Question About Smoking At 30,000 Feet

Mon Aug 13, 2001 12:11 am

yestersay i was on a non smoking air france flight from ATH-CDG when two people in front of me started smoking. The cabin crew smelled smoke and (after checking the lavatories) went throughout the back of the a/c asking people if they were smoking. the violators denied smoking to the flight attendants but the people around them told the f/a's which two had been smoking. finally one person admitted to smoking after her husband (who also had lit up) had blamed everything on her. the f/a told the woman that the police would meet her at CDG. a few minuutes later, the husband began smoking again and blammed it on his wife again. this time the crew told both of them to wait on the plane for the police to take them after the a/c had unloaded its passengers. they said they understood, but when we arrived in PAris, the husband left his wife on the plane and then continued on to his connecting flight.

my question is what is the "punishment" for smoking on a non smoking flight?

In the U.S. if you don't listen to the crew it is a Federal Offense, and you WILL be met by Federal Marshalls, taken off the aircraft and arrested. They would, of course, know their names, so running is no different than resisting arrest any other time. Husband would get some jail time almost for sure.

Yep Mulder and Scully would appear, flash their FBI badges, then handcuff them and take them away!
