777 Retirement

I understand that the retirement of the 777 fleets of the world is a long time off, but the retirement of Delta's L-1011 fleet got me thinking what it will be like when the 777's all get retired. I know that I will see this day in my lifetime.

So will UA get all the attention since they gave birth to the 777 and have the largest fleet like delta did with the L1011?

I dont have a special place for the L1011 in my heart really, but I know that many of you do for its technical capabilities. I believe that the 777 is by far one of the best Aircraft out there today and I think its retirement will spark memories and images of grandeur as the L1011 did for so many of you when it retired.

Any thoughts, comments? Hope this isnt too stupid of a subject.

The sad truth is that although United may indeed operate the largest number of 777s, she will never carry the title of flagship of their fleet as long as the 747 is around.

The 777 means the most to operators like Continental, American and Delta who seek long, thin nonstop routes from the East Coast to the Pacific Rim (Polar) and the Middle East (Atlantic). The introduction of the LR variants will allow city pairs like ATL-HKG, EWR-BKK, MIA-TPE, LAX-SIN, JFK-BOM and even LHR-PER to be served nonstop (assuming ETOPS is available).

Maybe its premature to make statements like this, but I truly believe that the LR variants of the 777 will revolutionize the route structures for those airlines, opening up markets that would otherwise not be financially feasible. Delta in particular would be finally able to make that Asian push that they tried unsuccesfully from PDX.

First, I'm happy for you that you can see into the future and know that you'll be around when the 777 is retired. Most of us take life one day at a time.

Second, the 777 fleet retirement could be 40 or more years away. Why are you worrying about that now?

Third, I wouldn't say that this posting is stupid. Just a little premature.

Considering the fact that the L-1011 is going to around, flying, in some form or another for the next 10-20 years, what makes you know that you'll even be around for that? As for the Triple 7, I'm willing to bet that you won't be around for that one. I am, of couse speaking statistically here, you may very well live into your 80s or 90s.

...unless fossil-fuel powered transportation is banned worldwide and space travel occurs within the next couple of years.  Big grin
