What Is Your Favorite Small Airport?

Thu Aug 16, 2001 2:49 am

What is your favorite less that 1 million passengers a year airport and why do you like it? Are they planning expansion at this airport and does it have a promising future? Feel free to post pictures to help describe the airport...

Here is mine.. TVC Traverse City Cherry Capital Airport in Michigan. Obviously because it is my hometown airport. It is served by Northwest, Mesaba, Express Airlines 1, Skyway, Air Wisconsin and American Eagle.Airport expansion set to begin in about a month including a new 50 Million dollar + terminal to handle aircraft up to 757 size. Terminal will be built so expansion will be easy to support growth. A main runway extension from 6500ft to over 7000-7500ft (Dont exactly know, they are keeping it hush hush, remember to non aviation people, a lengthened runway will bring 747's to Europe, and we dont want that now do we?)  Smile/happy/getting dizzy Here are some photos...

My favorite small airport is ISP (but I don't think ISP has less than 1 million pax a year) because it's my home airport, ISP is served by Southwest, Delta Express (I've heard that Delta Express will be ending service at ISP) USAirways Express, American Eagle, Continental Express, Comair, Northwest Airlink and ASA. The terminal at ISP was expanded in 1999. At ISP there is the good chance of all kinds of growth and new airlines coming to serve here  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Greetings from Pittsburgh!
I would have to say MLI. (Moline/Quad City International Airport) Its located in Moline, Illinois. My reasons are that because for one I used to live there. It also gets service with Air Wisconsin 146s, TWA DC-9/MD-80/717, Airtran DC-9, Mesaba 340/CRJ, Skyway 1900D(Yuck!). It used to get service with that stupid start-up Accessair, and American Eagle, but thats beside the point. I also love the new terminal, but I moved just before the opening. So I kept up to date on the internet. The runways are relatively new too, I think....? I think they were constructed in 1985 along with the old butt ugly terminal. I also love the new Elliot Aviation building. The ATC staff is friendly, too. I called once to take a tour of the tower, and I got a nice 25 minute visit up there, along with a visit to the TRACON. MLI is awesome!

SCN. It's small, familiar, fast with a new terminal.
It has a short runway which makes starts and landings feeling special.

Ashevile Regional airport in Asheville NC...the ground staff is very friendly. The airport is simple to get around as any airport should be...Most of the flights are operated Comair to Cincinati , US Airways to Charlotte , ASA to Atlanta , and Continental just started a new route from newark to asheville..it will remain to be scene how this route does , but my bets will be well , as Asheville is becoming a very prominent tourist destination. (oh...and on some days, I think once a week or month they even serve warm cookies and milk as you enter the airport , to thank everyone for making the airport the success it is today=)

COS (Colorado Springs, CO). Very new, clean, and manageably sized airport with a whole another terminal to expand into!

IWA - Williams Gateway (Phoenix, AZ)
This is an ex-military base which services more cargo than pax, but they just finished a passenger terminal and hope to have airlines like southwest, america west, and united express! Airport is about 20 nm south east of Sky Harbor with 3 12000 ft rwys.

ATW does look interesting.. I always see some cool stuff on http://www.fboweb.com flying in and out of there. How do you get MidEx MD80's in ATW? Thats status if you ask me, considering they only have a few and they serve the much larger markets.

BTW, inst COS well over a million pax a year?
