America West's Franke To Resign?

Thu Aug 16, 2001 12:25 pm

The following statement made by America West CEO Bill Franke seems to suggest he may be on his way out of the company, which could create a beginning for the airline. What do you think?

Dear America West Employees:

At the meeting of the America West Board of Directors scheduled for August 22, 2001, I intend to recommend that, consistent with the company’s management succession plan, Doug Parker be elected chief executive officer of America West Holdings Corporation and America West Airlines.

In a business as dynamic as an airline there is arguably never that moment of perfect calm suitable for transitioning management. The fact is, however, that Doug has for more than two years been intimately involved in the key decisions at America West. He's ready for the additional responsibility, is entitled to the opportunity and is up to its challenges. Doug is bright and articulate and relates well with our employees. His success in leading the turnaround of our airline's operations is particularly noteworthy.

I am convinced he will provide the energy and commitment necessary for the long-term success of America West.

Sincerely,

Bill

This may be what HP needs for a big impact turnaround.

Franke announced his intention to quit in favor of Parker back in early May.

I heard a report on the radio this morning that Bill Franke could resign today rather than the end of 2002.

It's official. Doug Parker will take over as President and CEO of America West replacing Bill Franke. The question remains whether Franke will remain as Chairman. The official announcement will be made within the hour. Big grin Big grin

Franke will leave America West entirely on September 1st, as Doug Parker takes over completely.

This is a good day for America West... I feel that September 1st should be America West's Independence Day!

Congratulations to us all working here at HP, our futures now look a little brighter!

Could Mr. Franke's decision to leave one year earlier than previously announced be a case of the rat abandoning the ship it senses to be sinking?

We are not really sinking, we have one of the highest load factors in the industry, our performance is improving every month, our pax are coming back, we have little debt and a good amount of cash on hand, there are several other carriers worse off then HP is.

AWA22- you are so right HP has no debt and a huge cash reserve this helps America West through this economic down turn. HP is way better off than most carriers at this point. With Doug Parker in command hopefully he can focus on the employees and in turn they will propel America West to the top.

I think America West's future would even be brighter if they replaced those ageing 737's with more of those bitchin Airbus's with the wide seats. Even better, add more first class seats and take out some rows to put some more pitch into coach.

I may be commuting several times a week from PHX/PDX soon, and my only real option is Alaska because their coach is more comfortable (plus I get priority seating), and upgrading into first class is typically pretty easy. I'd like to fly America West, it's got even more conveniant flight times, but I just don't want to be packed in a sardine can...

One of the highest load factors in the industry. Minimal debt. Labor costs among the lowest in the industry. Losing lots of $$$. All true of America West. Sounds like an airline in trouble to me. Could Bill Franke be on to something he isn't telling us?
