Qantas Link...what A Load Of...

Tue Aug 07, 2001 4:52 pm

...pants

I just took a flight with Qantas link from HTI to SYD, and its no doubt the worst flight I've ever been on...I really feared for my safety (and sanity) on the new 717, heres what happened:

- Ticket said business class, boarding card said economy...'sorry sir, there was a mistake, there is no business class' I was refused a change over to Ansett business class, and was compensated with a priority sticker on my luggage.

- Water vapour was coming from an air vent, when a passenger questioned this the steward replied...'we're not sure whats causing it, but theres no danger'

- Hissing noises from the edges of windows and emergency exits...same response from steward.

- Attendents let a man who'd been chcking back the beer into the cockpit...

- F/A and co-pilot crowded around various windows on the port side looking at the wing and shaking their heads! At which point i really thought it was all over...

Don't think I'll be flying Qantaslink again...whas everyone elses experiences with them?

I agree with the part about the business class. But water vapour is normal ( i hope, i have seen it heaps ). Can someone please tell me if QF has their FAs on the 717s or are they Impulse? Did the Impulse staff have to go through a QF FA training course ?

Thanx

Feared for your safety!?? Come on, some people panic over little things. And this can hardly be a complaint about QantasLink, but more towards AirConnex. I would hate to have people think that all QantasLink is bad, when really you are only criticising AirConnex. As for the water vapour, thats normal. I don't know what the pilot and F/A were doing looking at the wing and shaking their heads, but I would assume it is only minor, else you would have diverted if it was to be unsafe and the captain would have declared an emergency. Come on, your fearing your safety!?

As for my experiences with QantasLink - Sunstate, not a problem. Then again they have nothing to do with AirConnex (aka Impulse).

Hope you have better flight next time.

You can't blame Impulse for this, it's a Qantas product now. If Qantas can't keep their high standards at Impulse, then maybe the Qantas name shouldn't be on the airline...

I think you should bring this up to the ACCC... This is crap! I mean, "Biz on ticket, Coach on boardin pass"???? You've got to be joking! How much did you pay for the ticket? and for all the extra money you get "A PRIORITY STICKER"??? Man, Qantas is going to compensate you for this!

Why wouldn't they endorse you to Ansett??

Now that Quantas is tripping on their feet it really dissapoints me. My family has flown Qunatas every time they visit Australia and had no problems!

Every person I know that's flown by 717 has had the same experience with water vapor coming out the aircon. Not a nice touch, but no doubt it'll eventually be subject to a modification..

Air Connex is the new name for Impulse.

I think the Impulse crews were supplied by a third party, I would imagine they are the same now because of their apparent lower costs, anybody know?

My cousin is a F/A on Impulse, now Qantas Link.

They had the lowest pay for F/As in the country (well under A$20 000pa - US$10 000pa - at the start) and you're right, they were supplied by a third party. I don't remember the name exactly, but does AirCrews Control sound right???

My cousin reports that the takeover has been a little messy. He says the Impulse crews are treated as inferior when in the QF crew rooms at MEL (where he is based) and that in general, they are treated as a joke by the average Qantas worker. I might add that the pay inbalance most certainly hasn't been rectified: as if it ever will be!!!!

This is one person's opinion but wouldn't surprise me, having heard similar from other takeovers.

Another interesting aside: the Impulse crews had never had experience in distributing inflight catering before the Qantas deal. Apparently they received little or no training in this and that from day one they had to basically work it out for themselves. My cousin reports that the first few flights were a problem, especially on the short MEL-HBA leg: to get it out and picked up in such a short period. But they are now of course used to it.

Also, to quash rumours, from what I have heard the 717s are a joy to fly and have few problems.

Obviously if he had been booked business class on a QF 737 flt prior to the B717s starting this run, then he will get a refund of the fare difference!

Dont Blame QF....

Dont blame Qantas ofr your troubles BA DC 10,

This was an Impulse aircraft with Impulse inflight service.
Dont go pointing the finger at Qantas for this, obveously Inpulse has declined since the collaboration which by the way is not a merger but Impulse almost being annexed for a time by Qantas with employees contracted to Qantas.

I had always thought that the 717 was an excellent aircraft. I will have to fly it soon to be sure.

unscandelously yours,

This is in no way Qantas' fault.
Those who think so are completely wrong.
I agree that some of the things done were not suitable like the pilot coming out and shaking his head at the wing, but come on!

The stewards saying "We dont know, but its no danger" is better than some other airlines overseas and even in Australia just snapping back at the pax and saying "Its none of your business. You do your job, and we'll do ours".

I sincerely hope you get a refund for this, but dont go blaming Qantas Airways Limited for this problem in Air Connex.

To Aussie,

I'm not too sure when your cousin is in the Qantas Crew Lounge in Melbourne, as the QantasLink / Impulse FA's have a competely different crew room to Shorthaul/Longhaul FA's, and other QantasLink / Southern FA's. As yet I'm to even meet an ex Impulse FA. As for Impulse pay conditions, they have the Shorthaul/Regional FA's to thank for their recent large pay increase, as it was the Domestic FAAA and Shorthaul/Regional FA's who pressured Qantas to insist Impulse pay them more. However I don't believe they are entitled to our pay and conditions, as they didn't fight for these, as Qantas FA's have.

I have every confidence that Impulse FA's are up to the CASA standards when it comes to training, and as for the 717, it's a great aircraft to fly on.

Thanks

If you had a paper Business Class ticket, it is quite possible that you would have been able to be endorsed by Ansett, had you walked to Ansett. It is also possible that you could have ended up on a smaller Kendell CRJ, which also has no business class.

I have friends who have worked at AN departments, and there have been cases where pax get their tickets reendorsed - provided they are full fare tickets.

I liked the excuse given by a Senator. She turned up at the QF terminal with an AN ticket - excuse "turned up at wrong terminal".

I wouldn't buy the argument that it is not QF's fault, because you purchase a QF ticket, you ought to get QF service. Even if it is operated by a subcontractor, Qantas should ensure that VQ meets its standards. My main sticking point would probably be the fact that you paid for Business Class, and received Economy Class service.

What were you served? Any hot food (as these aircraft used to operate with no real catering)?

By the way, the 717s are quite new.

Cheers,

Justin

I agree, if the staff are wearing the QF uniform then they should be trained along with the rest of QF staff to uniform the standard of service every passenger recieves.

oh well, lets just all avoid going with the 717s then.

I have never been a big fan of "QantasLink" though I liked the idea of all the separate little airlines joining together under the Qantas brand.
Sometimes I regret though

Well, I have to say I wasn't criticising Qantas itself, having travelled on 5 Qantas flights over the past 3 weeks, I have to say their service is really great. It was really just that one flight from HTI - SYD which was pretty bad. There were a few tech problems, the big one I forgot to mention was that 5 or 6 baggage lockers opened during take off and landing, nothing fell out though.

I just got off a YVR-LHR flight with BA a few hours ago, couldn't sleep for anything, even in businness class! LOL!

BTW, has anyone seen the new Qantas in flight classes that they're gonna introduce on LHR-SYD, they looked very nice in the inflight magazine...PTV's in every seat.

I have seen them (the ptvs) in Australian Aviation, but haven't actually seen them. The pictures shown in Aus. Aviat. are different to pictures posted on Airliners.net

In the QF mag do they show an interior like the one below ?

Or are they more of a purple colour (these are the ones i have seen in Aus. Avi.)

If anyone wants the pics out of Aust aviai will scan them and email them to you.

well the ones I saw looked more purple in colour. I'm quite confused about what QF are doing in business class, the picture looked exactly the same, except for a different PTV controller with a phone on...are they just replacing the PTV or the whole seat. If they're replacing the seat PLEASE PUT MORE PADDING in them, its like trying to get to sleep on a concrete floor :-p

And this happened 4 TIMES!!! on 4 different flights with 2 months differance between them! what's up with planes and A/C water.. or better yet, what's up with airlines and lack of good maintanince!

The water is condensation coming off of the air conditioning vents that are located in the upper part of the fuselage. The amount depends on the temperature and also the humidity too. Many times when the plane rotates the persons in back usually flight attendants get a good bath as the water runs back. It usually will go away in flight as the humidity level will drop quite a bit if the plane is flying a long enough flight. There is not much you can do about except stuff paper towels in the areas where the water is coming from. The MD-80's and MD-90's are famous for this and I'm sure the 717(MD-95) is too.

The new PTV's to my understanding are the colour represented in the above picture. I am led to believe that the ones in Aust. Aviation are either graphic images or something that they made as an example, and not the actual product. This might have been done to make Qantas look better (because I always find their seat colours boring), otherwise the magazine may have been published or the article completed before the first aircraft was initially released.
Either way, who cares about the colour

No, them pictures are wrong. Thank God  Smile.

QANTAS are now using purple seats. My uncle just came in on a flight from ASP and got the "QF the australian way" inflight mag. Qantas has the exact same seats as in aus aviation. they look much better than the dead boring seats they have on their 747s at the moment. The new name for the Y class PTVs is Q-tv. In the pictures one of the seats have this splashscreen up.

Do you want me to scan them for you

Oh Sorry i forgot about that artile in aus aviat.

QANTAS UPGRADES IFE:
"QAntas has unveiled a $300m upgrade to the inflight enterainment systems of its fleet of 24 747-400s used on long haul international routes.

The new Rockwell Collens system which replaces the existing infastructure"...... Pretty much the smae as QF media statement (will type up 2morrow i am tired)

".....The first 747-400 entered service in early july on the Australia - UK route. The rest of the fleet will be progressivly upgraded through to late 2002......"

"Qantas has also announced a modet upgrade to the cabin interiors of its 747-400s, including new seat fabric and passenger amenities. The airline says it is looking at further upgrades including sleeper seats in business, and a premium economy cabin, both of which are being introduced by Qantas partner Britsih Airways"

Sorry about any typos or spelling errors 2 tired to check
