Orbitz News?

Tue Aug 14, 2001 7:23 am

Anyone heard any of the latest Orbitz news? I have been keeping an eye on it, but I was wondering if anyone had any other news. I think it's a great site. I use it for business all the time, and I'm getting some great fares. I'm going to London during Thanksgiving for $394. Can't wait.

Hey there traytable!! Boy, I was shocked to see an orbitz post next to your user name ! !

I gave Orbitz a shot, but the fact is united.com gives a better fare every time. Shockingly, I sought help from the almighty orbitz on a fare from LAX-FRA, and it came back with $6074 - in coach! What's up with that ?!?!

P.s. - do you know where I can get an orbitz t-shirt?  Smile

why Orbitz doesn't allow outside USA user to log in...
Internet is international... American always have super good idea, sites, new technologies but why do they always reserve it for their own country.. ..

Well I think orbitz is great but as soon as we, canadian, cannot subscribe.. I no more go to this site....

 Smile/happy/getting dizzy
as for me I check : www.cheaptickets.com, www.itn.net, www.travelocity.com, www.expedia.ca, airline web site and
when I found the best route, price, airplane choice.. I call my
travel agency.. and see how  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

sometime I get the best price over the net  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Everytime I try to book a rental car over Orbitz, it always tells me the posted rate is no longer available and quotes a $0.00 per day rate. I never have actually tried to book it since I don't want to arrive to my destination and have the rental agency screw me with a walk-up 65.00/day rate. Anyone else experience this?

Gee, I haven't done an Orbitz post in a long time. You must be yearning for one. Turns out that I've been doing some other posts that interest me as well like a third Chicago airport. As for your constant bringing up of that $6000 fare, I just found one leaving in a week for $850. I've had my friends test me as well, and I always get the best one or match the lowest with my new fave site. Oh yeah, why would I know how to get an Orbitz tee-shirt? Buy one yourself.

I would email them. I honestly don't know if you can register from outside of the US. They have hired tons of customer service reps to help out according to an article I read a few weeks back. Seems as though the site is really popular, and they really needed more people to handle demand. Anyway, I would ask them. I would be interested to see if they've gone international as well.

I haven't had much luck with Orbitz. I tend to find better deals on Travelocity. I went to London last Thanksgiving from ATL for $250, with taxes it was around $280-$290.

I have used Orbitz before and got a ticket DFW-SGF-DFW for $147 versus $435 for the EXACT same flights on AA.com. Yesterday, however, I priced a ticket from SGF to LPB, returning from EZE for $922 - a good deal. When I went to confirm the purchase, it said something like "the flights you chose are not available", but it had no problem pricing them and offering the flights to me as available flights. I ended up buying it directly from American for $1009.

Hmmph, that's interesting. I haven't had any problems with them like that. Maybe you should contact customer service or something and see what they say. Congrats on the great fares though.

My buddy sent me an article about how Orbitz got nominated for a Wired Rave Award (raveawards.com). It is the fastest growing site in history along with having the most hits in June. Pretty good for a site that was fighting hard in its beginning. Now they get some recognition from consumers and the industry.

WN was all up in arms and threatening legal action a while ago. Anyone remember why or know what happened with that?

Doug_or- to answer your question, WN knows it doesnt always have the lowest fares and doesnt want its fares compared with the majors (on Orbitz), who will often match or beat WN's fares and give you better service and a reserved seat and have you at your destination in only 2 flight segments. Hell, WN cant even get you from PBI to PDX, TPA-BOI or from RNO-JAX- any of the majors can do that easily.

"WN cant even get you from PBI to PDX, TPA-BOI or from RNO-JAX- any of the majors can do that easily. "

Therein lies the problem DeltaRNAMD80 - Orbitz showed that you could fly from PBI to PBX, TPA-BOI, or RNO-JAX, even though they don't offer that service. They didn't just do it to SWA....Delta doesn't fly from DFW-MCI (they used to), If you go to Delta's web site and try to book it, you will get a message that "no flights scheduled". But go to Orbitz and you'll find 14 flights listed. Now, should I book that flight and something happen...what do you think Delta's response is going to be?

Oh, and the big 6 have sort of shot themselves in the foot with Orbitz, since the majority of web travel is booked thru expedia and travelocity, who's bringing in $1.75 billion in revenues and they can't "hide" those cheaper airfares in Orbitz.

Finally, FWIW, I have yet to find a better airfare in Orbitz than I have on the airlines web sites (this wasn't supposed to happen). MCI-ATL showed the lowest fare on Midwest Express to be $171. I went to the MIdex eb site and booked a flight for $144. Same with Delta - Orbitz showed $151 and Delta had them for $144. So...Orbitz may be a great price to price compare, but from my experience, if you think you're getting the best airfare possible there, well, caveat emptor.

I find that WN is a pain because I can never get into the major airports. I would rather pay a little extra and get into cities as opposed to smaller airports farther away. However, I've done some comparison shopping lately, and I've found some interesting things for the WN airports. Here they are:

Southwest
BWI-Chicago Midway $182.25
BWI-Nashville (BNA) $97.50
BWI-Phoenix (PHX) $306.50
BWI-Hartford (BDL) $73.00

Orbitz
$161.00 on America West
$97.00 on Continental
$205.00 on Northwest
$91.00 on USAir

Orb seems to do ok against WN except for the limited time only fare to Hartford. Otherwise, I booked on Orbitz for my trips.

Traytable....Orbitz pricing in comparison to Southwest wasn't my point...SWA doesn't serve Atlanta, but Orbitz showed HIGHER fares than any of the other airlines websites - Midwest Express, Delta, or Vanguard. If you're touting Orbitz as the best place to find a fare, I'm saying, check again...it's not Orbitz vs SWA, it's Orbitz telling you that you'll find the lowest airfare. They can sucker you into it if you want, as for me, I save $40 per ticket by booking directly thru the airline websites.

Also, not to be picky, but how many flights between those SWA comparison cities that you used were non-stop flights? I believe in most every case, SWA offered nonstops. Now, when SWA is cheaper, but you have to stop, most folks say they'd rather pay a little more and take a nonstop. But when you cite airlines with lower fares, you are pointing out airlines that will send you thru a hub...Case in point:

BWI-MDW - AWA stops at CMH, doesn't it?
BWI-BNA - CO routes you thru either EWR or CLE...am I right?
BWI-PHX - Is Northwest routing you thru MEM, MSP, or DTW?
BWI-BDL - Whaddya know a nonstop on Metrojet. Oh wait a minute...SWA was lower on this route!

If you're gonna play that comparison game, lets keep the playing field as level as possible. If people are gonna say they're willing to pay more to take a nonstop over a 1 stop or connection, then let's give SWA the benefit of the doubt and allow them to charge that "convenience premium".

Goeingboeing, DL doesnt fly DFW-MCI, cuz they are pretty close together right? a lot of people drive. no airline flies RNO-SMF either. I am sure you could get connecting flight if you go thru a travel agent, right?

AA flies DFW-MCI, Vanguard flies DFW-MCI, and up until the early 1990's Delta flew DFW MCI. But your missing my point...Go to the Orbitz website and price a DFW-MCI routing. Then see how many they show being operated by Delta (via ATL). Go ahead and book it...then encounter a problem...who are you going to complain to? Delta? What do you say when they tell you that that's not a routing that is in their published schedule? Then Orbitz will tell you, "Heck, we're just offering you something that some travel agents might".

THAT's what SWA was complaining about with Orbitz - Orbitz was pricing routes that SWA does not schedule, although they do serve those cities.

FWIW- DFW-MCI is about 450 miles. It's far far easier to fly it, as evidenced by the 11 daily flights on AA. BTW, they usually run very full.

No airline or site ever offers the lowest fare. They can offer one of the best fares, but never the lowest because fares change by the second. I like to use the site to compare and in my findings, I find that they do a good job. I'm sure that they are getting the bugs out still so they'll have a few problems.
My search criteria is always one stop or less. I look for the lowest fares with that criteria.
