City Bird MD-11's.

Mon Aug 13, 2001 3:42 pm

I saw one their MD-11 at YXX yesterday parked as a part of the static displays. There were a couple Boeing guys sitting underneath it giving out 757 stickers. Does anyone know the story behind this City Bird MD-11? Has it been reposesed by the leasing company(Boeing) or did City Bird still own it and simply flew it down for the airshow?

As far as I know all MD11's of Citybird are back to the owner and are stored somewhere in a desert storage. Guess the MD11 was flown from there to the airshow

I went up to one of the Boeing guys sitting under the airplane and joked by saying, "Are you guys trying to sell an airplane?". They looked at me funny and told me they were. One guy then said that since Citybird demised, they were stuck with the lease and are trying to find another owner/leasor. The plane had be at YXX since April having maintainence done on it. The plane has low cycles on it, and since the plane was there in Abbotsford, Boeing must've decided to show it and promote their company. Selling the plane must've been an alterior motive, for all three representatives were suprised when the joke backfired.

Anyways, hope this helps.

One correction:
Citybird did not demise (or not yet). The airline flew two Md11's for Sabena but Sabena discontinued the use because of financial problems. This caused problems for Citybird as well. They also got rid of a B767, their two A300freighters are probably also gone soon, so there will be a couple of B737's left.
Citybird wants to concentrate now on flying to destinations within the Mediterranean and pax only.

Not too long ago they were interested in buying two B747-400freighters.

Citybird had 3 MD11s, 2 were flown for Sabena on select routes before Sabena terminated that contract (it was a strange and costly arrangement for Sabena) and one flew long haul charters for Citybird. At one time, in 1997 I think, Citybird flew some scheduled routes out of Brussels, to EWR, LAX, OAK, MIA, MCO and MEX, these routes had MD11 service for a while, most were dropped and the 767 then flew the Florida services until those were dropped as well.

Citybird has gotten out of the long haul business and now flies of mix of 737 2nd generation and 737 new generation models on short/med haul charters. It returned the MD11s to Boeing (they were leased from McD Douglas and were white tails - 2 had GE engines and 1 had PW engines I beleive) and is also in the process of getting rid of its 767s (one is already in Ansett Australia colors and the other will go at the end of the summer schedule in October). It also had 2 A300 freighters which I just read will go to Qatar Airways.

Boeing is looking to sell or lease out these 3 MD11s and it will be interesting to see who takes them. There are just not that many airlines looking to add to their MD11 fleets (major operators like AA is already phasing them out and others like KLM are looking at replacements) so I guess we will see than converted to freighters. It was rumoured that Lufthansa was thinking about a few more MD11Fs - Boeing is likely to make a great deal on these aircraft, regardless of who takes them at the end.
