AirFrance Codeshares With Continental

Tue Aug 14, 2001 5:52 pm

Hello guys,
I was checking on AirFrance website for flights from Paris to New York as I'm planning to cross the pond again in November and I was surprised to see that AF still has a codeshare agreement with Continental for flights to Newark, in particular AF016, operated by a CO 777 and AF018 operated with a 764.
I just find it weird since the strong and well established relationship with Delta, which is the major player in the New York area for transatlantic flights. Why doesn't Air France operates flight to Newark only on its own and why Delta allows its European partner to have a codeshare agreement with its biggest rival in New York?

Ciao

Who knows? Maybe it has something to do with the rumor of a possible DL/CO merger? If I don't mind also AZ has some kind of codeshared flights with CO to Newark, and since they have dropped any agreement with Northwest due to the entrance in Sky Team, why didn't they do the same with CO?
Sorry to have posted more questions than answers  Wink/being sarcastic

Ciao DaV,
actually Alitalia dropped the agreement with CO some months ago or more and this is weird too since CO is more than a partner for NW so I don't understand why AZ left Co for NW instead of keeping both codeshares......

It must be a matter of politics!!!

Ciao

It's not so much politics as legalities. The codesharing agreement between AF and CO will not expire until sometime in 2004. I would think it's a safe bet to say it won't be renewed beyond that date.

And AF does operate one flight from EWR on a 747 - sometimes 400, sometimes (rarely) 200.

The AF/CO codeshares predate Air France's entry into SkyTeam. As Iahcsr pointed out, the agreement lasts until 2004.

The codeshare is making money for both parties... so why terminate it early?

I guees that DL isn't too happy over this, but there is not so much that they can do. I guees that AF would have to pay a lot if they want to brake the agreement.

Are they codesharing with United also? I couldn't help but notice that they have flights to Paris out of Chicago, Washington Dulles, San Fransisco, and Los Angeles, which are United hubs. Also, doesn't AF has CO codeshare flights out of Houston?

AF33/CO10 codeshare on the IAH-CDG run. This codeshare to EWR/IAH is a good thing for both airlines, even though AF is in Skyteam. CO/AF when partnered have a monopoly on the EWR/IAH-CDG market. If they didn't codeshare, they would be competing with eachother, thus lowering prices. So theoretically, it would be better for the consumer if they didn't codeshare. However, I do love getting Onepass mileage when flying transatlantic on AF.
