Qantas....disgraceful

Mon Aug 06, 2001 8:15 pm

I recently expierienced my first flight on a QF flight and I can promise never again.
They say......fresh food that is both delicious and nutritious ........I say.... soogy rolls loaded with far too much butter
And the leg room is a utter disgrace my nine year old brother had trouble walkin in to the row of seats they were that close togetherand due to we were in the back row with no luggage stow available over our heads we were forced to rest our bags on the ground and put our feet all over them.

The one thing i did like about QF is the great flight attendants they were very good with my brother who is very afraid of flying after a flight in a C172rg when the engine stopped due to carby temperature problems or something like that
any way i give qantas 3 out of 10 and ill stick with the great Ansett A320 for now on

Having flew Qantas for 4 times, i found their service very good, including domestic and international service. But i agree that the B737s weren't really comfortable though. 7/10 to Qantas. Great airline.

A 747-400 legroom is always cramped. Fly the 777  Smile

But QF is very good. I took them abt 7 times and found their service excellent.

I've never found flying Qantas good, but not disgraceful either. Speaking of which I've been getting some pretty disgraceful service from Ansett of late, long delays, checkin stuff ups and poison food! You think QF 737's are nasty, I think AN's are much worse now. Which makes me sad, because Ansett used, to be a good airline.

For me:

Qantas (domestic): 4/10
Qantas (Int'l): 5/10
Ansett (domestic): 8/10 - except for Kendell operated flights to Canberra: 9.5/10 - fantastic.
Ansett (Int'l): never flown them

For comparison:

United (domestic): 5/10
United (int'l): 7/10
Air New Zealand (int'l): 8.5/10
Lauda (longhaul): 9/10
Austrian (europe): 8/10
Olympic Airways (European): 1/10

Shouldn't this be in the trip report forum? Anyways, Quantas is a great airline whose purpose is to get you to your destination safely. If you're so upset about it, why didn't you try first class?

C'mon! Ansett's 737s have plenty of legroom! I was on 737s on bothways from BNE-SYD in Easter. The seats had huge headrests and you can move it up and down (vertically)! I don't see Qantas having that in the 73s...

Anyways I havent' flown Qantas for some time now... so I can't really say that they're still as bad or are they improving... But Ansett has ALWAYS delivered top quality product to their customers consistently. They introduced many services before Qantas did such as the E-Ticket and E-Check-in.

I must say that Ansett is a much more service-conscious airline than Qantas. And you would've think that their service standards is dropping in these such difficult times, but it isn't!

Regards
Jimmy

PS I think I should try Qantas in the near future to see how they're doing... just the one way...

Dear all,

I can say in all honesty that I have never in my life had a bad experience with QANTAS, thats pretty good seeing as I have been flying with them for close to 20 years.

In an airline the size of QANTAS, there are bound to be a few problems. They try their hardest, they really do, and I know for a fact that it can be frustrating for many customer service employees at Qantas who go all out to be friendly, helpful and kind to people who have preconceived ideas of the airline and are ready to pick at any small mistake or problem.

I think Qantas is the victim of extreme hypercriticism.

When I flew on a Alaska Airlines B737-400 from Vancouver to Los Angeles, it was very peaceful and quiet and comfortable on the plane. More legroom in Economy Class! I give Alaska Airlines 87%!

When I arrived in Los Angeles Airport, I tranferred from Alaska Airlines aircraft to Qantas aircraft. We were going back to Sydney. I found that the legroom was too narrow! I felt uncomfortable and could not sleep at all. I complained to the passenger who sit in front of me that she did not put upright in the back of her seat during the whole flight. She was really very rude and ignore me!

However the inflight meal was excellent and the inflight entertainment was much better than before (Sydney to LAX). Overall I gave Qantas 60%!

Next time, I will fly Air New Zealand to LAX (Hopefully, Qantas will never never buy ANZ!)

Flyboyoz,
come on! How many times have you tried Qantas? The once?
Try flying them a few times before you give a bad opinion.

Qantas 737s are very cramped, and if you know in advance that it is a 737, then go with Ansett.
Their 737s are much better with the excellent seats.

However, I still like Qantas, and QANTASforever, thank you, you made a terrific point!

I believe Ansett reconfigured their 733 fleet some time ago and now have more seats in them than the Qantas equivalent!!

You can harldy blame the airline if the person in the seat in front of you refuses to put her seat upright. she had as much right to do so as you did. And I agree with QantasAirways that you should try Qantas again, I'm sure that you will be pleased.

What is the seating config of the QF733s?

All bar 4 AN733s are at 122 seats, with J rows at 35", all economy rows at 31", except the last two which are at 32" and the emergency exit which is at 36" (it felt more like 35"  Smile

Domestically speaking, AN and QF are reasonably comparable, in terms of product there isn't a marked difference, however catering on AN is generally better. You have a choice of meals on flights longer than 3hrs, for example, something which is unavailable on QF.

Ansett International and Qantas are miles apart, sorry, there is no contest.

Cheers,

Justin

QF
rows 1-4 buisness class 33 inch pitch
rows 5 - 24 economy with barely any pitch what so ever as far as i can say they say 30 but i reckon it was more like 15 total number of passengers per flight on a QF 734 is 136 on a full flight

If you want legendary service, try the new Kendell CRJs as well as their Saab 340 flights between SYD and CBR. You get business class catering, free alcohol including champagne, and very personalised service.

Otherwise it's Ansett

Qantas cannot compete at all on domestic flights, sorry. Not on my experience anyway (many flights a year on both airlines).

Anyone tried Qantas's B744s? Not the newest but one of the best. Any idea when Qantas will replace it's B737s? Pretty aged up already eh?

I agree, fly Qantas a few more times, Qantas will definately earn your respect.

I flew Qantas domestic (MEL-SYD) and I found that they were not as good as they are on their International routes.

But, I think many Airlines are better on the longer routes, British Airways, British Midland and United.

I personally thought that Qantas were excellent, and I would definatley fly the Kangaroo again. However, I don't think that just because you had one experience with them that was less then favourable, you should not be too critical. There will always be the odd flight that is rough around the edges. At least you gave them a try - and now you know that they are not for you. It's the luck of the draw.

The arguement 'Are Qantas better than Ansett, or are Ansett better than Qantas' will never be andswered, as neither of them are perfect.

Is it possible to like both Ansett and Qantas the same amount, do people always prefer one or the other?

You were flying unaccompanied? why didn't you ask the F/A for help with your luggage, either that or put it up a row or two yourself. Of course if you have all your carry on at your feet it's going to be squashy- That ones down to you not Qantas. I have flown on Qantas and Ansetts 737s quite a bit and realy i cant see any difference between the seat pitch, I have flown on British Midland and BA also the seat picth is similar on their short haul. As for the food, its due for a revamp.

*According to Australian Aviation a decision on the 737 replacement is due sometime this year to early next year as is a BAe 146 decision. Can someone please tell me what other airliners are in the same catagory as the 737 apart from the Airbus.

Thanx

High_flyer, how big is your 9 year old brother? Is he some kind of elephant? I been up to clean and convert the Qantas 737s (never flown on them yet  Sad ) I found the legroom was reasonably for a domestic product and I was walking in and out of the seats with ease. I've flown the Qantas International product before and the flight was brilliant, no complaint about food, no complaint about service, it was just a fantastic flight on the 743. I have also flown on Sunstate many times and still no problem with that.

As someone else pointed out, I also feel Qantas is susceptable to criticism in this forum. Over the past couple of months it has been constant Qantas criticising posts. I don't see why, they really are one of the world's leading airline.

BruneiAir, I really dont know if there is any other narrow bodies in the same class as the A320, 737 families. I think even if their was it would be really between those two anyway.

I am from HongKong and studying in Melbourne, fot this reason, i fly MEL-HKG quite often, and many of my friends(my schoolmates) as well. Actually i only fly Qantas once, it was in Janurary, the flight was the worst flight ever, the seat is small, the leg room is narrow, no PTY, the overhead monitor couldn't show a clear picture as well!!2 choice of food which both are bad, and only one choice of food which is even worse. And what make it worse was after it take off, the temperature raised very signifcantly, so i couldn't sleep for that 9 hours flight!
OK, about the service, it really depends on your what you mean of good, they are friendly, smile quite often, but in very informal way. But it's Australia!!
It 's not just my opinion, "All" my friends 's opinion are QF is BAD. well their opinion slighty different to me, they think they can have many foods in CX and AN, they like their ice-cream or something like that, some say they like CX 's PTV, some even perfer to fly SIA, a more expensive one stop flight rather then QF's cheap and non-stop flight, last week, i went to reserve my December tciket, guess what? CX is 100 AUD higher then QF, but CX is full and QF will issue student discount this week!!
