Smaller planes at DTW?

Lufthansa is supposed to fly an A340 into DTW according to the schedule, but I have seen a 744 a lot.

Does that mean that they are going back to the A340 at DTW?

Why? Is Lufthansa in a decline? It seems surprising since there is a large German-community there, as in Argentina? (after WW2) Do any Brazilian carriers service Germany? And I have heard that in recent years tourism in Rio is falling for reasons i'm unaware of . . .

Well, Lufthansa is not in an actual decline, but thanks to the codeshare agreements with other airlines (particularly Star Alliance members), LH will serve less and less destinations themselves and let their partners do it.

TAM brazilian airline and Varig both serve the Sao Paulo-Frankfurt flight. TAM with an A330, Varig with a 767/MD-11 (depending on the season). Up until a couple months ago Varig also flew GRU-MUC on an MD-11. Varig is part of Star-Alliance with Lufthansa.

Why worry about it? There are much better ways to fly than on LH...BA, AF to BOG or GIG for example...and nothing beats the NW DC-10 to DTW!

Rumor has it that AF is replacing the 340 with 777 on the CDG GIG route and flights are to be daily instead of the current 6 times a week...as of the winter schedule.

any thoughts on what planes they will use to ATL and DTW? what else do they have that they could fly besides 340s?

I'm surprised they are cutting the 744 from DTW... it's always full. They'll probably use the A340.

Hi Nick,
I don't think ATL would see a signifcant change
regarding a LH-type for the near future. It would
be a 340-200 rather than the usual 340-300.
Kindest regards.

Lufthansa is dumping BOG. Avianca dumped FRA. How big was that market (Colombia-Germany) anyway? Is anyone really going to notice-or care? Insights, please!

For some reason, we've been flying th B744 on the FRA-DTW-FRA a lot this summer! The only downgrade would be A343 or A342. I doubt a smaller one one be used to DTW or ATL, etc.

about the BOG thing:
planeguy, i do notice that very well and i personally think it´s a sad decision. we´ve got friends living in colombia and the last time we visited them i flew both, Lufthansa and Avianca, and now that there´s no service between the two countries...

well, although LH will start receiving the a340-600s in two years some voices suggest that LH will keep the 742s for a little while longer (>2005/06) because LH is still hiring and training flight engineers (the 742 is the only remaining three man cockpit with LH).
