A combination of labor, management, and fierce competition brought down Eastern. They had labor problems in the 80's while under the reign of Frank Borman. He was going to sell System One, Eastern's reservation system to Continental, but ended up selling the whole outfit to Continental's parent company Texas Air. Under Texas Air (Frank Lorenzo), Eastern's labor problems got worse and about the entire company struck in 1989. The strike combined with competition from PEOPLExpress, Air Florida and other small companies during the early 80's, as well as a stubborn management killed the Great Silver fleet.

Is this the Frank Borman from NASA that flew on Apollo 8 to the Moon in 1968?

Yes....the same guy. Amazing huh? He was Eastern's President and CEO from the late 70's to 1986 when the carrier was sold to Texas Air.
