Why Don't JetBlue And Westjet Code-share?

Tue Aug 07, 2001 1:37 pm

Why don't jetBlue and Westjet codeshare on their flights? After all, they are owned and run by the same person (David Neeleman) and serve different markets.

They are not run by the same person. AFAIK, Neeleman helped out in starting up Westjet and is not involved in day-to-day operations with Westjet- you can say he's a consultant.
Also, JetBlue is strictly US and Westjet is strictly Canada. Unless JetBlue and Westjet link each other's hubs, code share won't happen.
But it's an intriguing proposition. Westjet and JetBlue share same reservation system and serve respective niche markets that may appeal to transborder pax.
But I can't see this coming into fruition anytime soon.

I can't think of any points offhand where jetBlue's and Westjet's network overlap, so it would be difficult to feed passengers to one another.

A better alternative would be to permit jetBlue to purchase Westjet or another carrier and relaunch it as jetBlue Canada. This is currently forbidden under Canadian law, which drastically limits foreign ownership of airlines. But the crusade against foreign ownership has grown stale and dated in this era of free trade agreements, and some in the ruling Liberal party are in favour of legalising foreign ownership, along the same lines of what Australia did a few years ago.

And it's an idea whose time has come, too.

It would be interesting to see WestJet and Jetblue codesharing.

WestJet and jetBlue offer different products and different pax experiences. To codeshare or integrate the two, you'd have significant expense, different fleets, and different expecatations to set for your customers.

In this day and age, jetBlue is striving to offer a consistent product, something the majors have a hard time with.

Any sort of tie-up with WestJet would be hard to do, and expensive -- and that's why jetBlue would be well-advised not to try it.

Well don't UA and SAS have very different fleets?

I was talking about fleets in a wholesale merger -- UA and SAS have a codeshare/alliance together. They have similar classes of service/etc.

WestJet and jetBlue do not.
