I am flying on Air France from chicago to Paris on an Airbus A340 and I am afraid to fly on that long flight. I have never been afarid to fly in the US. Any advice or any thing to ease my fears?

The minute the lift is under the wing, kiddo, it doesn't matter if you're going 30 miles or 3,000....your airplane is doing what it was built and tested to do.

Just remember it this way....your A340 is happiest up at cruise altitude.....skimming along in thin air, the engines set at what, 65 percent of the power they're capable of....the Atlantic is no match for that baby.

Think of the awesome contrails shooting out from behind you! Your on a great airplane run by a competent company. A few hours, a few winks and some AWESOME food later and you are there.

Just take it easy. It´s pretty normal to be a little nervous when you´re making your first trip abroad.

But you´ll be fine. I´ve made a few transatlantic trips and it was fine. No big difference to regional flights, really.
With the 340 you´ve got a very safe plane, indeed. And, by all accounts, a pretty comfortable one as well.  Smile

I like to take a good book with me. Listening to music or watching movies will also help for a nice trip.

Bon voyage and welcome to Europe!  Smile

Take heed of all the advice about preventing DVT. Drink plenty of water, walk around, relax and have a peaceful and safe flight.
I'll bet you'll love every minute of it and when you land in (OK, just outside!) that magnificent city, you'll wonder why you ever held those fears.

Air France service on that route if fabulous. I flew it 2 years ago on a 767. Relax, you'll LOVE it!

I am sure once you're on board, you'll enjoy every minute of it. The A340 is a rather smooth plane and you can always do what I do, sleep through your entire flight (as it will be dark most of the time anyway). Get a window seat on your way back and enjoy the beautiful views, relax and enjoy the magic of flight!

The A340 hasn't had a single crash yet over the 6 to 8 years it has been in service for while the 747 and DC-10 first experienced crashes within 5 years after it entered service. It is a very safe plane and will get you to your destination fine.

Or take UAL942 on a 777 or AA42 on a 763.

Hi !!!

Why are you afraid ??? Do you think France is a "Banana Republic" ??? AF is able to offer safety and comfort on Board their airplanes !!!

I fly with AF last year: DUS-CDG-SFO and LAX-CDG-DUS >>> all Flights were perfect. OK, my flight to DUS was cancelled, but that was not AF`s problem because the Tower was on strike !!!

Greetings from Germany

Just do what I do, watch movies, read, sleep, eat, or whatever is fun to you. I flew to Germany for a connecting flight in Europe, and both ways were on the Airbus A340-300, it was last month when I came back, and I loved it. Lufthansa is a fabulous airline, and I'm sure that Air France is great, and plays awesome movies.

Don't worry, your trip will be great! The A340 is, in my opinion, the most spacious feeling, quietest airliner in the sky. Its a lot of fun to be on. Dont worry about the flight length, you'll hardly notice the time, then you'll land! I've never flown AF, but I've heard great things about them. Hope you enjoy Europe, I love it. Enjoy your trip!

I hate to be the cranky one on this thread, but if you're afraid to take a flight, why did you buy the ticket?

Cranky? Bloody stupid, more like.
She's aged 13-15. It's a fair bet that she didn't buy the ticket. A family holiday maybe? Or an educational trip?

Oh, there's nothing to worry about. I'll even accompany you if you want-- hey, I've never been overseas!  Big thumbs up

But seriously: think of this as an special opportunity to be able to visit another country and to fly aboard a nice aircraft. I would have chosen a 747-400 though...

You will be fine on an A340... I'd be more concerned once you got off the plane. 400% increase in violent crimes in France over the last 2 years (accourding to MSNBC)

You will feel same at 777, 747, 330, and any other long flights. Although 340 is not the 'most spacious' aircraft, very pleasant one. (Look at my ID!)

Your fear is normal, I took a one and a half hour long domestic flight the other day on a Pakistan International Airlines 747-300 and felt exactly as you do, best thing is to keep your self occupied, look around, walk about talk to the crew and fellow passengers, read or get absorbed in the entertainment, if youre religious you can pray and that will greatly relieve your fears because you'll know youre in God's care, also one of the best way to deal with long haul flights is to sleep, if it dosent come naturally due to anxiety try taking a pill, I dont take sedatives but the anti-motion sickness tablets i do take (two for long hauls) have the effect of a sleeping pill so im out just after a few minutes in flight, and even if im not asleep does help me feel relaxed, its great especially if youre flying a bad aircraft or airline. Hope you have a good trip Smile
.....up there with the best!
