

Oh, and maybe you missed this too:

Those are well known and celebrated locally in most jurisdictions but it’s nowhere near the level of recognition federal holidays printed on every calendar get.

Why can't Memorial Day be for both?

Absolutely true, plus the only advantage for another public holiday is that police officers get double pay on that day if they are working on that day.

Best thing, one could do to support the blue light by members of the public is just a polite thank you.
