CO 777 Diverts To CLE

Sat Aug 11, 2001 1:15 pm

The most beautiful bird I've ever seen! Came in from LGW after diverting due to weather at EWR. It was truly a site to behold. Continental's 777-200 N28013 stopped for a quick 2 hour visit at CLE. For those of you who live here, I hope you saw her. The wings lifting high into the air as it climbed... the most incredable takeoff I've ever seen (Beating the A330 and even 747). She parked at Air Services hanger for about an hour or so then taxied right past the observation deck down to 6R for takeoff flying to EWR as flight 29 Heavy. If you didn't see her, I'm getting my pics developed. Just let my know and I'll send them.

Sounds great, glad you got to see the special visitor! It seems strange though that a flight bound from Europe to EWR has to divert all the way to Cleveland to land. That's an hour flight past NYC to Cleveland, and an hour's flight back. I'm surprised they didn't land at Hartford or somewhere in Upstate NY.

I hear CLE gets some DTW and ORD jumbo diversions...have you seen any, and if so, which ones?

The whole east coast was screwed up... including Hartford so that's probably why. CLE gets KLM and NW 747s and DC10s occasionally when weather or other problems hit. We get small ORD stuff... never seen any widebodies from there. NW had a DC10 at CLE today (well, yesterday now) too.

Is there any chance this may happen again in the forseeable future, like this month? I know that we need the rain here, but I wish that some monstrous weather system would park it's butt over the whole Northeast Corridor, streching down to CVG, and then back up to ORD, that way everything has to come to PIT, CLE, and DTW, but most importantly CLE, where it would be "spotter-friendly" weather.  Big thumbs up

at IAD we got a DC-10, 738, and an extra 735. It was great to see a CO DC-10 at IAD. Normaly you only see a NW and FedEx DC-10's

a CO 777.....*yawn*..see them all the time here in EWR *yawn*

just kidding, as much as I see them, I NEVER get tired of watching them, especially the Peter Max 777. That's cool that you got to see what some of us here at EWR take for granted. I bet it was a great sight for you. However, I always thought CLE's runways were too short to accomodate anything as large as a 777. Apparantly not! I hope you post the pics here on A.net, I'd love to see them

With engines like the 777's--and its wings--, it doesn't take much concrete to lift off. I was on a full British Airways 777 (G-VIIG) several years ago from Boston to Heathrow. This was the morning departure. We used barely half the 11,000-foot runway to take off. During the flight I had the opportunity to sit up in the cockpit and talk with the flight crew about our take-off roll etc. The pilot (BA's Chief Test Pilot for the B777) told me that they didn't even use max. thrust.

As for the CLE diversion, you have to consider that it didn't need much fuel to get back to EWR...making the plane lighter still.

What ship was it? I flew CO 29 LGW-EWR on 777 #13 in May 2000. Great aircraft. Yes, CO 777's are everywhere
at Newark, but I too would be excited to see one at CLE.

N28013 so it was ship 13. Widebodies aren't uncommon at CLE. We get widebody cargo all the time. I'm sure a fully loaded A300 takes up more room than a half full 777 considering ages. UA used to fly 10-15 DC-10s, DC-8s, and 747s into CLE a day in the 70s and 80s so it's not like we haven't had our fair share of biggies. We've had a 777 before too.. United. But this was the first one I've seen up close (I saw UA on about 5 mile final in the evening) and the first I've seen takeoff. He took just over half of the 9000 foot runway to get off. I will have pics soon and I'll try to get them on airliners.net. You know how picky Johan is so, if they don't get on, I'll send them to your emails. I also have the FAA data strip for the flight. How do you post non-a.net pictures on the forum? I can put it here.
