777s With Folding Wingtips

Thu Aug 16, 2001 11:52 am

The question isn't if they exist, but who uses them? Thanx for any input.

They don't exist so no-one uses them. They were offerred as a concept early in 777 program and have since been dropped.

Interesting, I do remember reading that they are an option in a book, but, whatever.

I thought they were still optional, but just no one has ordered the folding wing version yet. Well, seeing as having the wings folded would give it the same wingspan as the DC-10 and allow it to fit into DC-10 parking spaces, it seemed like a very good idea at the time! But as far as I know it's still an option if anyone wants it, though I may be wrong.

Who was going to buy them? The Navy? Oh I can really see the Navy launching a 777 off the U.S.S. Nimitz!

Of course Navy will buy them... The only problem is fixing the elevators on the carriers, so they can take 777's down in the belly for parking...

Hehe, I have heard about this option as well.
I actually thought they were using it for airline service but I have not seen and 777 in wing fold form before..

Any idea what the weight penalties would be? All the extra 'stuff' to enable the wings to fold would have some kind of effect on performance, wouldn't it?

From reading '21st Century Jet' by Karl Sabbagh - a must for anyone even remotely interested in the 777 - I think it was American Airlines who requested the folding wing tips, so that their 777s would fit into current DC-10 and 767 gates.

After spending millions designing the modifications (there was to be a slight weight/range penalty) Boeing were understandably a little upset when American didn't sign up to be a launch customer for the 777 such as BA/UA/CX etc.

They were then even more upset when they finally opted to go for the 777, but without folding wingtips.

I'm sure that the designs are still active and you could ask for them on your shiny new 777 if you wanted - but who could use them?

Call me dumb, butI thought they were on all 777s. But the pilots didn't use them for whatever reason.

This option was introduced on the 777, however the mechanism added a lot of weight to the a/c, so airlines didn't want them. I saw a show on discovery wings about aircraft, and they mentioned this. I have made a post on this subject a while back... I don't know if its still around, you might get more information if you find it. It was on Airliners.net.

It was only an option in the early stages of 777 development, Boeing dropped the idea after the scheme received a very cool response from airlines.

They are definitely an option (they were designed, so whats the point in dropping them if they are designed)
but no-one has opted for them

They might have been designed, but I'm pretty sure there is no provision for the equipment, or the necessary structural strengthing and electrical and hydraulic controls in the affected areas. Also, is/was there an area in the flightdeck allocated to control the system?

Only the prototype 777 "Working Together" was ever fitted with a folding wingtip, and only on one wing. This was a proof of concept demo.

As Aer Lingus stated, they are still an available option.

So how does AA deal with the wingspan then?
