Can I Get Cockpit Visit On Air Canada?

Thu Aug 09, 2001 12:35 pm

Hi everyone. I am going to calgary from LAX this friday, and I am flying air canada. I have never gotten a flightdeck visit during flight or takeoff or landing or anything like that before, and I know that no US airlines allow them, so I was wondering what exactly do I do to get a cockpit visit on Air Canada if it is possible. I appreciate any quick replies please!! I am leaving friday. Please let me know what to do step by step if possible to get a cockpit visit during flight or take-off and landing would be great. Thanks all.

P.S. Would it help to mention to the FA's that I am taking flight school??

Generally the answer is yes, AC does allow cockpit visits. Usually just ask the flight attendant if it would be possible to see the cockpit, and they'll ask if it's OK with the captain. Be prepared for the possibility of being refused, as it's up to the captain, and they may be more hesitant to allow it in US airspace, but it's usually possible.

I don't think I've ever been turned down on Air Canada. But if they do say no, you have to respect that decision. It's not as easy to ride the jumpseat, but it is possible.

Just ask the FA if you could visit the flight deck after the meal has been cleaned up.

AC shouldn't be a problem. I flew with them back in the summer of 1998 on three flights: SFO-YUL, YQB-YYZ, YYZ-SFO. I got jumpseat cruise and landings on the first two flights. Unfortunately, I was only allowed to stay in the cockpit on the last flight for a few minutes because of other visitors. I still will treasure those jumpseat experiences forever! Have fun.

Hi, yes I won't be surprised if I get let down, I have tried before on Lufthansa and was refused like two or three times. Hopefully I'll have better luck this time. Do I mention anything getting on the plane? or only after meal service is done, I just ring my attendant call button? Or do I just get out of my seat and go up to an attendant and ask?? Thanks guys.

It really doesn't matter when you ask. For my SFO-YUL flight, I requested a visit as I was boarding. The flight attendant instructed me to speak with her in the middle of the flight. I gave her a puzzled look as I was unaware that AC does not fall under FAA jurisdiction. She explained the international regulations so in the middle of the flight, she invited me up.

Just very politely ask and yes definitely mention that you are taking flight school The guys and gals up there love to talk shop with someone hoping to follow the same career or have the same passion.

Take-off out of the States - don't even try. If you can snag a pilot in the gate area (sometimes they come out to get their flight plan) introduce yourself, ask if it is possible for an inflight visit and mention flight school. During boarding is not a good idea because it holds up the boarding line and the f/a at the door could possibly be impatient with you just to get people moving again (especially if the flight is running late). Once airborne ask the In-charge if you catch he/she in the aisle or ask the f/a that delivers something to you (headsets, meal etc.)
As mentioned, after you eat your meal is usually when visits take place. If, when you ask you say "if the pilots have finished eating" you'll impress the f/a with your considerateness.

Most of the drivers are really good about accepting visitors. They sometimes get tired of staring at each other and welcome a fresh face and different conversation. Often a "no or not today" response is because one of the pilots is having a check ride or non-rev (on a full flight) are riding up there and it's too crowded.

Once you are in the cockpit wait until the pilots acknowledge you before speaking. They could be talking on the radio or listening to information. As far as remaining up there for landing; this will depend on how well you comport yourself and how well you all interact. Some pilots don't mind someone there for landing and with others it's a hard fast rule not to allow it.

Good luck and enjoy your flight!

Flygirl: Thanks for your response. I'll try that. But your saying I shouldn't even try if its outta the U.S.? So I shouldn't ask at all tomorrow? Because tomorrow I am leaving from LAX to YYC. Or should I give it a try? I'm a little confused. Thanks again everyone!

I think Flygirl means at LAX don't even try to get it for takeoff, but after the flight is in progress you can ask (doesn't hurt to ask, I've been up front before on US-Canada flights, but policies may have changed since that time). Also, if you're really nice to the F/A's, and you wait towards the end of the flight (wait a little bit after the meal is served) it improves your chances at getting the jumpseat for landing. If you do get it for landing, be sure to respect the pilots by not interrupting, asking questions, or distracting them when they're busy. They're usually very happy to talk when they can, but they have a job to do.

BTW, when you're in Calgary, make sure you get a milkshake at Peter's Drive-In on 16th Ave NW  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

You should have little to no trouble getting into the flightdeck. I just flew YUL-MIA with AC and got into the cockpit when we were just flying past Jacksonville in northern Florida. It is a Canadian registered plan, therefore Canadian rules apply  Big thumbs up

The drinking age onboard is 18 too, if youre old enough for that, though. Beer and spirits should be about $5 CDN per.

Hope that helps, hehe

Yes.

I spent forty-five minutes in the cockpit on my YOW-YVR AC flight back in July.

I flew YVR-YYZ on a 744 a couple of years ago and asked if I could just go upstairs and see the J class section, to which the F/A replied sure. While I was there, the J class F/A asked if I wanted to visit the cockpit!

On any AC flight I've been on kids have made cockpit visits so you should have no problem.

Well, have a nice trip. But asking really doesn't hurt. I visited a China Southern 757 cockpit 3 days ago returning home from HaiNan Island to HKG. It was only a 1 hour flight though, and I was super super lucky and the cabin crews and officers were just super super nice!!!! I even got to stay for the night approach into Chek Lap Kok, HKG. I never thought I would sucess since I almost got kicked out the China airline cockpit a week ago during my ongoing trip. I must share with you the details in my trip report!!!!!!!Its just so special.

I think I just got very excited!
